Eight Under His Gaze

"Yes... Love," Mia said softly.

Cassidy paused - just a flicker of doubt - before squaring her shoulders.

"Yes... husband," she replied, soft yet steady, refusing to let it tremble.

So of the won looked at each other without words. Not criticism - simply noticing. What passed among them held weight, though spoken by no one.

For a second, Leon watched. Not how they looked. Not the shape of things. Sothing underneath caught his eye instead.

"You two understand sothing better than the others," he said.

His voice carried no weight of demand. Only what was real.

"Care."

"Compassion."

"Pain."

Heavier than orders, the words fell.

Closing her hand just a bit, Cassidy felt her nails et skin. Not scared - no - this was sothing she knew too well.

Mia looked down briefly, her face easing into a quiet kind of understanding.

Leon continued.

"You will oversee healing, welfare, and civil support."

A hush nearly stirred in the room - yet faded without sound.

It was clear to each person present just what those words carried. A shared knowing settled without needing more said.

"You will be responsible for the people who cannot fight for themselves."

Her breath caught just a mont. Mia’s gaze stretched open, thin at the edges.

"That’s..."

Cassidy let the breath out, calm after the pause. The idea settled like dust.

"...everyone."

Leon nodded.

"Yes."

Silence followed.

Not empty silence.

Thoughts that push soone into deep thinking. A mind pressed by questions without clear answers. Pondering rises when comfort fades. Heavy ideas replace easy ones. Clarity cos through struggle, not ease.

Out of the corner of her eye, Lira turned her head just a bit, observing them without rush. Her voice ca slow - "Carrying that duty weighs more than steel ever could."

Sona tilted her head just slightly. Carrying it had beco tougher

Fingers locked tight across her chest, Rias let the smirk slip - just slightly. Not even triumph waited at the end of this

Fine details make all the difference, Aria said under her breath, calm but firm.

Mia pulled air into her lungs, bit by bit.

For a second, her hands shook - after that, they held firm.

Her chin rose slowly into the air.

"We won’t fail them."

Just quiet words. Not loud, not pretending.

Just quiet resolve.

A flicker passed over Cassidy’s face before she t the other woman’s gaze again, a small shift forward sealing their alignnt without words. The space between them closed by inches, yet everything changed.

"Not even one."

A hush moved across the space, barely noticed. Then stillness settled again.

Respect.

It wasn’t their strength that made the difference.

Yet they’d already agreed to a task harder than lifting weights.

A quiet pause settled as Leon studied their faces. After a breath, his head dipped just slightly.

It wasn’t loud.

Yet it held all the weight.

A hush hung in the air. One breath passed without sound.

Shoulders pulled back, almost without notice. Breaths slowed, timing shifting like dust settling. Eyes stuck on Leon - just a beat more than they should have. A silence moved between people, thin but real. Not fear. Not respect either.

Acknowledgnt.

Aria shifted her gaze, head leaning just a touch to one side. Her violet eyes lost their edge when she let out a quiet breath. Not once did he say anything good about them... The words slipped through her mouth like they belonged to soone else. A small smile showed anyway, pulling gently at the corner of her lips.

Cynthia stood close, voice steady as she answered. Not once did she turn his way while speaking - her eyes fixed ahead, expression hard to read. Yet sothing soft in her look gave her away.

A faint smile tugged at her lips even as Syra rocked back on her heels. Like shrugging off a heavy coat, she loosened her stance. Pressure like that? Not exactly her favorite thing. A creature charging headfirst would feel easier. Her words ca low - almost reluctant - but the spark in her eyes said otherwise.

Kyra gave her a glance. Either choice would’ve drawn complaints

"Obviously."

A few faint chuckles rippled through the group, low and restrained—but real.

That was new.

Leon didn’t interrupt it. He let it exist for a mont... then leaned back slightly.

The throne hall no longer felt like a place of appointnt.

It felt like sothing being built.

Layer by layer.

Role by role.

Purpose by purpose.

The air itself felt heavier—not suffocating, but grounded. Like stone settling into place.

Black stood with arms crossed, a faint smile on his face.

"This... is a kingdom now."

There was no exaggeration in his voice. Just quiet certainty.

Johny nodded, eyes scanning the room like he was seeing it differently now.

"Not just an army."

Ronan exhaled slowly, his shoulders easing as if a weight had finally found its place.

"A system."

"Finally," Black added under his breath, "sothing that won’t collapse the mont Leon looks away."

Johny smirked. "You say that like you weren’t part of the chaos."

"I was the best part of the chaos."

Ronan shook his head, though the corner of his mouth twitched. "You were the loudest part."

Leon didn’t react to their exchange—but his gaze shifted again.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Toward the remaining figures.

---------------

The Ones Left

Rias.

Fey.

Rui.

Lena.

Mona.

Lilyn.

Chloe.

Mira.

They stood together.

Not stepping forward.

Not speaking.

But watching him.

Waiting.

The atmosphere changed again.

This ti—

It was sharper.

More personal.

The earlier ease faded, replaced by sothing quieter... tighter.

Rias crossed her arms, a faint smirk resting on her lips, but her eyes were sharp—too sharp to be careless.

"So," she said lightly, tilting her head, "we’re the leftovers?"

Her tone was teasing.

But not entirely.

Behind her, Fey let out a small huff. "You always say it like that," she muttered, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Makes it sound worse than it is."

"It is worse," Rui added bluntly, her arms folded tightly. "Everyone else got clear roles. We’re just... standing here."

Lena glanced at Leon, then away again. "Maybe we’re last because we’re different," she said softly, though even she didn’t sound fully convinced.

Mona crossed her arms tighter. "Or because he hasn’t decided yet."

"That’s worse," Mira whispered.

Lilyn stepped slightly forward, her expression gentle but steady. "No," she said quietly, her honey-colored eyes calm. "If it were uncertainty... he wouldn’t have called us last."

That made a few of them pause.

Even Rias.

Chloe, standing near Lilyn, looked up at Leon with quiet, observant eyes. She didn’t speak—but she didn’t look worried either. Just... curious.

As if she was trying to understand sothing deeper than the rest.

Syra leaned slightly toward Kyra from the side, whispering, "See? This is the part where it gets interesting."

Kyra didn’t take her eyes off Leon. "It was always going to."

Leon didn’t smile.

He looked at them carefully.

Each one.

Not a glance. Not a sweep.

A asure.

Rias felt it first—the way his gaze didn’t stop at her expression, but seed to look through it. The smirk on her lips didn’t fade... but it stilled.

Fey straightened unconsciously.

Rui’s jaw tightened.

Lena’s fingers curled slightly at her side.

Mona stopped shifting.

Lilyn remained calm—but attentive.

Chloe didn’t move at all.

Mira swallowed.

Then—

He spoke.

"Now..."

A pause.

His voice dropped slightly.

"You eight... are left."

The words hung in the air.

No one interrupted.

No one joked.

Even Syra stayed quiet this ti.

Because sothing in his tone had changed.

And this ti—

The tension didn’t fade.

It deepened.

Because whatever ca next—

Would not be simple.
