"Ah Cheng, are you alone?"
On the phone, Ma Donghe’s voice was very low, like a young girl intentionally speaking in a high-pitched voice.
"No one here, don’t you know I’m a single dog?"
Fang Cheng picked up the remote and turned off the TV, then shifted to a more comfortable lounging position and answered casually.
"No."
Ma Donghe quickly corrected himself and then asked softly, "I an, have you noticed any strange people or things around you recently?"
Seeing him act like he was communicating with an underground organization, Fang Cheng found it a bit speechless but still answered truthfully:
"These days, I’ve either been lounging at ho or visiting relatives. I did go out with my family for a couple of days to have fun, but I haven’t noticed anything unusual."
After saying this, he directly asked:
"Why are you calling in the middle of the night when you should be sleeping, is there sothing urgent?"
On the other end, Ma Donghe audibly sighed with relief, his voice tinged with a bit of gratitude:
"Ah Cheng, it’s good you’re okay. Mainly, there are so issues on my end."
Then he got straight to the point and explained the reason.
Ever since he was kidnapped during an arms deal and later rescued by Fang Cheng from a garbage disposal plant, Ma Donghe had been keeping a low profile at ho.
He’s been cautious, constantly worried that the so-called Noah Organization or Red Tiger Gang would co looking for trouble again.
During the New Year period, things were uneventful, and ti seed peaceful.
But starting from yesterday, Ma Donghe unexpectedly noticed a few suspicious-looking strangers in the village.
So even loitered around the Ma Mansion gate, with shifty eyes, clearly not good people.
It was obvious that these people were targeting Ma Donghe.
Upon hearing this, Fang Cheng furrowed his brows slightly and asked:
"Do you have a plan? Do you need to step in and help settle this?"
His tone naturally carried a hint of murderous intent.
"I think, for now, I shouldn’t need to trouble you to get involved."
Ma Donghe chuckled bitterly at this and then explained a bit more:
"Those people are just wandering around the village without taking any action. They’re probably apprehensive about you and want to find out where you are first.
"So, for the ti being, we should minimize our contact, in case they see through our relationship."
After explaining the reason for his late-night call, he paused a bit, then continued in a slightly helpless tone:
"Besides, my old man already has plans, intending to send to this year’s Special Search Team’s New Year interview."
"Special Search Team?"
Fang Cheng was taken aback upon hearing this.
"Yeah, it’s the sa Special Search Team that showed up at the Red Tiger Gang’s port warehouse last ti."
Worried that Fang Cheng didn’t understand, Ma Donghe elaborated:
"They are an official law enforcent agency, with forces spread throughout the country, full of experts and skilled individuals. They’re like the emperor’s secret police from ancient tis, with the power to act first and report later, even the big family clans are wary of them..."
There was no need for Ma Donghe to introduce them, as Fang Cheng was already quite familiar with the infamous violent force from hearing about it from Ma Jianguo, Lin Chuqiao, and the Smiling Demon.
The so-called "Special Search Team," officially nad the "Special Affairs Investigation Team," is a special organization under the National Security Departnt.
Their main responsibility is to handle supernatural events and various non-human creatures, power user criminals that ordinary police teams can’t manage, implenting corresponding precautionary asures and arrest or elimination actions.
Because of the highly special nature of their tasks, they can call upon local governnt departnts to assist their operations, while also needing to maintain confidentiality from the public, thus they have an imnse amount of authority.
In so respects, they’re indeed like ancient secret police, or even more powerful than historical oversight organizations.
After all, every mber of the organization possesses extraordinary skills, beyond human limits, poised to combat monsters and power users, maintain social order, and balance the influence of big family clans as a national strength.
Fang Cheng was surprised not because of the reputation of the Special Search Team but because of Ma Jianguo’s choice.
Unexpectedly, the old man was once righteous, criticizing the Special Search Team with official backing as unorthodox scoundrels.
Now, out of concern for his son’s safety, he succumbed to authority and plans to send his son to take the governnt exam.
"Sigh, if it wasn’t for the old man’s sake, I wouldn’t want to be a watchdog either."
Ma Donghe self-mocked with a sigh, then said:
"But if I manage to pass the interview and get myself officially endorsed, even if I walked right up to those bastards, they wouldn’t dare lay a finger on ."
"Then, not only can I get out of my current predicant, but I can also use the resources of the Special Search Team to investigate Noah Organization and Red Tiger Gang, making them pay for what they’ve done."
Ma Donghe declared with conviction, though from his tone, there wasn’t much joy or expectation, rather a bit of distress.
To be honest, he had been just a street-savvy guy loafing about the underworld, free-spirited by nature.
Suddenly being called upon to beco an official, bound by various rules and regulations, and dutifully performing tasks on the street, felt a bit out of character.
Picturing Ma Donghe awkwardly dressed in a uniform, Fang Cheng’s lips couldn’t help but curl upward, teasing:
"What should I do then, if you beco a soldier and I’m a crook, loyalty and duty both are at odds?"
"Damn, if I ever co across you during a mission, I’d run faster than anyone!"
At Fang Cheng’s words, Ma Donghe’s purposely hushed voice unexpectedly rose a few pitches, instantly eager to clarify:
