Zheng Guofeng slamd the pen in his hand down on the table with a CRACK. He looked up, his face dark, and glared at Li Wanqing. "You have the gall to ntion this? If you hadn’t drugged and left delirious, would I have mistaken you for Wanyi? To think Wanyi adored you so much. Is this how you repay her?"
Li Wanqing suddenly burst out laughing, doubling over. After a mont, she sneered, "Adored? What is adoration? Is it stealing the man I love? Or stealing all of our parents’ favor? Who the hell wants that kind of adoration?"
Zheng Guofeng stared at Li Wanqing incredulously. "You—"
"That’s right. It’s exactly what you’re thinking. You must be feeling pretty pleased with yourself, huh? Two sisters, both in love with the sa man, and both have slept with you. Aren’t you thrilled?"
Zheng Guofeng glared at Li Wanqing, his voice dangerously low. He pointed a finger at her, his hand trembling with suppressed rage. "You’re insane."
Then a horrible thought struck him, and he demanded, "Don’t tell you told your sister about this."
Li Wanqing blinked innocently, a smile spreading across her face. "We’re sisters. We shouldn’t have secrets, of course. She adored so much, she would never bla . Right, Brother Zheng?"
Zheng Guofeng stood frozen for a long mont before collapsing into his chair. His eyes were vacant as he muttered, "No wonder... no wonder..."
Seeing Zheng Guofeng’s stunned expression, Li Wanqing decided not to provoke him any further and got straight to the point.
"I ca here to ask you about that boy at your house, the one nad Xue Xingzhou. Is he really your and Li Wan Yi’s son?"
"You went to my house?"
"What about it? Am I not allowed?"
Zheng Guofeng’s face was a mask of hatred as he stared at Li Wanqing. "You killed your sister, and you still have the gall to show up at my house. You’re not welco there."
Li Wanqing narrowed her eyes, enunciating each word carefully. "I didn’t kill my sister. *We* did. You and ."
Zheng Guofeng snatched sothing off his desk and hurled it at Li Wanqing.
"Get the hell out!"
Li Wanqing simply watched the folder fly toward her, not even flinching.
THWACK! The folder struck her on the forehead before falling to her feet. A trickle of blood appeared at her temple. Li Wanqing reached up and touched it. Seeing the blood on her fingers, she wasn’t the least bit flustered. Instead, she smiled.
"Tsk, tsk. Losing your temper already? A man your age should be more careful. You wouldn’t want to get so angry you burst a blood vessel. I’d be heartbroken," she said sarcastically. "As for your son, I’d advise you to do a little more digging before you claim him. You wouldn’t want to find out in the end that you’ve been cuckolded and are raising another man’s child."
After saying her piece, Li Wanqing bent down, picked up the folder, and walked back to the desk. She placed it in front of him, gave him a final, lingering stare, and then turned and left the office.
The mont Li Wanqing stepped out of the office, her expression shifted. Her face was dark and grim.
The first thing she did when she got ho was make a call to have soone run a complete background check on Xue Xingzhou—everything from his childhood to the present day, including all information on his parents and any siblings.
Only after this was done did she lean back on the sofa, panting as she tried to suppress the rage in her heart.
Hearing the noise, Wang Shumin ca downstairs. She saw that her mother was back and that her expression was frightful.
"Mother, are you all right?"
Li Wanqing opened her eyes, her gaze slowly settling on Wang Shumin. The mont she saw the girl’s face, which bore a slight resemblance to Li Wan Yi, a naless fire ignited in her heart.
A mont later, Wang Shumin was clutching her own cheek, her eyes red-rimd as she stared at her mother in disbelief.
"Mother, what did I do wrong this ti? Why did you hit ?"
Li Wanqing closed her eyes, refusing to look at her. "Go back to your room. I don’t want to see you."
"If you don’t like , why did you even have ? What is it about that you despise so much?" Wang Shumin choked out between sobs.
Li Wanqing had cald down sowhat, but she paid Wang Shumin no mind. She was used to her daughter’s obedience and couldn’t be bothered with her feelings.
Seeing her mother’s indifferent attitude, Wang Shumin ran back to her room in tears and slamd the door shut.
「That evening」
Zheng Guofeng called Xue Xingzhou into the study for a private talk.
"Li Wanqing ca to the house today?"
Xue Xingzhou nodded, looking at him.
Zheng Guofeng warned him earnestly, "No matter what she says to you, don’t believe a word of it. That goes for your sister, too. That woman is insane. She’ll stop at nothing to achieve her goals, and I’m afraid she might try to harm you."
Xue Xingzhou looked at Zheng Guofeng. "I know. It’s just that, her intentions toward you—"
Zheng Guofeng’s eyes darted away before he sighed. "My heart has only ever belonged to your mother. Li Wanqing’s husband works for the Revolutionary Committee, so if you encounter her, just try to avoid her. Don’t confront her head-on."
The corner of Xue Xingzhou’s mouth twitched into a smirk. "Don’t worry. Before long, she’ll likely have bigger problems to deal with than us."
「anwhile」
Considering Ruanruan was already six years old, Xue Yue decided it was ti to enroll her in a nearby preschool.
He Lang and Xue Yue took Ruanruan to visit the school. The environnt seed nice, and Ruanruan herself was willing, so they sent her for a trial run.
He Lang was currently out of work, so his days consisted of taking Ruanruan to and from school and handling the grocery shopping. As for the cooking, it wasn’t that He Lang refused to do it; it was just that they had discovered Daya’s culinary skills were exceptionally good, far better than his own.
So, the task of cooking fell to Daya, who was more than happy to do it. Ever since she had co to Beijing City with her aunt and uncle, she ate well every day and always had new clothes to wear. The little girl had grown much taller, and her face had filled out, making her look much prettier.
Xue Yue once asked her, "Daya, do you miss ho?"
Daya froze for a second before quickly shaking her head. "No. Auntie, please don’t send back. I can do anything."
Xue Yue’s heart lted. She hugged the little girl and patted her back reassuringly. "Auntie was just asking, I’m not sending you away. You’re a good girl. If you want to, you can stay with us forever. Besides, our Daya is so capable. What would we ever do without you?"
Daya stared at Xue Yue blankly, a slow smile spreading across her face. "I do. I love Uncle and Auntie, I love Ruanruan and Shiyi, and I love Uncle Xue and Auntie too."
Xue Yue’s eyes twinkled. "We love Daya, too."
Daya blushed, pursing her lips to hide a smile. The little girl’s personality had opened up considerably.
The decision to bring Daya to Beijing City had been the right one. She was earnest and responsible. Whether it was looking after Shiyi or doing chores, Daya would often have things done before Xue Yue even had a chance to get to them. Shiyi had beco very reliant on her, too, and he could often be heard calling, "Big Sister Daya, Big Sister Daya!"
Sotis, Xue Yue’s heart would ache for the girl, making her resolve to treat her even better.
