Morning arrived quietly at the Rochefort residence. Winter light filtered through the tall kitchen windows, pale and steady, reflecting off the thin layer of frost that still clung to the garden outside. The lawn remained undisturbed except for the narrow path the staff had cleared earlier that morning.

Inside, the kitchen was warm. The long wooden breakfast table had already been set. Plates, fruit, and a small basket of toast sat between cups of coffee and juice. The quiet dostic rhythm of the house had returned after the previous evening’s discussions.

Leo and Lily occupied the far side of the table. Lily sat with one knee tucked under her chair as she finished a piece of toast, while Leo remained beside her with his tablet resting neatly next to his plate. His attention shifted frequently between the screen and the adults across the table.

Franz and Arianne sat opposite them. Their conversation moved easily through the small practical matters of the morning. Schedules. Calls. A eting Arianne needed to review later that afternoon. Franz’s upcoming filming commitnts. Nothing unusual. Nothing that suggested the quiet tension that had lingered between them the previous night.

Yet beneath the table, Franz’s hand rested lightly over Arianne’s. Their fingers were loosely interlocked. The gesture had begun without comnt when they first sat down, and neither of them had ntioned it since.

Above the table their expressions remained calm. Franz lifted his coffee cup. Arianne reached for a slice of fruit.

Across from them, Leo noticed sothing. He had been studying them for several minutes now, his gaze moving carefully from Franz to Arianne and back again.

Finally he picked up his tablet and began typing. The tapping sound was soft but deliberate.

Lily leaned over imdiately. "What are you writing?"

Leo finished typing and turned the tablet toward her. Observation.

Lily frowned thoughtfully. "What observation?"

Leo typed again. The screen changed. Different.

Lily squinted slightly at the ssage before looking up at Franz and Arianne again. "They’re acting different."

Franz continued drinking his coffee as if he hadn’t heard the comnt. Arianne calmly lifted her glass of water.

Under the table, their hands remained joined.

Leo watched them for another mont before returning his attention to the tablet.

Franz’s phone vibrated quietly against the table. He glanced down at the screen. Daryll.

Franz picked up the phone and stood from his chair. "I’ll take this." He moved toward the kitchen window before answering. "Yes."

Daryll’s voice ca through imdiately. "We’re moving forward."

Franz already knew what that ant.

"The campaign," Daryll continued. "Wendy’s team is finalizing the first set of visual tests. Wardrobe, lighting, framing. We’ll need to schedule you this week."

Franz looked out at the garden while listening. "All right."

"There’s one thing we need to be absolutely clear about," Daryll added. "The mystery woman cannot be identifiable. Not even remotely."

"She won’t be."

"We’ll control cara angles, silhouettes, reflections. No direct profile shots. No face."

Franz glanced briefly toward the kitchen table. Arianne remained seated across from the twins, listening to Lily describe sothing animatedly while Leo typed again.

"She understands," Franz said.

Daryll sighed on the other end of the line. "Good. Because if the internet proves who she is, the entire concept collapses."

"They won’t."

Daryll paused. "Confidence."

"Experience."

Another pause followed before Daryll spoke again. "We’ll send the first briefing within the hour."

"Understood."

Franz ended the call and set the phone back on the counter.

When he returned to the table, Leo was watching him again. The tablet appeared a mont later. Leo had already typed sothing new.

Uncle Franz busy.

Lily read it imdiately.

"Yes." She nodded toward Franz. "He works a lot."

Franz sat back down and reached for his coffee.

Leo typed again. He showed Lily the screen. Need more ti.

Lily’s eyes brightened.

"Oh!" She looked directly at Arianne. "You and Uncle Franz should spend more ti together."

Arianne lifted her coffee calmly. "Should we."

"Yes." Lily nodded with great certainty. "That’s how people fall in love and have babies."

Franz nearly choked on his coffee. He coughed once, quickly reaching for a napkin.

Across the table Arianne remained perfectly composed. She took another quiet sip of her coffee.

Leo watched Franz’s reaction carefully. Then he typed again. Good plan.

Lily nodded proudly. "It’s a very good plan."

Under the table Franz’s fingers tightened slightly around Arianne’s hand. Arianne did not pull away. She simply set her cup down and continued eating breakfast as if nothing unusual had been said.

A few minutes later Lily slid off her chair. "Co on," she said, grabbing Leo’s sleeve. "We need to think."

Leo picked up his tablet without protest. The two of them hurried toward the staircase. Their whispering voices faded quickly as they disappeared to the second floor.

The silence that followed their departure was different from the quiet that had filled the kitchen earlier. It was softer now, less guarded. Sowhere above them, a door opened and closed. Then footsteps—light, quick—crossed the hallway before another door shut.

Franz set his coffee down and watched the empty doorway for a mont.

He leaned back slightly in his chair. "Your niece is developing a very specific strategy."

Arianne looked at him. "She’s four."

"That hasn’t stopped her from planning our future."

Arianne set her coffee cup aside. "She believes she’s helping."

Franz nodded once. "Yes."

A brief silence followed.

Then he added quietly, "Unfortunately, her plan is surprisingly effective."

Arianne studied him for a mont. "Is it."

Franz reached across the space beneath the table again. His fingers closed around hers. "Yes."

She should have pulled her hand back. That would have been the logical response—maintain distance, preserve control. Instead she let her fingers rest where they were, warm against his, and considered the possibility that logic had very little to do with any of this anymore.

From sowhere upstairs Lily’s voice suddenly echoed faintly through the hallway. "We need a bigger plan!"

Leo’s tablet produced a series of quick tapping sounds in response.

Franz glanced toward the ceiling. Then back at Arianne. "They’re not going to stop, are they."

Arianne’s expression remained calm. "No." Her fingers tightened slightly around his. "They’re very persistent."

Franz watched her for a mont. Then he glanced briefly toward the staircase, listening. The house remained quiet.

Satisfied, he leaned slightly closer and pressed a quick kiss to her lips. It was brief enough that the mont almost felt like a secret.

When he straightened, Arianne regarded him calmly, as if nothing unusual had happened.

For a few seconds neither of them moved. The kiss had already ended, but sothing of it remained in the space between them—a quiet residue that made speaking feel unnecessary. Franz’s thumb traced a slow circle against her knuckles beneath the table. Arianne did not stop him.

Outside the window the morning traffic in Montclair had begun moving steadily through the streets.

Inside the kitchen, the quiet dostic mont continued uninterrupted.
