Xue Yue glared at him. "Get outta here. No way. He Lang, when I said I’d reward you, I ant I’d cook you sothing nice. Don’t push your luck."
He Lang raised an eyebrow. "How about this? I’ll take you out for a nice al, save you the trouble of cooking, and then we’ll go over to Binhe Bay tonight."
’He just won’t give up, will he?’
Xue Yue imdiately tried to get off He Lang’s lap, but he pulled her back into his arms.
Xue Yue pouted. "What are you doing? I still have to work. Stop bothering ."
He Lang patted Xue Yue’s butt. "You little heartless thing. Who do you think I did all this for? Do you have any idea how much trouble I went through this morning just to co see you? I finally managed to make myself look impressive enough, but then my hair got all ssed up on the motorcycle. I had to spend ages fixing it again at the entrance."
Xue Yue looked at He Lang’s shiny, slicked-back hair and couldn’t help but laugh again.
"Don’t tell you brought a comb with you." As she spoke, she reached for He Lang’s pocket and, sure enough, found one.
"Hahaha."
The people outside the door heard Xue Yue’s laughter, exchanged glances, and all felt a bit envious.
"Sister Xue and her husband have such a great relationship," Deng Weiwei said.
Ding Ruzhi nodded in agreent. "This is the first ti I’ve ever heard Xue Yue laugh so heartily."
Having gotten a definite answer from Xue Yue, He Lang left.
At noon in the cafeteria, Xue Yue ran into ng Ye.
"I think I saw your husband downstairs this morning."
Xue Yue said, "He ca to see about sothing."
ng Ye said with a laugh, "I have to say, your husband was so dressed up today I almost didn’t recognize him."
Xue Yue chuckled. "It was a little over the top. n care about their looks too, you know."
ng Ye couldn’t help but laugh out loud, then quickly covered her mouth as people nearby started to look over.
After a mont, ng Ye composed herself and lowered her voice. "Xue Yue, you’re really sothing else. Does your husband know you say things like that about him?"
Xue Yue shrugged. "Who knows?"
ng Ye chuckled.
Xue Yue looked at her and asked, "By the way, how co I haven’t seen you around the office lately?"
ng Ye’s expression stiffened.
Xue Yue noticed her unease.
"Is sothing wrong? I ant to ask you earlier. You don’t look very well."
ng Ye poked at her food tray with her chopsticks, remaining silent.
Xue Yue said, "It’s okay if you don’t want to talk about it."
ng Ye sighed. "There’s nothing to hide. I had an abortion."
"What?"
Xue Yue was stunned.
"No wonder you look so unwell. How far along were you? Was the baby—Wang Hai’s?"
ng Ye nodded. "Two months. I’ve only ever slept with him, so of course the baby was his."
Xue Yue frowned. "Does Wang Hai know you had an abortion?"
ng Ye shook her head. "I didn’t tell him I was pregnant."
"I’ve said before that I’m not having kids."
Xue Yue lowered her voice. "Then how did you..."
ng Ye said, "It was an accident. I’m usually very careful."
’ng Ye was surprised herself. Just that one ti without taking precautions, and she just had to get pregnant.’
’Fate really has a twisted sense of humor.’
"Then who went to the hospital with you?"
ng Ye gave a bitter smile. "Just . I didn’t want anyone to know. Fortunately, with the current family planning policies, I could sign for it myself. Otherwise, I don’t know what I would have done."
Xue Yue felt a pang of sympathy for her.
"You should have co to . I could have at least gone to the hospital with you."
ng Ye looked at Xue Yue and gave a weak twitch of her lips, but ultimately said nothing.
Xue Yue could tell that ng Ye wasn’t taking it as easily as she let on.
’Giving up one’s own child is never easy. But it was ng Ye’s decision, so there was nothing Xue Yue could say.’
That evening, He Lang had everything planned out perfectly. A Western dinner with red wine, after which he would take Xue Yue to Binhe Bay for a romantic night for two.
Unexpectedly, before Xue Yue had even finished work, she got a call from ho saying that Shiyi had been vomiting and had diarrhea ever since he got back from school.
"Did he catch a chill?"
Mr. He said over the phone, "I’m not sure. Just hurry back as soon as you get off work."
"Okay."
After hanging up, Xue Yue glanced at the ti. There were five minutes left until the end of her shift.
She waited, and the mont it was ti to clock out, she rushed off.
Ding Ruzhi had wanted to say a few more words to Xue Yue, but she just saw her hurrying away.
When Xue Yue went outside, she saw He Lang waiting across from the main gate, just as she’d expected.
Xue Yue ran over.
Before He Lang could say anything, she rushed out, "Dad just called. Shiyi’s been vomiting and has diarrhea since he got ho from school. We need to hurry back."
He Lang froze for a second, then quickly straddled the motorcycle. As soon as Xue Yue was on, he sped toward ho.
When they got back, they had just stepped inside when they heard Shiyi crying about a stomachache from the other room, followed by the sound of him suddenly vomiting again.
Mr. He and Ruanruan were frantic with worry.
"Shiyi."
Xue Yue ran over and patted Shiyi’s back, watching as he threw up so greenish liquid.
He Lang took one look and said, "This is bad. We have to take him to the hospital. Now."
"Okay."
Once Shiyi finished vomiting, He Lang swept him up into his arms and headed for the door, with Xue Yue and Mr. He following close behind.
"Dad, you and Ruanruan stay ho. We’ll call you if there’s any news."
Mr. He had no choice but to stop. "Okay. Let know as soon as you hear anything."
"We will."
With that, Xue Yue hurried out the door.
On the way to the hospital, Shiyi threw up again.
Xue Yue was panicking, her eyes fixed on Shiyi’s condition.
As soon as they arrived at the hospital, He Lang ran inside carrying Shiyi.
"Doctor, doctor!"
Shiyi was already starting to lose consciousness.
The ergency doctor took a look and imdiately had He Lang carry the boy into the resuscitation room.
Then, they were ushered out.
Family mbers weren’t allowed in, so Xue Yue and He Lang stood outside the door, staring anxiously at the scene inside.
The doctor ca out again a mont later.
"What did the child eat at ho today?"
Xue Yue replied, "He had porridge, an egg, and a stead bun for breakfast. He ate lunch at school and hasn’t had anything since coming ho."
The doctor’s brow furrowed. "Do you know what he had for lunch at school?"
Xue Yue shook her head. "I don’t know, but he always eats lunch at school and nothing like this has ever happened before."
"Doctor, how is my son?" He Lang asked.
"We suspect food poisoning. The nurses are pumping his stomach now. Afterward, we’ll run tests to determine the exact cause."
"Food poisoning?" Xue Yue and He Lang exchanged a shocked look.
The doctor nodded. "That’s what we suspect for now, but we’ll need to analyze a sample of his vomit to be sure."
"Doctor, doctor—"
Just then, another woman ran in, clutching a child.
Her hair was a ss, her eyes darted frantically to the child in her arms as she cried out for a doctor.
The doctor strode over to her.
"What’s wrong with the child?"
The woman’s voice was thick with tears. "He ca ho from school and has been complaining about his stomach hurting, and he’s been vomiting and has diarrhea! I don’t know what’s wrong!"
Hearing this, both Xue Yue and He Lang stiffened.
