After coming back empty-handed once again, Xu Ke’s face was etched with anxiety and depression, which were impossible to conceal. In just a short week, Xu Ke appeared significantly thinner. The once well-fitting clothes now hung loosely, looking much emptier.
"Are you okay?" A young man brought a glass of water to Xu Ke, asking with a worried expression.
Xu Ke looked at the man’s eyes, which could not hide the schadenfreude, and silently lowered his long eyelashes to cover up his emotions. After so many days, he really wanted to sign the guy up for an acting class so he could learn how to perform better when pretending with him here. Xu Ke almost broke character a few tis looking into those eyes, but thankfully, he managed to stay in control each ti.
The young man didn’t know what Xu Ke was thinking. Every ti he asked Xu Ke about his situation these days, Xu Ke would react like this. The young man didn’t even need Xu Ke to say anything to know he hadn’t made any money today. Seeing Xu Ke in this state always made him inexplicably happy.
"I see that you never make any money and are in a worse state day by day. If this continues, I’m afraid your body won’t hold up. How about I introduce you to a job?" the young man suggested tentatively.
Xu Ke lifted his head, his expression excited yet restrained by hesitation. "I don’t know what kind of job it is. I studied photography in college, and most jobs aren’t suitable for my major. I don’t even know what I can do." Xu Ke’s eyes revealed an appropriate hint of confusion, which made the young man even more pleased.
"Don’t worry, you can definitely do this job. It has no restrictions on major or education level," the young man reassured, patting Xu Ke on the shoulder with a look that said "trust ."
As expected, upon hearing the young man’s words, Xu Ke’s eyes lit up instantly, as if invigorated with boundless energy. "What kind of job is it?"
"Sales," the young man responded.
Upon hearing this answer, Xu Ke’s once upright posture slumped again, and the light in his eyes quickly vanished, making the young man’s brow twitch.
"Why that expression? Don’t you want to do it?" the young man asked in disbelief.
Xu Ke’s face displayed an expression of hesitation and conflict. "How much can a salesperson make in a month anyway," he muttered softly. "Relying on sales to pay off my debt might take more than a decade." Xu Ke’s expression turned as if the sky had fallen.
The young man watched Xu Ke’s expression, making his brow twitch again. "It’s not that exaggerated. Salespeople make a lot of money nowadays. Just look at . I’m only in my twenties and I’ve already bought a house and have savings. The 200,000 I lent you to pay off your debt was all earned by . If this business didn’t make money, where would all this co from?" The young man used himself as an example.
Seeing the young man in this state, Xu Ke’s expression showed signs of wavering. "Really, make that much?"
Although Xu Ke’s tone still held uncertainty, the young man knew Xu Ke was already wavering. As long as he pushed a bit more, Xu Ke would definitely take the bait.
"Why would I lie to you? You owe money, so of course I hope you earn as much as possible. The more you make, the sooner you can pay back. You see, right?" With those words, Xu Ke unsurprisingly seed even more shaken.
"What kind of sales are you talking about?" Xu Ke asked hesitantly, appearing as if he would agree as long as the young man nudged him slightly.
"dicine sales," the young man replied.
"Let tell you, the pharmaceutical industry has deep waters. You see the dicine we usually buy for hundreds of bucks, the cost price might only be a few dozen. Once flipped, how much profit do you think is made?" The young man gave Xu Ke a mysterious nudge, smiling.
"The dicines we sell are legal, right?"
"Don’t worry. The source of the dicine is absolutely legitimate. Our supply channels are the sa as those of major pharmacies. The difference is we have contacts at the factory, so we get a discount price, pay less, and earn more," the young man explained confidently.
Watching the young man speak so passionately, Xu Ke’s eyes gradually beca determined. It seed he had already made up his mind. Under the young man’s gaze, Xu Ke hesitated only briefly before nodding in agreent.
"Alright, I’ll work with you. Once I make enough money, I’ll make sure to pay you back first," Xu Ke said sincerely.
"What kind of person do you think I am? I know you’ll definitely repay . Don’t pressure yourself so much. Let’s just take it as it cos. As long as you work diligently, money won’t be a problem," the young man assured with a pat on his chest.
Seeing the young man acting so earnestly in guiding him, Xu Ke felt increasingly grateful to the young man. Although he initially resented the arrangent from above, a perverse satisfaction started to build within him, diminishing his resistance to it.
The young man promised to take Xu Ke into the business of dicine sales. The following morning, he was eagerly hurrying Xu Ke to head out. His actions were swift; he ca to wake Xu Ke before the day had completely dawned, even before most breakfast shops outside opened.
"Why are you waking so early? Is there sothing urgent?" Xu Ke groggily asked, sitting up from his bed, his hair sticking up in a tuft — a clear sign he wasn’t fully awake.
"Did you forget? Today I’m taking you to collect the goods. We’re going to start selling. It’s already late, hurry and get yourself ready," the young man prompted, already impeccably dressed, glancing at his newly bought watch from a few days ago to emphasize his point.
"Huh? What ti is it?" Xu Ke picked up his phone to check, groggily asking, "It’s not even five yet. Are we really leaving so early?"
"It’s not early. The place to pick up the goods isn’t near here, and it’ll take us two hours to drive there. By the ti we arrive, it’ll be past six. Factor in so selling ti, and it’s perfect," the young man encouraged, "If you want to make money, don’t complain about the hard work. Or, do you not want to make money?"
Xu Ke sighed deeply in bed, then rubbed his face vigorously to wake himself up before replying, "Go out first, I’ll change and join you."
Seeing Xu Ke starting to get up, the man nodded and exited Xu Ke’s room.
As soon as the door clicked shut, the sleepiness vanished from Xu Ke’s eyes, leaving darkness enveloping his pupils.
