Yang Ping returns to Sanbo Hospital at least once a week. Though it’s said to be a "return," Sanbo Research Institute is originally inside Sanbo Hospital.
At eight in the morning, he arrives at the trauma orthopedics departnt, where the hallway is bustling with familiar faces. A nurse pushes a treatnt cart past and nods with a smile: "Good morning, Professor Yang!" A young doctor carrying a stack of dical records walks towards him, pauses for a mont, and quickly sidesteps to make way: "Professor Yang is back!" He responds one by one, without stopping his stride.
This corridor, he has walked through countless tis.
When he first ca to Sanbo, he started from here. At that ti he was just an ordinary attending doctor, following Director Han every day, doing rounds, surgery, and writing dical records, feeling full of energy.
Later, he left for the Institute, leaving this place behind. But every ti he returns, he still feels a sense of closeness.
The current director of orthopedics is Tan Boyun, in his forties, with great skills and a knack for managent. However, Tan Boyun is not here today, he’s gone to a eting. The old staff of the orthopedics is still around, Director Ouyang’s dical team, Director Bai’s dical team, they’re all still here. There are also so new dical teams composed of young doctors he doesn’t know. Those young folks look at him with curiosity and awe, greeting him respectfully.
Today, he is looking for Director Bai.
Director Bai leads a dical team that is the most distinctive in the orthopedics.
This distinction is not based on skill but physique.
Director Bai himself is a big fatty weighing over two hundred pounds. He is 1.7 ters tall and weighs 230 pounds, walking like a moving hill. His white gown is specially made, larger than others, yet even so, it fits tightly on him, like a sausage about to burst.
Under Director Bai, there’s an attending doctor nicknad "Fatty." Fatty’s weight is conservatively estimated to be around two hundred as well; standing next to Director Bai, they look like a pair of inseparable brothers.
Director Bai also has a graduate student known as "Little Fatty." Little Fatty is slimr than Director Bai and Fatty but still weighs around 180 to 190 pounds. When the three are together, the visual effect is quite striking, and they are humorously referred to as the "most heavyweight dical team" in orthopedics.
Just as Yang Ping reaches the entrance of the ward where Director Bai’s team is located, he hears a burst of laughter coming from one of the rooms.
He peeks in and sees Director Bai conducting rounds with Fatty and Little Fatty. The three squeeze into a ward, crowding the already small space. An elderly lady lies in bed, surrounded by these giants, looking sowhat terrified, like a little rabbit surrounded by three bears.
"Auntie, don’t be nervous," Director Bai’s voice is gentle, paired with his physique, creating a strangely adorable contrast, "We are just doing a normal check-up, to see how well you are recovering."
The elderly lady looks at him, then at Fatty, and finally at Little Fatty, her lips move and she finally utters, "Doctor, is your hospital cafeteria particularly good?"
Fatty pauses and then bursts into laughter: "Auntie, you’ve hit the nail on the head! Our hospital cafeteria’s als are unbeatable!"
Little Fatty nods in agreent: "Yes, yes, there’s roast goose, barbecued pork, clay pot rice... particularly delicious."
The elderly lady looks even more terrified: "Do you... eat there every day?"
Director Bai waves his hand, seriously saying: "No, no, we only eat there five days a week."
The elderly lady: "..."
Yang Ping stands at the door, almost bursting into laughter.
After finishing their rounds, the three co out of the ward just in ti to see Yang Ping.
Director Bai’s eyes light up, his large figure approaching with unexpected agility: "Professor Yang! You’re back!"
Fatty and Little Fatty also call out: "Hello, Professor Yang!"
Yang Ping smiles and nods: "Your ward rounds are lively."
Director Bai chuckles, patting his belly: "There’s no other way, it’s our team’s characteristic."
Fatty adds: "Professor Yang, you wouldn’t know, our team has a nickna, ’the heavyweight dical team.’"
Little Fatty says: "Not just heavyweight, but also aningful. Our patients particularly like us, saying they feel reassured just looking at us."
Yang Ping curiously asks: "Why?"
Little Fatty seriously replies: "Because we look stable! Our hefty build is like a stabilizing force. Patients say they see us and feel assured the surgery will succeed."
Fatty nods: "Yes, so patients say when they see us, they know the hospital isn’t short on food, and they feel secure."
Yang Ping is laughing uncontrollably.
These three truly are the three treasures of orthopedics.
The three accompany him, chatting as they walk. When they reach the doctor’s office door, Director Bai pushes it open: "Professor Yang, want to co in and sit?"
Yang Ping nods and follows them in.
Director Bai’s office is small but neatly organized. Against one wall is a row of file cabinets packed with dical records. On the office desk are a computer, a stack of dical records, and... an opened pack of snacks.
Yang Ping glances at the pack of snacks; it’s a bag of chips.
Following his gaze, Director Bai laughs embarrassedly: "Well... just had sothing to fill my belly before rounds."
Fatty rcilessly adds: "Director, that was your third bag this morning."
Director Bai glares at him: "If you don’t speak, no one will think you’re mute."
He turns to Yang Ping, quickly explaining: "Recently on a diet, trying to lose weight, using these for energy when hungry. Mainly because they’re convenient and don’t take up much space."
