Aria walked through the corridor without pausing, her thoughts already moving toward what ca next.

Outside the hall, the evening air of Magical City t her fully. The street beyond the Grey Shadow Hall entrance was wide and uneven.

Vendor stalls along the far edge were beginning to close for the night—cloth covers being pulled over displays, small fires being extinguished, the sll of cooked food and wood smoke drifting across the cooling air.

The sky above the rooftops had gone from amber to a deep bruised purple at the edges, and the first few stars were becoming visible in the darkening centre above. Lanterns were being lit along the main road, their light warm and unsteady in the evening wind.

Varis walked two steps behind her and one to the left. He had maintained that exact position for three years without being asked to do so.

Aria did not speak. She moved through the street with the particular quality of soone who knew exactly where they were going and had no interest in anything that was not in that direction. People stepped aside without fully understanding why—not because she demanded it, but because sothing in how she moved communicated clearly that the space in front of her was already accounted for.

She did not look back at the Grey Shadow Hall building as she left it.

Across Celestial Brook City, in four different compounds, sealed docunts bearing the Grey Shadow hallmark arrived within the sa hour.

In the southern quarter of Celestial Brook City, the Brooks Clan compound rose behind walls of pale dressed stone that caught the last evening light and held it longer than the surrounding buildings.

The entrance hall beyond the main gate was wide and deliberately proportioned—high ceilings, polished floors of grey-veined marble, lamps burning in pairs along the walls, producing even, shadowless light throughout the space. Everything in the Brooks compound was built to project a particular ssage—that the people inside it had both the resources and the judgnt to use them correctly.

Lady Seraphina Brooks received the docunt in her private study on the compound's upper level. She was a woman of forty-eight with a long, composed face and dark auburn hair worn in a single heavy arrangent that sat precisely at the base of her neck. Her robes were deep green trimd in silver—the Brooks Clan colours—and she wore them with the ease of soone whose appearance was simply another form of communication that required no particular effort. Her cultivation had reached Soul Manifestation Level 5 Peak Stage, and it showed in the particular density of her presence—the way the air in a room seed to acknowledge her before she had done anything.

She broke the seal and read, standing at her desk, one hand resting flat on the surface. Her expression did not change significantly. A slight narrowing of her eyes on the two-mber rule, then a return to neutral. She set the docunt down, straightened, and looked at the window overlooking the compound's inner courtyard, where two of her senior fighters were still running evening drills below.

She watched them for a mont without speaking. Then she picked the docunt up and read it again from the beginning.

In the eastern district, the Clark Clan compound was older than most of its neighbours—built in an earlier period when the city's architecture favoured function over impression. The walls were thick and dark, the interior rooms low-ceilinged and closed, the kind of space that retained heat in winter and stayed cool through sumr. It had the feeling of a place that had survived many things by simply being harder to damage than everything around it.

Darius Clark read the docunt at the head of a long dining table that had clearly been used as a working surface for years—its edges worn, its surface marked with old ink, and the rings left by cups and lamp bases. He was a man of fifty-four, dium height, with a compact and entirely practical build and a face that was unremarkable in every feature except his eyes, which were a very dark grey and moved through information with a speed that his expression never reflected. Soul Manifestation Level 5 Peak Stage—the sa ceiling as Seraphina Brooks, reached through a thod that was considerably less elegant and considerably more direct. He read the docunt once, quickly.

Then he set it face down on the table and looked at the ceiling for a mont, his jaw moving slightly as though working through numbers. Then he turned it face up and read it again. When he finished the second reading, he called for his two senior cultivators by na, his voice carrying easily through the compound's thick walls.

His tone when he spoke was the tone of a man who had already made a decision and was now communicating the paraters of it to people whose job was to execute.

Two mbers. He already knew which two.

In the northern residential quarter, the Brown Clan compound was quieter than the others at this hour. The buildings were well-maintained but without excess—a clan that managed its resources carefully and showed them without anything unnecessary. The lamps in the main hall burned at the right level. The furniture was solid and unchipped. Nothing was worn beyond use, and nothing was newer than it needed to be.

The Walker Clan's main hall had not changed in the hour since the ssenger ca.

The black stone walls held the lamplight the sa way they always did — absorbing most of it, returning only enough to make the room functional rather than warm.

The air inside was cool and carried nothing — no food sll, no wood smoke, no softness of any kind.

The hall existed for one purpose, and everything in it reflected that without apology.

Zilton Walker stood at the head of the table. He had sent word to five people fifteen minutes ago. He had not sat down while he waited.

They arrived within minutes of each other, entering through the hall's single door in the order they had been summoned.
