Volu 2, Chapter 27: The Servants’ Idle Chatter
“So much has happened these past two days.”
“Yeah. Though for people like us, I’m afraid there probably isn’t anything in it.”
The opening words were quite ordinary. If Leticia had not been right behind them, she probably would not even have noticed the content of their conversation.
“Didn’t your master say anything to you?”
Both of them were dressed as servants, and both were won. One had a rather pretty face, while the other’s appearance was much more ordinary.
“You’re a personal maid. Naturally, you can hear more things than an ordinary maid like .”
The maid with an average appearance and so freckles on her face complained, “How am I like you? Every day, I can only help out in the back kitchen and weed the courtyard. Just those two things alone are enough to work to death!”
“Haa... Well, that’s true.”
The rather pretty maid sighed. “But being by the master’s side is even more stressful. Think about it. Every move you make might be watched by others, and that’s not even ntioning having to follow along to receive guests. If I made a mistake at a ti like that, Mr. Butler—oh, perhaps the master himself—might make pack my bags on the spot.”
“That’s true...”
Touching her own face, the plain maid sighed. “But it’s still really enviable. Being able to get a little closer to your own master... Ah, if I could get a little closer to my own master, what a happy thing that would be.”
“Honestly, you. My master doesn’t lose to your master at all!”
The pretty maid said, unconvinced, “My master is actually a very good person too. He usually takes good care of servants like us. Unfortunately, these past few days, so guests arrived, so everything beca especially busy. Even the master has grown anxious...”
“Guests?”
Just as the freckled maid looked puzzled, Leticia also quietly perked up her ears.
Finally, she had heard sothing interesting.
“That’s right, that’s right!”
The pretty maid nodded heavily. “We started preparing two or three days ago. We were busy here and there, spinning like tops with no way to stop. Even the servants by the master’s side had to help move things, all for the sake of receiving those guests.”
“Eh... They’re guests that important?”
The freckled maid said in surprise, “Although I did hear a little about it, our steward would never tell people like us anything. That guy, hmph. It’s already good enough if he doesn’t dock our wages. Forget about him telling us anything.”
“I don’t know the details either. It’s just...”
The pretty maid hesitated for a mont, then leaned slightly closer and said, “Earlier, I heard my young lady say that the people who ca have a deep relationship with the Church, and they are also young talents from Borja City.”
Borja City?
Leticia searched through her mories with so confusion and was very satisfied to receive the answer of “I have absolutely no idea what the hell that place is.”
It seed she could only keep eavesdropping.
“Ah, it’s actually that place?!”
The freckled maid’s tone was extrely surprised. “Oh, then no wonder. To think of important people from that place ca.”
All right. Clearly, in those two people’s eyes, Borja City was nothing more than a very simple, easy-to-understand term pointing toward so extraordinary city.
Could it be this country’s capital, the royal capital of the Intis Kingdom?
She would definitely not obtain an answer by thinking hard on her own, so Leticia could only temporarily rember the na and plan to ask soone about it later. Whether it was Stano or Ilo, as long as she asked skillfully, she would definitely gain sothing.
“That’s why.”
The pretty maid nodded. “Even the ti we get up is earlier than before, and there’s more work to do every day, all so that nothing goes wrong.”
“That really isn’t easy...”
The freckled maid sighed. “Ah, this is about where we part ways. I have to go buy things too. Since Mr. Steward gave the order, I can’t exactly refuse.”
“Mm. All right. I also need to go bring sothing back for my master... Ah, my young lady also asked to secretly bring her so sweets from outside.”
The servants from two different families greeted each other lightly, then split up and went their separate ways. Only Leticia, who had been listening to their conversation the entire ti, stopped there for a mont before casually turning into the flow of people, acting as if she were rely a passerby who had happened to walk along the sa route for a while.
“I keep feeling this is so kind of intelligence, but I can’t hear anything important in it.”
Leticia frowned slightly and said in a low voice, “Those Pilgrims aren’t rely passing through here?”
The guests ntioned by the maid were undoubtedly the newly arrived Pilgrims. They had a connection to the Church and possessed special status. Other than those people, Leticia could not think of a second explanation.
But from what she had seen, that little fellow Diego did not seem to have any connection to special status. Why had he also been able to get mixed in among the Pilgrims?
She could not figure it out.
She truly could not figure it out.
“Forget it. For now, I’ll rember this matter and look for a chance to investigate later.”
Right now, she felt that her throat could no longer endure this dry air. Even if she breathed through her blocked nose, the air was like a dry brush, fiercely scraping against her throat.
It was a little unbearable.
So...
...
“Haa... I guess I’m alive again...”
Looking at her own reflection in the stream, Leticia dazedly scooped up a handful of water and patted it onto her face.
That cool stimulus seed as if it would wash all the fog from her mind. However, at most, it only thinned it by a tiny amount and did not have much effect.
Honestly, halfway here, Leticia had felt that she might die of thirst. Fortunately, her will to survive was still quite strong and reliable.
Borrowing the brief clarity brought by the icy stream water, Leticia sat down, propped up her chin, and thought about what she should do next.
...For the mont, she really could not think of anything she could do.
“Hey, Bamboo Pole. You got thrown away like trash just like that?”
Just then, the voice that Leticia found extrely annoying rang out once again. “You promised you’d help get that thing!”
“Can you warn before you speak next ti?”
Leticia sighed helplessly. “Every ti, you suddenly appear, and your tone is always so startled and dramatic. I might actually be scared to death by you one day.”
“Cut the crap!”
Stano shouted, “You didn’t explain things clearly to last night. What exactly is going on now?!”
“What’s going on?”
Leticia shrugged to herself. “As you can see, I made a mistake and got kicked out. For these seven days, I have to fend for myself.”
Although she had indeed been startled, being able to talk with this bastard kid from ti to ti was, for Leticia, one of the few amusents she currently had.
Bah. What amusent? This rotten little brat was always making her angry. Was she so kind of masochist or sothing?
Bah, bah, bah...
