Troy:
"Oh God, that must be terrible for you," I told Haiden as I sat beside him.
"You are married to the sa girl you cannot stand."
By the ti we reached the ground where they had kept Clentine in a cage, it was already too late. She had begun her transition.
After that, everything descended into chaos.
Ian shifted as well because he wanted to draw the attention away from her and toward himself. In the end, he must have decided that it was better to go through it with her than to let her face it alone.
So many warriors were sent against us that we spent the next two hours fighting without pause.
Eventually, they arrested us.
They claid the entire public was furious that we had sided with monsters. Now we were all sitting inside a dungeon.
The headmaster had been released for the mont so he could have a conversation with the council.
Until then, Haiden, Leysa, Fauna, and I were sitting together in a room.
Since then, we had all been sitting together, sharing everything. The two girls were seated side by side, talking quietly.
As soon as I said that, I saw Fauna lift her head and look at Haiden. Haiden imdiately shot a sharp look.
"I do not hate her. Who told you that?" he snapped.
He had completely changed his tone. He began saying sothing entirely different from what he used to say in front of .
"Do you not rember? We both used to tease her about it," I reminded Fauna, then glanced at Haiden.
He narrowed his eyes at .
"I did that because when I like soone, I bully them. Understand?" Haiden shot back.
My smirk widened.
"Oh, so you liked her," I teased.
We were still covered in dried blood. Of course, we had managed to save our own girls.
The way Haiden’s attention had been entirely on Fauna in the field, the way he had protected her, told everything. I had always known he was lying when he claid he did not like her.
"You do not need to lie. I know the truth, and I am unbothered," Fauna snapped at him for the first ti.
"Once all of this is over, we can reject each other and move on with our lives."
I did not hear her giggle or speak in that irritating tone she usually used. And honestly, that scared .
I was scared for Haiden.
The way she snapped. The way she held herself. Yes, he had truly pissed her off.
Leysa and I exchanged a look. Then she shifted closer to Haiden, and I moved closer to Fauna.
"Are you not happy with this marriage?" Leysa asked her.
The look on Fauna’s face told the two of them had already discussed it. That was why it surprised when Fauna suddenly backstepped.
"It does not matter. He is a scumbag," she muttered.
I turned to Haiden with a smile tugging at my lips.
"Seems like she knows you so well."
I comnted and Haiden narrowed his eyes at , and I went quiet.
"By the way, how did this thing between you two happen?" he asked.
"I an, is it not strange that you slept with Clentine’s sister and then had the nerve to pursue her as well?"
That was his counterattack.
"Alright, fine. I deserved that," I admitted, gesturing for him to drop it.
Leysa’s mood already seed sour.
"What are we going to do about Clentine and Ian now?" Leysa demanded.
"We cannot just leave them in the north."
Finally, Leysa snapped, dragging the tension back to what truly mattered.
"How about we wait a few days to convince all the alphas?" I began.
"Even that would take ti. In fact, it would still take days just to persuade the others. Before that, you would have to be crowned as alphas ourselves. Only then could you speak to them in etings. It would take too long. It would be too late by then."
Haiden nodded in agreent with Leysa. We did not have much ti. We needed to act almost imdiately.
Through the open bars of the prison, I saw the headmaster return. They did not handcuff him, and he did not resist. He walked into the cell on his own.
When he reached his bench, he put on the coat and the watch he had left behind.
"What did they say?" I asked, rising from my spot and moving toward him.
Haiden stepped forward as well. Leysa and Fauna stayed close behind us.
"I was negotiating with them," the headmaster replied, keeping his gaze on his wristwatch.
"What did they say?" Haiden pressed, wanting to know the outco of the negotiation.
"Well, they have agreed to let stay in the North," the headmaster answered.
My jaw dropped. I glanced at Haiden, silently asking if he had heard that correctly.
"What do you an you will stay there?" I questioned, stepping into his path when he turned as if to leave. "Wouldn’t you be more useful here?"
He faced , clasped his hands behind his back, and tilted his head. His expression carried boredom and exhaustion.
"So what do you suggest?" the headmaster asked. "Should I leave my distressed child alone in the North, not knowing what to do?"
He straightened his spine and studied , as if challenging to offer a better solution.
"Well, there is sothing we can do," Fauna spoke up.
We all turned toward her. It seed she had already discussed it with Leysa, and they had a plan.
"And what is that?" the headmaster asked, leaning forward with sudden enthusiasm.
I do not know why, but it seed he was relying on Fauna’s suggestion. At this point, we would have welcod any solid idea.
"Why do you have to go to the North?" Fauna asked, her breath quickening. "Your concern is that your son should not be left alone while he is overwheld, correct?"
I realized her proposal would be dangerous, especially for her.
Haiden and I exchanged a glance. We already knew what she was about to suggest.
Our silence seed to signal that we supported her.
"Let us go there," Fauna continued. "The four of us will be enough to stand beside him. anwhile, you can do whatever is necessary here to convince people that the council leaders are the real problem."
As soon as she finished, I saw the headmaster’s body twitch. He appeared to be weighing the plan.
"There are still good people here," Fauna added. "Speak to Troy’s mother. Speak to my mother. I am certain they are not like their mates. They will help you."
We all watched the headmaster in silence.
