Chains Disguised as Protection [Part-2]

"My king…"

He took a step forward, slow, deliberate, like he was choosing every inch of it.

"…This is not sothing a ruler should do."

His eyes didn't waver. Not out of defiance—but because looking away would've felt like betrayal.

Black's voice followed.

Low.

Restrained.

"…You're binding your subordinates with your own life."

He tilted his head slightly, watching Leon like he was trying to read sothing buried deeper than words.

"That's not a shield," he added after a mont. "That's a chain."

Johny let out a quiet breath, rubbing the back of his neck before speaking.

"…That's not leadership."

He didn't look Leon in the eye at first. Then he did. And when he did, there was no accusation there—just frustration.

"And you know it."

Leon listened.

Didn't interrupt.

Didn't react.

Not even a flicker.

His gaze moved across them—one by one—taking in every word, every expression, every trace of resistance.

He just let them speak.

Let them push.

Let them resist.

Because he expected it.

Because a part of him had already heard all of this… before any of them opened their mouths.

Rias stepped closer.

Not rushed. Not hesitant. Just… certain.

The space between them shrank until it wasn't just distance anymore—it was presence. Pressure. Sothing personal.

She stopped right in front of him, close enough to catch the faint rise and fall of his breath.

Her crimson eyes searched his face, not for answers—but for cracks.

"…Look at ."

Leon t her eyes.

Not just a glance—he held it. Steady. Unflinching. Like he was daring her to find sothing beneath the surface he hadn't already buried.

"…Do you really think I would let you die?" she asked softly.

Her voice wasn't loud, but it carried weight—the kind that ca from soone who had already made that decision long ago.

He didn't answer.

Didn't look away either.

That silence stretched just enough to sting.

Her fingers curled slightly at her side.

"…Then why are you doing the sa thing?"

The question didn't co out sharp. It ca out tired.

For a mont—

Just a mont—

Sothing flickered in his expression.

A fracture.

Small. Almost invisible.

But she saw it.

Then it was gone.

His face settled back into that sa calm, distant control.

"…Because I know you."

Simple.

Straight.

And sohow… colder than anything else he could've said.

That made her jaw tighten.

A quiet breath left her, slow and controlled, but it didn't hide the tension in her shoulders.

"You don't get to decide that alone," she muttered, barely above a whisper. "You don't get to carry everyone like we're just… weight."

Sona shook her head slowly.

"…There are other ways."

Her tone was gentler, but there was a quiet insistence behind it. She stepped closer, just enough to close the distance without crossing into confrontation.

"We can think this through," she added. "We always do."

Leon leaned back slightly.

A subtle shift—but it created space.

Distance.

"…No."

One word.

Firm.

Final.

Lira stepped forward.

Not hesitant. Not soft.

"…There are always other ways."

Her gaze locked onto his, sharper now. Challenging.

"You're just refusing to see them," she continued, her voice tightening. "Or worse—you're ignoring them."

Leon's gaze shifted to her.

asured.

Unmoved.

"…Not fast enough."

That—

That changed the tone.

The air itself seed to tighten.

Nova narrowed her eyes.

"…So this is about speed?"

There was a bite in her voice now. Not anger—yet—but it was getting close.

Leon didn't deny it.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No apology.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

The kind that pressed against the chest.

Cynthia's voice dropped.

"…You're rushing."

Her eyes didn't leave him. Not for a second.

Leon's eyes sharpened slightly.

"…I'm moving."

A small difference in words.

A massive difference in aning.

"I don't have the luxury to slow down," he added quietly. "Not anymore."

The words didn't echo—but they lingered, hanging in the air like sothing heavier than sound.

Cassidy frowned.

Her arms crossed, but it wasn't defensive—it was controlled frustration. Her fingers pressed lightly into her sleeves, as if she were holding herself back from saying sothing sharper.

"…At what cost?"

Her voice didn't rise. If anything, it dropped—quieter, tighter. That made it worse.

Leon's gaze shifted toward her, but only for a second. Just enough to acknowledge the question.

Not enough to answer it.

Leon didn't answer that.

Because they already knew.

Everything.

A faint breath left Ronan as he stepped forward again, boots scraping softly against the floor. He stopped just short of the invisible line no one dared cross.

"My king… reconsider this."

There was no defiance in his tone. Just weight. Just… concern, carefully restrained.

Black inclined his head slightly, his expression steady, but his eyes sharper than usual.

"…We will follow your command without this."

A quiet agreent. A line drawn without force.

Johny let out a small, almost humorless breath, rubbing the back of his neck before speaking.

"You don't need chains for loyalty."

There was sothing raw in that sentence—sothing personal. Not just a statent, but a reminder.

Leon looked at them.

All three.

One by one.

He didn't rush it. Didn't interrupt. He let their words settle, let their resistance breathe in the space between them.

His expression didn't harden.

But it didn't soften either.

"…I know."

Simple.

Too simple.

And sohow, that made it heavier than anything else he could've said.

Ronan's jaw tightened slightly.

Johny's hand stilled.

Black's gaze flickered—just for a mont.

Because that answer didn't reassure.

It confird sothing else entirely.

"…That's why this isn't about loyalty."
