"I do not like this part of the north," Leysa complained to Troy as we kept moving.
"Okay, this is Sector 13," I said, pointing at the fallen estate. "We have to pass through it."
I stepped into the area, and the others followed.
The Hollow Man had fallen far behind.
"What are we going to face here?" Leysa asked from behind .
I took a deep breath, then answered, "The Dead Drifters."
They looked confused so I decided to help them with an explanation.
"In other words, zombies," I added.
The mont I finished speaking, one of the building doors swung open, and the drifters rushed out with full force.
"I really don’t like this place," Leysa complained as she ran behind us.
"Get into the building on the side, hurry," I shouted.
I reached the building first and pulled the main gate open.
The three of them rushed inside ahead of , and I followed right after.
We slamd the tal fence shut. I had barely secured it when the drifters threw themselves against it.
Ian grabbed from behind and pulled away from the gate.
We looked into their eyes. They were gone.
There was no consciousness left in them.
So of them shoved their hands through the gaps in the fence, trying to reach us, screaming the whole ti.
Leysa began to shake.
"What kind of monsters are these?" she asked.
Troy ran a hand through his hair and pointed at them.
"You two have fought them before?" he asked, looking at Ian and .
Ian shook his head and turned toward .
"I had co into this building earlier to explore the area, but I had only fought one of them. They never moved in groups like this. Back then, soone had locked them all inside. I don’t know how the door opened or if they broke it themselves."
I had just finished speaking when their weight started forcing the tal gate open.
"Everyone inside, now," I ordered. "There will be normal household items in the rooms. So of them can be used as weapons. We need weapons because we’re going to have to fight our way through them. Otherwise, we won’t make it across."
As soon as I finished, we ran deeper inside.
We entered carefully. Noises echoed from upstairs, like sothing was moving around up there too.
We didn’t know whether more drifters had broken free or if they were just slamming their heads against windows and doors.
We began searching the ground floor in pairs. Ian and I knew more about these monsters, so I stayed with Leysa while Ian paired up with Troy.
Leysa and I moved down the hallway, stepping into one room after another, picking up anything useful. Small knives wouldn’t do much.
"Will this work?" Leysa asked, lifting a butcher knife.
"It will, but we’d have to get too close," I replied. "We need sothing we can aim from a distance."
Without hesitation, she snapped the handle off a mop and tied the butcher knife tightly to the end with a strip of cloth.
"That’ll work," I said, giving her a small smile.
She was learning fast. She smiled back at my approval.
I headed toward the bedroom and noticed the closet door slightly open.
I don’t usually go through soone’s closet, but no one was here.
The owners were probably the ones trying to tear us apart outside.
When I opened it, a smile spread across my face.
"Oh, sweet baby, look at you," I murmured as I picked up the gun.
"A gun?" Leysa asked quietly from behind .
I turned and nodded.
"Let’s see what happens."
I grabbed every bullet I could find and stepped back into the hallway.
Ian and Troy were coming toward us from the other side.
Ian held a sword, and Troy carried a bow and arrows.
The house must have belonged to soone who collected old weapons.
"These will help," Ian said, lifting the large sword slightly.
"Did you find anything?" Troy asked.
The mont he noticed the weapon Leysa had made, he took it from her hands.
"Take this instead, the bow and arrows," he said, handing them to her. "You won’t have to get close with this."
"Did you find sothing?" Ian asked .
He was about to offer his sword, but I pulled the gun from my back belt instead.
They all stared for a second.
"Nice," Ian said, giving a thumbs up.
I turned and held the gun out to Leysa.
"This will be better for you."
I took the bow and arrows from her. The bow was my specialty.
We stepped outside together. The monsters had almost broken through the fence.
"Okay, guys. It’s war ti," I said.
Ian imdiately grabbed by the waist, lifted , and placed on the canopy.
I steadied myself and sat down, gripping two arrows.
Troy did the sa with Leysa and helped her up beside .
She held the gun while both of them stayed below. We were going to aim from above.
Then it happened.
Suddenly, the tal gate broke open and the zombies started pouring in.
Their hands stretched forward, their teeth grinding like they couldn’t wait to tear into our flesh.
Ian charged first. He swung his sword and sliced through two zombies, splitting their heads horizontally.
"Aim for the head!" I shouted.
Then I started firing arrows. One down. Two down.
One zombie had almost reached Troy from behind while his weapon was stuck in another zombie’s skull.
My arrow pierced through the first zombie’s head and drove straight into the neck of the one behind it.
Troy turned around and took a deep breath before looking up at . Then he mouthed, "Thank you."
Leysa’s hands were shaking for the first few seconds.
But when she saw a zombie moving toward our legs, she fired.
The first shot missed. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes.
"Leysa, rember. Your father used to take you shooting," I reminded her.
She had been pampered, but her father had still trained her because she was his precious daughter.
That was enough. She opened her eyes and fired again.
