A King Who Shares the Crown

"No."

Several of them blinked, startled by the blunt honesty.

But he wasn’t finished.

"I’m offering it because you’re capable."

That struck deeper than affection ever could.

Nova’s jaw tightened slightly, pride and responsibility colliding in her expression.

Syra gave a faint smirk, but the playful glint in her eyes had disappeared.

Now there was sothing sharper there.

Sothing serious.

She leaned forward, elbows resting on her knees as she watched him, studying his face as if trying to asure the weight of what he was asking.

"And if we fail?"

Leon t her gaze without hesitation.

"Then we fail together."

The words landed simply, but the certainty behind them carried far more weight.

Kyra lowered her eyes briefly, a quiet breath slipping from her lips as the answer settled over her. For a mont she looked almost overwheld.

"You trust us with that much?" she asked softly.

Leon didn’t blink.

"With everything."

Silence fell again — heavier, but different.

The room seed to hold its breath.

Lira was the next to speak. Her silver eyes remained steady, but there was a faint sharpness in them now, the kind that appeared when she was testing soone.

"If we accept..." she said slowly, "we won’t be decorations."

Leon’s lips curved slightly.

"You never were."

That answer earned the faintest twitch of a smile from Rias.

Sona leaned back a little in her chair, folding her hands in her lap as she studied him carefully.

"Court is cruel," she said gently. "Politics is crueler."

Leon’s voice did not waver.

"So am I."

A faint, dark edge slipped through the calm words, just enough to remind everyone in the room exactly who he was.

Rias looked around the table.

One by one she studied their faces.

Kyra’s quiet intensity.

Lira’s sharp curiosity.

Sona’s calm caution.

And beneath all of it, she saw it clearly.

Fear, yes.

But also pride.

Her crimson eyes returned to Leon.

"Why us?" she asked again.

Leon answered without hesitation.

"Because you know . You know what I want this kingdom to beco. And you won’t betray that vision."

He paused, letting the words sink in before continuing, his tone growing firr.

"And more importantly... if you all stand in the council, then every decision made there ultimately answers to . No hidden factions. No divided authority. No corruption growing in the shadows."

His golden eyes hardened slightly.

"I will rule without fear of corruption... or backstabbing."

For a mont no one spoke.

Then Kyra’s eyebrow slowly rose.

"How high your view of yourself," she said dryly.

Lira tilted her head, a teasing smile forming at the corner of her lips.

"So that ans," she said lightly, "you want to burden us with that responsibility?"

Leon gave a sharp, amused smile.

"Well... don’t you think so, my sweetheart?"

Rias snorted softly.

"You’re unbelievable."

Sona shook her head, though there was faint amusent in her eyes now.

"You ask us to carry half the kingdom and call it a complint."

Leon only shrugged slightly, completely unbothered.

"Who else would I trust with it?"

The room quieted again.

This ti the silence was softer — thoughtful.

But then—

Fey swallowed quietly. Her fingers twisted nervously in the edge of her apron before she finally gathered the courage to speak.

"Majesty... we’re maids," she said softly.

The words hung in the air like a fragile thread.

Leon’s gaze shifted to her. Then slowly, deliberately, his eyes moved across the others seated around the table—Rui, Lena, Mona, Lilyn, Chloe, Mira. One by one, he t their eyes.

"You are not ’just’ maids. I already made that clear before," he said firmly. His voice carried the calm certainty of soone who had already weighed every consequence. "You are my wives now—officially. And more importantly... as forr maids, you understand how an estate truly runs. You’ve managed households more efficiently than most nobles manage entire cities."

The words landed heavier than anyone expected.

Lilyn’s hazel eyes widened slightly. She blinked once, clearly caught off guard by the blunt praise.

Chloe shifted in her seat, her voice barely more than a whisper.

"But the court—"

"The court answers to ," Leon cut in.

The room stilled.

There it was again.

The king.

Far from the one they laughed beside. Never the spouse they poked fun at during als. Yet always the leader wearing authority like an old coat - whether asked or not.

Catching her breath now, Cynthia let it out soft and long, like silence after a storm. Watching him close, those dark steady eyes of hers stayed fixed on Leon.

It was clear you’d made up your mind, she murmured.

A small smile tugged at Leon’s mouth.

"Yes."

Out ca a quick chuckle from Syra, low and soft. She tilted backward in the seat, one shoulder lifting slightly. A lopsided smile tugged at her lips, staying there without hurry.

"You manipulative bastard."

A small smile grew wider instead of answering right away. Leon stayed quiet, but his expression said enough.

A flicker in her eyes showed she saw it - the tight jaws, the way hands gripped cups too hard. Silence sat heavy, but Nova caught every unspoken word hanging above them.

Weight settled in her words, quiet but firm. "We stand by him," she stated, steady. Not a shout - still, it pressed into the air. What remains true? The sa as before

A tiny nod ca from Kyra, her green eyes unblinking. Her gaze stayed fixed, cutting through the quiet like sothing edged.

"If he walks into fire," she said evenly, "we don’t let him burn alone."

Foot tapping, Natasha let out a quiet snort. Her arms folded tight across her chest.

"I didn’t sign up to sit around sipping wine while you carry the weight of an empire on your back."

Sothing close to laughter slipped into the air, breaking the quiet weight between them. A small shift happened then - not much - yet enough to let breath co easier.

Out ca her words after a deep pull of air. Soft as it sounded, a steady strength lived under each syllable she spoke.

"If this is what you need from us... we won’t refuse."

Her fingers brushed against her mom’s palm, a quiet press sealing what words left unsaid. A tilt of the head followed, soft but sure.

Now breaking the quiet, Aria shifted a little ahead. Her gaze, colored like dusk, held stillness inside it. Out ca words - smooth, steady, each one landing without rush.

"Then give us clear roles," she said. "Not vague promises. If we’re going to stand beside you, we need to know exactly what you expect from us."

Just then, Leon stared their way.

A hush settled, not awkward but full of weight. Through high panes, dawn’s glow reached across the floor, touching the tabletop with amber fingers. Food remained on dishes, als paused mid-bite. Silence stayed, thick without words.

His eyes didn’t scan them as if asuring rank or worth. Instead, he watched with sothing quieter - less judgnt, more observation. Not authority. Curiosity. A pause before speech, not command.

Far from plotting their actions step by step.

Like soone without a crown.

Just not in that role.

A man used to going it solo - after years of thinking he must bear every burden without help - was just beginning to see how shared strength could change that truth.

Warmth touched his gold-colored gaze, its usual intensity slipping like sand through fingers. A quiet mont passed, the hardness blurring at the edges.

"Good," he said at last. "That’s exactly what I wanted to hear."

Folding into the seat opposite, Rias let the chair take her weight at an unhurried angle. One ankle settled atop the other, deliberate. Her crimson hair slipped forward, catching light as it fell - a bright line against her collarbone.

Her crimson eyes studied him carefully.

"You didn’t doubt us," she murmured.

Leon said nothing.
