When Shu Yu reached the center of the village, she saw the village chief of Hedeng Village being supported as he walked towards her.
Shu Yu quickly took a few steps forward. The village chief made a gesture to salute, but she steadied him with a hand. "Old Village Chief, there’s no need for such formalities. I’m just here to see Granny Fang."
The Old Village Chief was already quite elderly, but he walked fairly steadily, leaning on a cane, looking in good spirits.
"It’s no trouble at all. It’s rare for Monarch Lu Xiang to visit. Why not co to my house for a cup of tea? I can have soone call for Granny Fang."
"No need, I’ll go myself."
The Old Village Chief nodded, "Alright, I’ll accompany Monarch Lu Xiang."
Shu Yu originally intended to exchange a few polite words, but then thought about how Granny Fang had lived here for thirty years. Not knowing how she was doing, she simply followed the Old Village Chief slowly, taking the opportunity to learn more.
The Old Village Chief was also curious about Shu Yu’s visit, feeling a bit anxious.
After a few steps, he couldn’t help but ask, "Monarch Lu Xiang, what business do you have with Granny Fang? I heard from Yuan Gui that they’ve been working at the county office these days. There shouldn’t be any mistakes, right? Actually, they’re all honest and decent people..."
Shu Yu listened to the Old Village Chief’s rambling, but all along he was defending Granny Fang, which ward her heart. She smiled, "I just have a personal matter to ask Granny Fang about. I know she’s doing well."
The Old Village Chief felt relieved. They hadn’t walked far when soone hurriedly ran towards them.
This person looked about the sa age as Shu Yu, but his face was full of anger. He ran up to the Old Village Chief and said, "Grandpa, that Yuan Gui doesn’t want to recognize Granny Fang as family anymore. He’s changed his mind."
The Old Village Chief was stunned, then started frantically winking at his little grandson, signaling him to stop talking.
The latter only realized Shu Yu was by the Old Village Chief’s side, obscured by the wall, after he had run up. His face changed at once, but he had already said everything he needed to say.
Feeling regretful, the Old Village Chief could only smile at Shu Yu, "This is my little grandson, he’s impulsive. Monarch Lu Xiang, please don’t mind him."
Shu Yu smiled. It was exactly this matter he ntioned that puzzled her.
"What do you an Yuan Gui doesn’t want to recognize Granny Fang as family anymore? What happened?"
The village chief’s grandson stamred, trying to co up with an excuse but worried it wouldn’t suffice.
The Old Village Chief sighed before explaining, "As Monarch Lu Xiang may know, Granny Fang has been on her own for years. Now, she and Yuan Gui get along well. Neither of them have any family left, so soone suggested that they might as well beco family, so they could take care of each other in the future. Both were willing, but just as they were preparing, Granny Fang fell ill and went to the county town, and she just returned yesterday."
Now that she’s back, the matter of recognizing kinship was back on the agenda.
The Old Village Chief’s family got along well with Granny Fang, and as the village chief, she let her descendants handle the joyous occasion of their recognizing kinship.
Why does it sound like sothing went wrong now?
The Old Village Chief looked at his grandson, "Why did Yuan Gui suddenly change his mind? Did sothing happen? Did he say anything?"
The latter huffed angrily, "Who knows what he’s thinking. I think he just found work at the county office, feels like he has prospects, and doesn’t want to take care of Granny Fang anymore. He even found an excuse, saying maybe Granny Fang still has family in the world. Grandpa, listen to what kind of nonsense he’s saying!"
