Kyle was standing beside a mailbox, arms crossed and head lowered.
It was close to eight. The sky had lost its brightness, and the full moon flickered in and out from behind drifting clouds.
He wore a hood that covered his head, but no mask for now. He was only waiting. But yes, what he was about to do would require him to hide his face as well.
He had just finished his run and intended to test his powers. Before that, though, he needed to et soone.
[Host, an arrangent has been made.]
The system suddenly notified him.
[The host can now live stream using the system feature.]
Kyle humd in surprise. ’Where are the caras?’
[Do not worry, host. Your viewers will receive the best possible angles during the stream. You can also view their comnts and the challenges they provide.]
’Challenges?’
[Indeed, host. Your viewers can assign quests, which will reward you with System Points.]
That sounded interesting. But still, "What exactly is the benefit of SP apart from leveling up?"
[The host will unlock additional features where SP can be used. These features will beco available upon leveling up.]
[To level up, the host requires 1000 SP.]
[Soul Points: 1361]
Kyle humd in acknowledgnt. Interesting.
He currently had around thirteen hundred SP, thanks to the ghoul he hunted back then. He could easily level up now, but he preferred to push his mortal limits first and strengthen his affinity a bit more before advancing.
Yes, the new system feature would definitely help him, but considering how much he had progressed in just a week, he knew it would not take more than a month to reach his current ceiling.
So, better to wait and then enjoy the reward.
Not long after, a black car approached him.
Kyle slowly lifted his head. The vehicle looked sleek and expensive. The serpent emblem rising from the front of the bonnet made it clear it was worth millions.
He could not help but remark, "You’re loaded, aren’t you?"
Veronica shook her head with a smile. "This is just a necessity. I need to maintain a reputation as the Commander, you know."
She closed the door and walked toward him. "How are your injuries? And what happened that you slept for two days?"
Kyle rubbed the back of his head. "Going through a lifeti of changes in just a few days... it’s natural to feel a bit lethargic. Sorry for worrying you."
Veronica faltered. She had co prepared to scold him, rehearsing her words the entire ride, only to stumble the mont she saw that sheepish smile.
Groaning, she muttered, "At least leave a ssage the next ti you decide to go into hibernation."
Kyle grinned. "So? Why did you want to see so urgently?" When he had asked her earlier where he could use Genesis without being targeted by the PSC, she had told him to wait for her.
Veronica stayed silent. She walked back to the car and pulled out a small bag from the backseat.
"Here." She handed it to him. "There are small devices inside. They work like EMPs for caras and Genesis sensors. They create a temporary field that gives you a window to go all out. But don’t rely on them too much. Keep your eyes and ears open."
She continued, "And don’t use them near any hotspot. The surveillance departnt will imdiately dispatch troops to investigate. I’ve already sent you a list of places that are least monitored."
Kyle nodded, peeking into the bag. Several large capsules were packed neatly inside.
"You ca prepared this ti, huh?" he said with a smile.
Veronica huffed. "I knew you wouldn’t listen and stay at ho. I’ve been thinking about giving these to you for a while now."
Kyle sighed before looking up. "I have... caused you a lot of trouble, haven’t I?"
She had erased footage of him wandering around and causing havoc. She had been risking her position, even her freedom, for him. And now, she had taken the ti to bring him these high-tech tools, just so he could train safely.
Veronica shrugged. "You can pay back by treating to dinner."
Kyle perked up. "Yeah, sure. What do you prefer? Western, traditional or sothing else? I know so of the best places in town."
Veronica shook her head. "Honestly, I’m tired of fancy food. I’d rather have handmade noodles than so exquisite blanshehdyer."
Kyle chuckled. "That’s not even a dish."
Veronica grumbled, "With the kind of ridiculous nas they give to their dishes, I wouldn’t be surprised if sothing like that actually exists."
Kyle found this side of the Commander oddly endearing. It was clear she had no love for the pretentious food served in high-end places.
Humming, he said, "Then I’ll cook for you. How about tomorrow? I don’t have classes, so you can co over."
Veronica shook her head. "Your place has been under strict surveillance since this morning. It’s too risky." Then, a little hesitantly, she added, "How about you co over to my place...?"
Kyle blinked in surprise. "Are you sure? I don’t mind, but... don’t you live with your family?"
Veronica gave a faint smile. "No, I live alone."
Kyle realized he had made a mistake bringing up her family. That smile did not match the emotion in her eyes.
Instead of pressing further or offering hollow sympathy, he said lightly, "Then I’ll beco the second occupant, temporarily, at your place tomorrow. I’ll co around eleven with all the ingredients. Send your address, and be ready for so ss and noise. Not in the wrong sense though..." He chuckled, realizing how that sounded.
Veronica giggled, shaking her head. "Alright then, see you tomorrow. I’ll be waiting."
She stepped forward and raised her hand out of habit.
Kyle sighed. "That’s not exactly how two friends act, is it?" He moved closer and gave her a light hug. "There. Have a safe trip back ho, okay?"
"Mm..." Veronica responded softly.
As soon as they parted, she hurried back to the car, not wanting him to see her face.
Kyle waved at her as she drove away.
Then, he slung the bag over his shoulder and left the place.
Let’s see how much he has improved.
