Chapter 142

The pull did not remain quiet after Ariana recognized it, and that was what made her breath catch. It did not press against her or force her forward, but tightened with direction, settling deeper into her chest until standing still began to feel like resistance instead of control.

Kael felt the change instantly, his hand tightening around her wrist as his body reacted before his thoughts could follow. He pulled her closer without hesitation, his other arm coming around her shoulders to keep her anchored against him.

"Ariana," he said, his voice sharper now, steady but edged with urgency.

"I didn’t move," she replied quickly, though the tension in her voice betrayed her. Her fingers tightened in his shirt as if holding onto him was the only thing keeping her steady.

"You almost did," Kael said.

Vaelor watched them without interruption, and that silence carried more weight than any command. The clearing adjusted around him again, not resisting his presence, but settling into it as though the world itself had accepted him as sothing inevitable.

"You feel it clearly now," Vaelor said.

Kael stepped forward imdiately, placing himself more firmly between Ariana and Vaelor as lightning flickered faintly across his arm. "You don’t get to speak to her," he said, his voice low and controlled.

"I don’t need to," Vaelor replied.

The answer landed with quiet certainty, and Ariana felt the pull inside her shift again. It did not grow stronger in force, but clearer in intent, threading deeper into sothing she could not separate from herself.

Her breath broke.

This ti, her body leaned forward without aning to, her hand slipping slightly from Kael’s chest as her balance shifted toward sothing she could not see. Kael reacted instantly, pulling her back harder, his grip tightening as the storm beneath his skin rose sharply.

"Ariana," he said, his voice rougher now.

"I’m here," she said quickly, though her breathing was no longer steady.

The pull did not stop.

It sharpened.

Ariana gasped as sothing inside her chest shifted, not pain, but a recognition twisted into sothing she could not control. Her fingers dug into Kael’s shirt as her shoulders tensed, her body caught between staying and moving.

"Kael," she said, quieter now.

"I’ve got you," he answered imdiately.

His power surged in response, lightning snapping across the ground beneath them as the air cracked under the pressure. The force pushed outward just enough to break the tension building too close, and for a brief mont, the pull weakened.

Ariana drew in a sharp breath.

Then it returned.

Stronger.

Her body jerked forward again, and this ti Kael did not hold back. The storm broke outward in a controlled burst, the ground splitting beneath them as his grip tightened hard enough to stop her movent completely.

"Stop," Kael said, his voice no longer directed at her.

Vaelor did not move.

"You resist what already belongs to ," he said calmly.

Kael’s gaze hardened.

"She doesn’t belong to you," he replied.

Vaelor’s expression did not change.

"You misunderstand."

The air shifted again, but this ti it did not press against Ariana or attempt to force her forward. Instead, it aligned with her, settling into her breathing, into the rhythm of her body in a way that made everything inside her feel dangerously steady.

Ariana felt it imdiately.

Her shoulders lowered slightly despite herself, her breathing slowing in a way that did not match the chaos around her. Her grip on Kael loosened for a brief second before tightening again as she forced herself to hold on.

Kael felt that change.

His hand moved to her jaw without hesitation, forcing her to look at him as his focus locked onto hers. "Stay with ," he said, sharper now, his control tightening.

"I am," she replied.

But sothing in her eyes shifted.

Vaelor stepped closer again, and this ti the distance between them no longer felt like protection. His presence pressed deeper into the clearing, not as force, but as sothing that already belonged there.

Kael did not move back.

Sothing inside him changed.

The storm did not surge outward this ti, but compressed inward, condensing into sothing heavier and more controlled. The air around him bent slightly, not from release, but from pressure gathering beneath the surface.

Vaelor noticed.

"There it is," he said quietly.

Kael did not answer, but his grip on Ariana tightened as if holding her there was the only thing keeping everything from shifting further. His breathing deepened, rougher now, as sothing beneath his control moved closer to the surface.

Ariana felt it through him.

"Kael," she said.

His eyes flickered, not just with the storm, but with sothing darker, sothing heavier that did not move like lightning. "I’m still here," he said, though this ti it sounded more like a warning than reassurance.

Vaelor stepped closer again, closing the distance until it no longer mattered.

"You were never ant to fight it," he said.

Kael’s jaw tightened.

"I’m not you," he replied.

Vaelor’s gaze shifted briefly to Ariana before returning to him.

"You were ant to bring her," he said.

The words hit.

Kael moved imdiately, pulling Ariana fully against him as his arm locked around her. His power surged again, but it remained controlled, pressing outward just enough to hold the space between them.

"I said no," Kael said.

Ariana felt the pull spike sharply inside her chest, stronger than before, clear enough to make her breath break. Her hand lifted without intention, moving past Kael’s shoulder toward sothing beyond him.

She froze. Kael saw it.

And this ti, sothing inside him snapped.

The air fractured under the force of it, lightning tearing outward as the storm twisted into sothing heavier and more violent. The ground cracked beneath them as his power broke free of its restraint, forcing even the pressure in the clearing to recoil.

Ariana gasped, her focus snapping fully back to him.

"Kael—"

He did not answer. His grip did not loosen.

But his eyes had changed. And then, Vaelor smiled.
