Seemingly in search of sothing.

Upon seeing this scene, Fang Cheng couldn’t help but shudder and imdiately jumped down from the tree.

It was not wise to linger here.

Having just felt the power of modern weaponry at close range, even Jiang Chen with his abnormal defensive capabilities had died a bitter death.

He was certainly not as tough as Jiang Chen, at least not yet capable of crushing helicopters with his hands or withstanding missile strikes with his body.

Since the situation had stabilized and no longer affected the hospital ward where his mother was staying,

it was best to hurry back to Old Factory Street to avoid exposing his whereabouts.

Fang Cheng looked down at his torn and tattered hoodie and sweatpants.

He then took out a new set of casual clothes from his shoulder bag and quickly changed into them.

Fortunately, he had bought several sets of clothes and pants to change into that night.

Today, before the operation, he had the foresight to imitate the spies in movies who change their clothes to eliminate all evidence of a cri after completing their assassination missions.

Thus, his shoulder bag always contained a spare set of clothes.

Otherwise, wearing these tattered clothes to hail a cab would probably get him reported as a madman - far too conspicuous.

A few minutes later.

Fang Cheng was dressed in new, business-like attire, had taken off the fierce mask, and put on a pair of gold-rimd glasses.

He had completely changed his appearance and now looked like a poor office worker who had worked late into the night.

Listening to the faint sound of helicopter rotors, Fang Cheng quickly scanned the area with the "Scavenger’s Eye" to thoroughly check the scene.

Then, inhaling deeply, his expression beca calm and composed as he walked towards the dimly lit city nightscape in the distance.

...

"What? A man wearing a white mask?"

Outside the Rehabilitation Center building, a tall, middle-aged man in a black suit exclaid in surprise.

His eyes were deeply furrowed into a frown, fixating on the white-haired man and the burly man with a shield.

His gaze was sharp like a tangible arrow, causing both of them to feel a chill down their spines.

Especially looking at the scouting helicopters constantly flying overhead, they felt inexplicably baffled.

"Xu Fei, Chen Lei, describe again in detail your encounter with that man."

Xu Fei was the real na of the white-haired man.

And the middle-aged man speaking was the Senior Investigator from the Special Search Team headquarters, known as "Bear Man," Gao Jin.

Seeing Chief Gao take such an interest in another officer’s identity, Xu Fei felt a flicker of recognition and after a mont’s consideration, said:

"That’s how it was, Chief Gao. At that ti, Chen Lei and I were teaming up to fight the Ghoul leader, but we were no match and quickly fell into a disadvantage."

"The Ghoul leader’s Bone Spur was both offensive and defensive, too sharp, and Chen Lei’s thigh was accidentally pierced. I wanted to save him but it was too late."

"Fortunately, that officer suddenly appeared behind us, blocking the imminent Bone Spur attack and saving Chen Lei..."

"Uh... exactly, exactly, what Xiao Fei said is correct."

Feeling his collar tugged gently from behind, Chen Lei, who shared many years of understanding, imdiately grasped what was happening and quickly chid in with his agreent.

"He took the initiative to help you?"

Chief Gao’s eyebrows were still tightly knitted as he stroked his chin, musing, "That’s strange..."

His tone filled with doubt and surprise, seemingly very interested in this unidentified person.

Moreover, despite repeated questioning, it seed as if he had labeled the other party as a criminal with ill intent.

Chen Lei, who was rather straightforward, couldn’t help but express his doubts:

"Chief Gao, what’s so strange about that? We’re all colleagues in the Special Search Team. Isn’t it natural to help each other and solve problems?"

Chief Gao gave him a sharp look and replied:

"Who told you he’s one of us? He’s an important person on the Special Search Team’s danger list, a murderer known by the codena ’White Owl’."

"Ah?!"

His words struck like a thunderbolt, exploding suddenly beside their ears.

Chen Lei’s face was a picture of astonishnt, his mouth gaping, unable to close it for a mont.

Xu Fei, who had already sensed where the problem lay, still showed an astonished expression.

Seeing the shock on their faces, Chief Gao huffed coldly and then explained:

"A few days ago, a similar Ghoul murder case occurred in Jiangbei, where a mysterious man wearing a white mask was seen at the scene by many witnesses."

"It’s impossible, that officer couldn’t possibly be a murderer..."

Chen Lei was stunned for a mont, then shook his head like a rattle-drum, utterly unwilling to believe it.

Xu swallowed hard and cautiously raised an objection:

"If he were a monster, why would he help us exterminate other Ghouls?"

Chief Gao’s eyes flashed as he reproachfully said:

"As a mission specialist, don’t you know that Ghouls can rapidly increase their strength and accelerate their evolution by devouring their kind?"

This statent completely silenced Xu Fei.

Chief Gao continued:

"Whether he is a Ghoul or not is not our main concern. The real issue lies with the mask he wears on his face."

Hearing this, Xu Fei and Chen Lei looked at Chief Gao with a trace of hope.

"That mask is no ordinary mask."

Chief Gao’s gaze was stern as he took a deep breath and looked around at the military soldiers and the circling helicopters.

He then explained in a gravely serious tone:

"As you know, the Special Search Team’s archives contain many precious records inherited from the ancient royal families, among which is an account of an ancient artifact that resembles the white mask."

"It is said that such masks can be traced back to the tis of Primitive Tribes thousands of years ago, originally used by shamans during sacrificial rites to kill by slitting throats, to prevent blood from splattering on their faces."
