He t her eyes steadily. "Incubi feed on sexual energy, yes. But what sustains us....what truly nourishes rather than simply filling....is sothing more specific. We need a quality of genuine presence from our partners. Not performance. Not effort. Presence."

A beat.

"You are genuinely present," he said. "Every ti. Even when you’re nervous, even when you’re uncertain, you’re actually there. Actually feeling what you feel and thinking what you think. You don’t perform for ." He paused. "You have no idea how extraordinary that is."

Elena was very still.

"Vanessa is beautiful," Raphael said. "Dramatically so. She’s also been performing since the mont she knocked on my door....performing confidence, performing availability, performing a version of herself she believed I would find appealing. It’s not a criticism. It’s simply what she knows how to do." He shook his head. "I can’t feed from performance. It tastes like....." He searched for words. ".....like perfectly plated food with no nutritional content. Beautiful and entirely unsatisfying."

Elena exhaled slowly. "You’re saying I’m not exciting enough to perform."

"I’m saying you’re too honest to bother," Raphael corrected. "And that honesty is what I chose. That is why you’re here and she isn’t."

Elena looked at him for a long mont.

"That’s a very specific thing to notice about a person from a hallway," she said carefully.

"I’ve had two centuries to develop my perception," Raphael said, and his expression ward with sothing that wasn’t quite amusent and wasn’t quite tenderness but was sowhere between them. "I’m occasionally useful."

Elena’s composure cracked, just slightly, and the smile that ca through it was genuine and involuntary.

"And the other question," Raphael said, before she could look away. "Whether you were convenient. Whether I simply wanted soone available."

He reached out and took her hand.....both of his around one of hers, a deliberate, unhurried gesture. His thumb traced the back of her knuckles with the specific kind of attention he gave to things he found valuable.

"Elena. I am an ancient incubus with two centuries of experience and very particular requirents for feeding. I exist in a world where sexual availability is, for , essentially unlimited. If I simply wanted soone convenient...." He paused. ".....I would have taken the first of twenty perfectly willing volunteers and not thought about it again."

He let that settle.

"I sent twenty people away and specifically requested you," he said. "That is not convenience. That is choice. Deliberate, considered, specific choice."

Elena looked at their joined hands.

"And the fact that you’re uncertain about that," Raphael added quietly, "the fact that Vanessa’s appearance shook sothing in you that you didn’t expect to be shakeable.....I want to address that. Not dismiss it."

She looked up at him.

"What we’ve established is....." He paused, finding words with unusual care. ".....it’s more than feeding. I want you to know that. What happens between us when I feed is real for . Not perford. Not chanical. Not simply satisfying a requirent."

His silver eyes were steady and entirely honest. "I value you, Elena. As a person, not as a resource. And I’m aware that the situation we’ve been placed in....." A slight dryness entered his tone. ".....by the Alphas’ creative approach to hospitality.....doesn’t make that easy to believe. But it’s true regardless."

Elena was quiet for a long mont.

Outside, the estate moved through its evening rhythms....footsteps in distant corridors, the faint sounds of the kitchen beginning the dinner service, the low voices of the patrol change happening at the periter.

"Can I ask you sothing?" Elena said.

"Anything."

"The compatibility you ntioned. The energy signature thing." She looked at him carefully. "Is that.....is that sothing that happens often for your kind? Finding that specific compatibility?"

Raphael considered this honestly. "No," he said. "It’s quite rare. Most incubi feed from whoever is willing and compatible enough. The specific resonance I felt from you...." He paused. "....I haven’t experienced that frequently."

Elena processed this. "So when you leave....." She stopped.

"When I leave," Raphael said, and his voice was gentle and entirely honest, "there will be a gap. I won’t pretend otherwise. What we’ve built here is real and it will cost sothing when it ends."

He held her gaze. "But that cost is in the future. And the fact that it will cost sothing is exactly what makes it worth sothing now."

Elena looked at him....this ancient, complicated, devastatingly perceptive man who had walked into her life through the most absurd possible series of circumstances and had sohow, in a matter of days, made her feel more genuinely seen than anyone had in years.

"Okay," she said quietly.

"Okay?" he repeated.

"Okay, I believe you." A small smile. "About the choice. About it being real." She looked at him with clear eyes. "I still think the whole thing is wildly improbable."

"It is," Raphael agreed, the warm-not-quite-amusent returning to his expression. "Profoundly improbable."

"And yet here we are."

"Here we are," he confird.

A comfortable silence settled between them....the kind that doesn’t need filling.

Then Elena looked at the tray she’d brought. "I made dinner. Or.....the kitchen made dinner, but I brought it here. Because you forgot to eat actual food again."

Raphael’s expression shifted into sothing that was, unmistakably, caught. "I wasn’t aware that was a pattern anyone had noticed."

"You train with Eve for hours, then spend the afternoon on Court strategy, and then you co back here and read," Elena said, with the precise accuracy of soone who has been paying attention. "You feed, but you forget that feeding isn’t the sa as eating. You need both."

She stood and began uncovering the tray with practical hands, revealing food that was clearly made with care....the kind of al that took more thought than simply filling a plate.

Raphael watched her arrange things with the unhurried competence of soone who had done this before and would do it again.

"Elena," he said.

"Hm?"

"Thank you. For coming back tonight. For not letting Vanessa’s appearance send you sowhere I couldn’t follow."

Elena looked at him over the tray, sothing quiet and real in her expression. "You said I was genuinely present," she said. "That’s what present people do. They stay."

Raphael looked at her....this quietly extraordinary female who had been handed an impossible situation by three territorial alphas with a scheming agenda and had sohow made sothing genuine out of it through sheer honest grace....and felt sothing settle in him.

Sothing that had been restless for longer than he’d consciously acknowledged.

"Co and sit," Elena said, gesturing to the chair across from hers. "Eat your actual food. You can be ancient and powerful and devastating after dinner."

Despite everything....despite the complicated evening, the territorial drama, the careful conversations and the things said and unsaid....Raphael smiled.

Genuinely. Unreservedly.

"Yes," he said. "All right."

He sat across from her in the amber evening light, and they ate dinner together like two people who had decided, against all reasonable probability, to simply be where they were.
