The thick wooden door creaked as it opened.

The girl smiled, and her eyes crinkled like crescent moons, “It’s my great honor to have saved PLA soldiers! I know you all must be heroes from the earthquake relief efforts.”
“How did you know?” Qin Jian was also eager for more news and began to chat with the girl.
“This whole area is within the earthquake zone. When I found you, you were lying on the ground, covered in injuries, obviously from falls. So, I guessed you were here for disaster relief,” the girl explained.
“Is the place we’re staying far from the worst-affected part of the earthquake zone?” Qin Jian asked.
“It’s probably not close,” the girl said, “Are you worried your troops won’t be able to find you?”
“Yes,” Qin Jian sighed.
If they didn’t know he was still alive, who knew how many would be worried about him?

Sharing the news with their families sooner would save them unnecessary worry.
If the commanding officer found out, he would definitely arrange for both of them to be brought back to recover.
“I’m sorry. I’ve never left my little village, and I can’t read or write, so I don’t know how I could send your ssage,” the girl said apologetically.
