Kingmaker in the Shadows

"She has persuaded multiple noble houses to submit."

Leon nodded slowly.

"And the rest?"

Ronan hesitated.

"So asked for ti. So refused."

A brief lift touched Leon’s mouth, just for a pulse.

Yet the grin faded.

Frost crept across Leon’s face. "No."

Cold crept into the yard, tugging at Ronan’s skin. A shift hung in the air, quiet but sharp.

Just as Leon started to talk, Ronan stepped in. Then silence fell again.

"There is sothing else you should know."

His eyes landed on the man.

Finding each phrase took ti.

"Our scouts have returned from across the kingdom with troubling news. The nobles who refused to submit to us... have been sighted in the northern territories. They’ve reported unusual movents."

Leon’s gaze hardened.

"Explain."

"A group of northern nobles - along with the ones who rejected our terms - are secretly gathering."

Leon’s eyes narrowed.

"Conspiring."

A pause flickered across Ronan’s face, brief as a blink.

"...Most likely, yes."

Leon fell silent.

A thick silence settled in the space around them.

A breath drew in, slow like he was bracing to wade into sothing vast. Ronan held it there, just a second too long, eyes steady on what waited ahead.

"Yes, my king..." he said again, voice lower now. "This matter concerns... Count William."

It took Leon a mont before he moved at all.

Not outwardly.

Yet there it was - the slight pull near his eyes - Ronan noticed.

Leon gave a nod, voice low. Move ahead.

His fingers laced together at the small of his back.

"Our shadow scouts intercepted fragnts of information from several noble ssengers over the past three days. They weren’t carrying letters. They weren’t using official routes."

Leon’s gaze sharpened.

"They were moving quietly," Ronan continued. "eting in small groups. Avoiding main roads. Using dead drops."

A quiet hush followed after Leon exhaled. The air seed heavier now, sohow.

"William is gathering people."

"Yes."

Last thing on his mind was asking nas.

He already knew.

Ronan spoke anyway.

"Baron Halden. Viscount Renn. Duke Seln. And at least two younger lords whose families previously held military authority."

Leon’s eyes darkened.

"They’re choosing their side."

"Yes."

Empty air hung where words should go.

The spring murmured.

Leaves whispered.

Sowhere in the palace, servants moved.

Life continued.

Out of nowhere, Leon spoke without rush. His words moved slow, like they had nowhere to be.

"Which side?"

Ronan hesitated.

"That... is unclear."

His neck shifted a little, Leon’s gaze sliding sideways.

His eyes locked onto Ronan. The mont hung still.

"They haven’t declared their loyalty for Gary."

Leon’s eyes narrowed.

"They haven’t declared their loyalty for either."

Ronan nodded.

A puff of air left Leon’s nostrils. Quietly, he let it out without speaking.

"So, William is playing kingmaker."

He stood quiet, letting the words hang without reply.

A single twitch moved his hand. One mont, still - then a shift beneath the skin.

After that, silence settled in. He just stopped speaking.

Stillness that hums beneath the skin. A pause charged with what cos next.

The dangerous kind.

A quiet shift ca over his face, gold eyes clouded now, lost in motion just beneath. Thoughts pulled tight like strings, tangling one into another, snapping loose, then tying again. Patterns rose and fell without sound, each a path half-born before vanishing.

Fingers tapping, Ronan stayed silent.

A second stretched into sixty. Then silence settled.

His gaze rose last of all.

"Has William made contact with foreign powers?"

Ronan’s expression tightened.

"...We can’t confirm it."

A brief pause.

"But activity near the northern border has increased. The Skyfall Kingdom has begun large-scale military drills. Scouts report a sharp rise in troop movents - soldiers, scouts, and supply units crossing from the other side."

Ronan’s voice hardened.

"They aren’t moving like border patrols."

Leon’s eyes narrowed.

"Explain."

"They’re moving in coordinated formations. Rotations. Staggered deploynts. Advance positioning."

Ronan exhaled slowly.

"Patterns that suggest preparation. Not defense."

Out of nowhere, a sharp chill flickered through Leon’s eyes.

"So William may already be negotiating with Skyfall... using them to apply pressure here."

Ronan nodded once.

"Yes."

Leon said nothing.

Heavy ca the silence after. It hung there, slow and thick.

Not explosive.

Not emotional.

A thought moves without sound, sorting dangers one by one. It lines each up, quiet and steady. Not loud, just focused. Each threat finds its place, not shouted but held. The stillness holds weight. Nothing rushes. Everything waits until it must act.

With slow hands, Ronan cracked it apart. It split under his fingers like sothing ant to open.

"There is sothing else."

Frozen on the spot, Leon did not look away.

Ronan continued.

"So of the nobles who refuse to bow... are still publicly declaring loyalty to King Gary."

A slight lean pulled Leon’s head sideways.

"Publicly."

"Yes."

A small bend tugged at Leon’s mouth. The shape stayed quiet, almost hidden.

"A beautiful lie."

Ronan hesitated, then added, "But privately... their movents suggest they are not waiting for Gary to return."

A soft sigh slipped out from Leon. Quietly, he exhaled into the still air.

"They’re hedging."

"Yes."

A shape of dark tal stuck in rock caught Leon’s eye.

"They don’t believe Gary will win."

Finding no reason to argue, Ronan let the claim stand.

Firm but quiet, Leon spoke without shifting his tone.

"And they don’t believe I’m stable enough yet."

A shadow crossed Ronan’s face as he dipped his chin. The light caught the edge of his brow just before it fell.

"They believe you are strong."

His eyes landed on Leon for a mont. Then away.

"But they don’t believe you are... secure."

Leon understood.

A ruler climbing quick often didn’t last long.

A storm.

Not a season.

Back ca Leon’s gaze, settling on the blade.

"Gary spent decades building fear."

"Yes."

"I’ve spent seven days cutting rot."

Ronan nodded.

A flicker of tension crossed Leon’s face. His jaw clenched, just a shade tighter than before.

"They think fear lasts longer than order."

Ronan said nothing.

Facing around toward the man, Leon moved with asured slowness.

"Tell sothing honestly, Ronan."

Ronan straightened.

"Yes, my king."

"If Gary walked back into this capital tomorrow with an army... how many nobles would truly fight for him?"

Frowning slightly, Ronan stayed quiet at first.

Then - "Very few."
