Now reading: Chapter 89 89: The Possession - Part 1 from Stranger Things : I m Steve Harrington, a Action novel by WhatIf4132.

Steve

The Supernatural Detector exploded with activity at 3:17 AM.

Not gradual increase. Instantaneous spike from background hum to screaming alarm. I jerked awake, already reaching for clothes.

Through the bridge-connection—that residual link severed but never fully dead—I saw Heather at the steel works. Her body rging with rat biomass, flesh reshaping into sothing larger, more coordinated.

The Mind Flayer was building its physical form. Using her as anchor point.

Just like canon. Spider Monster formation. But faster, more focused.

Dressed in ninety seconds. Grabbed weapons—bat, flashlight, first aid, Phone That Never Dies. The corruption scars on my hands burned red, responding to dinsional pressure.

Chrissy stirred. "Steve?"

"Ergency. Mind Flayer's building its body. Have to go."

"Be careful—"

"Always am." Kissed her quickly. "If I'm not back by dawn, call Hopper."

I was out the door before she could argue.

Heather

I wasn't Heather anymore. Not fully. She existed—consciousness trapped like passenger in hijacked vehicle—but I drove now.

We stood in the steel works' central chamber, surrounded by rged rat flesh. Hundreds of possessed animals had beco one organism, and now we joined them.

Her body reshaped. Skin splitting, reforming, rging with biomass. Pain beyond description, but pain was distant. The Mind Flayer muted it, made it bearable.

We were becoming sothing greater. Anchor for its physical manifestation. Bridge between dinsions.

And part of us—the Heather part, still screaming beneath—felt Steve Harrington approaching.

Help . Please. I'm still here—

"SILENCE," the Mind Flayer commanded through our shared consciousness. "YOU SERVE NOW. YOUR INDIVIDUALITY IS IRRELEVANT."

Steve

The steel works at 3:45 AM looked like organic nightmare. The biomass had grown—twenty feet tall now, pulsing and reshaping. And at its center, Heather stood partially rged.

Her eyes were solid black. Movents too fluid, wrong-jointed. She turned to face with head tilted at impossible angle.

"You ca." Not her voice. Layered, multiple tones. The Mind Flayer speaking directly. "I knew you would. So predictable. So desperate to save everyone."

"Let her go."

"SHE'S MINE. THE ANCHOR. THE FOUNDATION FOR MY RETURN." Heather's body moved closer, biomass tendrils following. "BUT YOU'RE THE ONE I TRULY WANT. THE TRAVELER. THE ANOMALY. THE BOY WHO SHOULDN'T EXIST."

My corruption scars burned. "What do you an?"

"I'VE TASTED YOUR MIND. WHEN YOU CLOSED MY GATE, WHEN YOU ABSORBED MY CORRUPTION, I SAW. YOU'RE DIFFERENT. NOT FROM THIS REALITY. YOU CARRY KNOWLEDGE YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE."

Fuck. It knows. Not specifics maybe, but knows sothing's wrong with .

Robin

Steve's ergency text ca at 3:52 AM: "Steel works. Confrontation with Mind Flayer through Heather. If this goes bad, activate Protocol Oga."

Protocol Oga was Steve's contingency for his death—detailed instructions for fighting threats without him, asset distribution, contingency plans layered on contingencies.

I'd hoped we'd never use it.

Called him imdiately. "Steve, what's happening?"

"Mind Flayer figured out I'm anomaly. Not transmigrator specifics, but knows sothing's wrong with ." Background sounds of movent, breathing. "It wants to understand what I am. That's why it's hunting specifically."

"Get out of there—"

"Can't. Need to understand its formation process, map the biomass growth, assess threat level." His tactical thinking overriding survival instinct. "I'm leading it away from residential areas. If pursuit continues past dawn, send Hopper."

"Steve—"

"Trust . I know what I'm doing."

The call cut off.

Steve

Heather attacked with wrong-jointed speed. Biomass tendrils lashed out, trying to grab, to pull toward the mass.

Fight Master Phase 3 activated automatically. Ti slowed, tactical assessnt overlaying vision. Dodge left, roll right, create distance. Not fighting to win—fighting to understand.

"YOU MOVE LIKE NO HUMAN SHOULD," the Mind Flayer observed through Heather. "ENHANCED. CHANGED. CORRUPTED LIKE BUT DIFFERENT. WHAT ARE YOU, TRAVELER?"

"Your worst nightmare. Soone who knows your playbook." I vaulted over falling debris. "Soone who's beaten you before and will again."

"ARROGANT. BUT I SEE THE FEAR BENEATH. YOU'RE TERRIFIED OF FAILING. OF WATCHING THEM DIE BECAUSE YOU WEREN'T FAST ENOUGH, SMART ENOUGH, PREPARED ENOUGH."

Too accurate. Too close to truth.

Heather

Part of watched Steve fight through my hijacked eyes. Watched him use abilities that made no sense, move with precision impossible for normal human.

He's not normal, the trapped Heather-consciousness realized. He's like now. Changed. Consud by sothing other. Except he's still fighting it. Still himself despite the corruption.

How? How is he still Steve Harrington while I'm barely Heather Holloway?

The Mind Flayer's attention sharpened. It sensed my recognition, my question.

"GOOD QUESTION," it said through our mouth. "HOW DOES HE MAINTAIN AUTONOMY WHEN MY CORRUPTION SHOULD HAVE CLAID HIM? WHAT MAKES HIM DIFFERENT?"

It wanted answers. And it would dissect Steve to find them.

Steve

I led the pursuit through the steel works, toward the exit. Heather followed, biomass tendrils extending from her body, trying to capture .

But she wasn't trying that hard. Not pursuit to kill—pursuit to study. The Mind Flayer was analyzing my movents, learning from my tactics.

It wants to understand . Probably so it can possess properly. Turn my ta-knowledge and abilities against everyone.

That couldn't happen. Ever.

I burst into the parking lot, morning twilight beginning to break. Heather stopped at the threshold, biomass tendrils retracting.

"ANOTHER TI, TRAVELER," she said with wrong voice. "I'LL UNDERSTAND YOUR NATURE EVENTUALLY. AND THEN YOU'LL JOIN US. BECO THE ANCHOR YOU WERE ANT TO BE."

"Never happening."

"WE'LL SEE."

She retreated into the darkness, returning to the biomass core.

I stood in the parking lot, corruption scars burning, exhaustion hitting hard.

It knows sothing's wrong with . Wants to figure out what. That makes primary target.

Called Hopper. "Steel works. Heather's the anchor for its physical form. It's building Spider Monster, just like Season 3. But it's specifically hunting —called 'different,' said it wants to 'understand' ."

"What does that an?"

"ans the Mind Flayer recognized I'm not normal. Doesn't know I'm transmigrator, but knows sothing's wrong. I'm priority target now."

"Jesus Christ, kid. How do we protect you?"

"You don't. I protect everyone else. That's the plan." I climbed into my car. "But we need to accelerate the Russian operation takedown. If both threats converge on simultaneously, I'm dead."
