Steve
The nightmare hit at 3:47 AM.
Not dream. Connection. The severed bridge between my mind and the Mind Flayer's consciousness reactivating like phantom limb suddenly regaining sensation.
I saw through its perception. Rats in Hawkins sewers—hundreds of them, eyes glowing wrong, moving in coordinated patterns impossible for rodents. Gathering. rging. Building.
"HELLO AGAIN, TRAVELER."
The voice made my silver scars burn. Seven months dormant, suddenly alive with dinsional energy.
"YOU CLOSED MY GATE. SEVERED MY CONNECTION. IMPRISONED BEYOND THE VEIL. BUT BARRIERS GROW THIN. YOUR HUMAN ALLIES DRILL DOORWAYS. AND I REMBER YOU."
I jerked awake, gasping. Chrissy stirred beside .
"Vision?" she asked groggily.
"Worse. Connection." My hands shook. "The Mind Flayer's back. Not fully, but reaching through. Using rats as hosts."
"Like it used Will?"
"Smaller scale. Building biomass, creating physical form from possessed animals." I grabbed my phone, checked the Backpack's reading—102%, charging faster near dinsional weak points. "It's preparing for the Russians' gate opening. Two-pronged assault."
Chrissy
Steve's corruption scars glowed faint silver in the darkness. Not spreading, just active. Responding to the Mind Flayer's renewed presence.
"Can it possess you again?" I asked, fear tight in my throat.
"No. The connection's different now. One-way observation, not control. It knows I'm here, but can't claim ." He touched his chest where the scars were thickest. "But it's watching. Learning. Planning."
"What does it want?"
"Revenge. Access. To finish what it started with Will." Steve stood, began dressing. "And it knows I'm the one who stopped it. This isn't random dinsional invasion anymore. It's personal."
The Walkman sat on my nightstand, loaded with our song. Protection against visions, against dinsional interference. But would music stop the Mind Flayer if it ca for us directly?
Hopper
The call ca at 4 AM. Dispatch reporting bizarre animal behavior—rats swarming, aggressive, moving in packs.
"How many rats?" I asked, already reaching for my uniform.
"All of them, Chief. Every rat in Hawkins, heading toward Brimborn Steel Works."
I called Steve imdiately. Kid answered on first ring, like he'd been expecting it.
"Rat possession," he said before I could speak. "Mind Flayer's building physical form using small hosts. Check the steel works—that's where they're gathering."
"How do you know—"
"Because I felt it wake up three hours ago. Our connection reactivated." His voice held exhaustion I recognized from last year. "It's back, Hopper. Not at full strength, but building toward it."
"Jesus Christ. We just finished dealing with the Russians."
"Two threats. Simultaneous. Russians opening gate, Mind Flayer preparing to co through." He was already in tactical mode. "Don't approach the steel works alone. Those rats are possessed and coordinated. Bring flathrowers."
Joyce
Bob sat at our kitchen table, monitoring his equipnt. The SuperComm network he'd built for last year was still active, expanded with new sensors.
"Dinsional readings spiking at Brimborn Steel Works," he reported. "Also at the mall, near that Russian operation Steve's been tracking."
"Two locations?"
"Two threats. Steve thinks they're connected—Russians building gate machine, sothing else preparing to co through when they activate it."
Will appeared in the doorway, face pale. "I feel it. Not in my head like before, but... present. The Mind Flayer's close again."
I pulled him into a hug. "You're safe. Steve's treatnts freed you. It can't possess you anymore."
"But it wants to. I can feel it looking for hosts. People it can use." His voice trembled. "It's angry. Specifically at Steve. For stopping it."
"Then we protect Steve. All of us. Together."
Steve
Dawn broke over Hawkins with wrong feeling in the air. Dinsional pressure building, reality stretching thin around two epicenters.
The mall, where Russians drilled toward the Upside Down.
The steel works, where the Mind Flayer built its army.
My Portal-Marking Chalk glowed toward both locations, pulsing in rhythm with my silver scars.
"TWO INVASIONS," the Mind Flayer whispered through our connection. "YOUR ALLIES KNOW ONLY ONE. WHEN THEY FOCUS ON THE MACHINE, I STRIKE. WHEN THEY FIGHT MY FLESH, THE GATE OPENS. DIVIDE AND CONQUER, TRAVELER. YOUR STRATEGIC ADVANTAGE—FOREKNOWLEDGE—ANS NOTHING WHEN I ATTACK FROM TWO DIRECTIONS."
"Then I'll stop both," I said aloud.
Chrissy watched from the doorway. "Talking to it?"
"It's gloating. Thinks having two simultaneous threats overwhelms us."
"Does it?"
"Maybe. But I've been preparing for Season 3 for seven months. I know the canonical tiline. I know Billy gets possessed, becos the main host. I know the Spider Monster forms at the steel works. I know the gate key activates July 4th." I marked positions on my tactical map. "Knowledge is still advantage. I just have to use it right."
Eleven
The phone rang in California. I answered, knowing it was Steve before checking caller ID.
"You felt it," he said.
"Yes. Across all those miles. Sothing waking up, reaching out." My nose bled from the psychic strain. "It's different this ti. Smarter. More focused."
"It knows . Rembers from last year. This isn't random invasion—it's targeted attack."
"Do you need to co back?"
"Not yet. Stay in reserve. If things go catastrophically wrong, I'll call. But for now, you're safer there." His voice held weight I recognized. "It's hunting , El. Wants revenge for closing its gate. You being far away ans it can't use you as leverage."
"I can help—"
"You will. When the ti's right. But trust on this—stay hidden until I absolutely need you. That's the plan."
I wanted to argue. But Steve had saved multiple tis, had planned for futures I couldn't see. If he said wait, I'd wait.
"Be careful," I whispered.
"Always am. Talk soon."
Will
At school, kids gossiped about rats. Dead ones found in basents, alive ones acting wrong, aggressive packs near the old steel works.
"It's like they're organizing," soone said. "Moving with purpose."
I knew that purpose. Felt it through my residual connection to the Upside Down. The Mind Flayer was building sothing—physical form from possessed hosts, growing stronger as it consud more biomass.
And it was watching Steve specifically. I could sense its focus, its anger toward the person who'd freed .
He saved . Now it wants to hurt him for that.
After school, I found Steve at Scoops Ahoy. He served ice cream like nothing was wrong, but his silver scars pulsed faintly.
"You feel it too," I said quietly.
"Yeah. It's preparing. Using rats now, but soon it'll move to larger hosts. People." He glanced around, making sure no one overheard. "I need you to stay close to Joyce and Bob. If the Mind Flayer tries possessing anyone, you'll sense it first. That early warning could save lives."
"What about you?"
"I'm the target. It'll co for eventually. But I'm ready." His Phase 3 confidence was absolute. "I beat it once. I'll beat it again."
