Gu Kai Zhi suddenly reached out and pinched Daya’s ear, startling her.
"What are you doing?"
"Your ear is red."
"..."
Gu Kai Zhi watched as Daya’s ear grew redder and redder. He smiled, his eyes crinkling. The light in them twinkled like scattered starlight, full of affection, as he stared straight at her. Under his intense gaze, a blush gradually crept onto Daya’s cheeks.
"You’ve got so nerve," Daya muttered, then lowered her head.
"I can be even more shaless."
As he spoke, he leaned in closer. Daya could clearly feel his breath.
Seeing Gu Kai Zhi draw nearer and nearer, at the critical mont, Daya abruptly turned her head. Gu Kai Zhi froze in place.
"It’s too soon."
Daya turned and walked away quickly.
Gu Kai Zhi’s eyelid twitched. He wasn’t exactly disappointed, just a little frustrated with himself. He felt like he’d beco a different person in front of Daya—impatient, his usual self-control wavering.
This only made him more certain of his feelings. He had fallen for this girl, head over heels. That was why he was so eager to win her over. Though his actions might seem like those of a playboy, his heart was filled with sweetness.
The happiness his teammates always talked about had suddenly taken a tangible form.
Gu Kai Zhi shrugged and hurried after her.
Daya wasn’t angry, just terribly flustered. She placed a hand on her chest, feeling her heart pound violently. It was a strange, new sensation—a little sour, a little sweet.
Gu Kai Zhi caught up. "Want to go check out the departnt store?"
"No."
"Are you mad?"
Daya shook her head. "No. I spend all day in my family’s supermarket. It has everything. Why would I go to a departnt store? Unless there’s sothing you need to buy?"
Gu Kai Zhi smiled. "I don’t, but I want to buy sothing for you. Everyone says you have to spend money on a girl when you’re pursuing her."
Daya pursed her lips. "Who says that? Why should we spend your money? We can buy whatever we want for ourselves."
"An Xin, how are you so different from everyone else?"
"It’s not that I’m different. It’s that you n underestimate won."
Gu Kai Zhi quickly waved his hands. "Not ! I wouldn’t dare underestimate you."
Daya glanced at him and said, "My aunt says n and won are equal. Won are no worse than n. Aside from physical strength, anything a man can do, a woman can do too. But there are things won do that n can’t always handle."
Gu Kai Zhi nodded. "Your aunt is right."
Daya nodded proudly. "Of course. My aunt is the person I admire most. Everything she says is right."
Amused, Gu Kai Zhi asked, "Has your aunt never been wrong?"
Daya shook her head decisively. "Never. My aunt went to university and she’s a leader. She’s never wrong."
Gu Kai Zhi seed to understand Daya’s feelings for He Lang and his wife. To say she saw them as just elders was too superficial.
In Daya’s heart, He Lang and Xue Yue were long past being just her aunt and uncle. They were like parents to her, or perhaps even more than parents—figures she worshipped.
Gu Kai Zhi knew Daya liked hearing stories about his ti in the army, so he picked out a few more interesting anecdotes from his daily life to share.
"Do you want to visit the base?"
This was the second ti Gu Kai Zhi had suggested this to Daya. Unlike the first ti, she wasn’t so surprised. After a mont of thought, she said, "Mm, maybe I can go take a look when I have the chance. But can an outsider like even get in?"
Gu Kai Zhi looked at her and said, "You’re not an outsider. I’ll just say you’re my family, and you can get in."
Daya laughed, seeing how Gu Kai Zhi was always trying to pull her into his camp.
Gu Kai Zhi saw her sudden laughter.
"Did I say sothing wrong?"
"Gu Kai Zhi, I’m starting to think you’re pretty experienced at this. And here you were, claiming this is your first ti chasing a girl."
Gu Kai Zhi’s eyes lit up. "Are you saying I’m doing a decent job?"
"Don’t go patting yourself on the back. My aunt says you can only believe half of what a man says."
Daya was always quoting Xue Yue, and her words left Gu Kai Zhi speechless.
Gu Kai Zhi said, "I can’t speak for other n, but everything I say cos from the heart. Soldiers don’t lie."
Daya chuckled lightly. "Are soldiers not n? All n share the sa flaws."
Gu Kai Zhi said to Daya with righteous conviction, "Comrade An Xin, I give you my solemn promise. Everything I’ve said is true."
Daya glanced left and right. Seeing that no one was paying them any attention, she looked back at Gu Kai Zhi.
"Fine, I believe you. Happy now?"
Gu Kai Zhi imdiately took Daya’s hand. "As long as you believe ."
Daya looked down at their joined hands and tried to shake free. "Let go. There are so many people around. Stop being so handsy. People will laugh at you, a soldier, no less."
Gu Kai Zhi grinned. "I’m not in uniform, so no one can tell. Besides, soldiers need to find wives too, you know."
Daya pulled her hand free. "Now you’re just getting carried away."
Gu Kai Zhi followed behind her, still smiling.
「That afternoon, they just wandered around the area.」
「Evening arrived in the blink of an eye.」
"I should get back."
Gu Kai Zhi held Daya’s hand, ignoring the warning in her eyes. He simply refused to let go.
"Ti flies."
Daya said helplessly, "I really have to go. I have to be ho by eight."
"You have a curfew?"
Daya nodded. "Yeah. My aunt doesn’t like being out at night. She’s afraid so swindler will trick ." As she spoke, she tugged at her hand again.
Gu Kai Zhi said in surprise, "Am I a swindler?"
Daya rolled her eyes. "I don’t know. But anyone who tries to keep from going ho has bad intentions."
Gu Kai Zhi laughed.
Then he pinched Daya’s cheek. She looked at him, astonished. "Hey, stop being so handsy! I haven’t even said yes to you yet."
Gu Kai Zhi let go and nodded. "You’re right. I don’t have an official title yet, so I really shouldn’t be so forward. So, when are you going to say yes? Because when I’m with you, I just can’t help myself. Do you have any ideas on how to tie my hands down?"
Daya stared at Gu Kai Zhi’s large hands, lost in a daze for a mont.
Seeing her zone out again, Gu Kai Zhi couldn’t help but ask, "I’ve noticed you seem to have sothing on your mind. You keep zoning out when you’re with . It’s making feel pretty inadequate, making wonder if I’m not charming enough."
After a few seconds of silence, Daya looked at Gu Kai Zhi.
"What do you like about ?"
Gu Kai Zhi didn’t speak, just looked at Daya.
Daya said, "I don’t have a good family background. I’m all on my own. What is it that you like about ?"
"Liking soone is just liking them. I like you because you’re An Xin. Do there need to be any other conditions?"
Daya just stared intently at Gu Kai Zhi. He leaned in and kissed her on the forehead.
Daya’s eyes flickered.
"Co on, I’ll walk you ho."
When Xue Yue and He Lang saw Daya return early, they were relieved.
They didn’t ask about anything else.
