The words hung in the air like a bomb.

"What?" Maya’s voice ca out strangled.

"Turned," Raphael repeated calmly. "Into a supernatural. There are several species that accept human transformation. Werewolves, obviously. Vampires, though I wouldn’t recomnd that route. Even certain types of fae can adopt humans into their bloodlines." He paused. "It would solve your mortality and capability concerns. Give you centuries instead of decades. Make you truly part of this world instead of just visiting it."

Maya felt like the floor had dropped out from under her. "I... I never thought about that. Is that even possible? Would anyone agree to do it?"

"The pack would turn you in a heartbeat if you asked," Raphael said with certainty. "Damian already considers you pack-adjacent. One formal request and a bonding ceremony and you’d be wolf. End of mortality problem."

"But that would an giving up being human. Completely. Forever."

"Yes. It would." Raphael’s eyes were steady. "Which is why it’s not a decision to make lightly. But it is a decision you should consider if you’re genuinely trying to figure out where you belong."

Maya’s mind was reeling. Becoming a werewolf. Actually joining the pack instead of just being Eve’s human friend who hung around. Having centuries instead of a normal human lifespan. Being able to contribute instead of always being the one who needed protection.

"I don’t know if I’m brave enough for that," she admitted quietly.

"Bravery isn’t the absence of fear. It’s being terrified and doing the thing anyway." Raphael stood, collecting their empty tea cups. "You don’t need to decide tonight. But you do need to stop pretending you can go back to your old life and be satisfied with it. You’ve seen too much. Changed too much. Whatever you choose, it needs to be a step forward, not backward."

He paused in the doorway. "For what it’s worth? I think you’d make an excellent wolf. You’re loyal, protective of the people you love, and you have good instincts. Those are the qualities that matter. The rest can be taught."

Then he was gone, leaving Maya alone with thoughts that felt too big for her skull.

She didn’t sleep for the rest of the night.

When dawn finally broke, Maya found herself in the estate’s library, surrounded by books about supernatural transformation that she’d pulled from the shelves. Most of it was dense academic text that went over her head, but the basic facts were clear:

Werewolf transformation was possible for humans with the right constitution. It required a formal pack bonding ceremony, a bite from an Alpha, and roughly three months of transformation sickness while the body adapted.

The benefits: extended lifespan (centuries), enhanced strength and senses, pack bonds, healing abilities.

The costs: giving up humanity permanently, moon-influenced emotional states, pack hierarchy obligations, potential for violent loss of control during early transformations.

Maya was so absorbed in reading that she didn’t notice Eve enter until her best friend settled onto the couch beside her.

"Heavy reading for seven AM," Eve observed, glancing at the book titles.

Maya closed the book she’d been studying. "Can I ask you sothing?"

"Always."

"Do you ever regret it? Finding out you’re not human? Having your entire life upended by the supernatural world?"

Eve considered the question carefully. "Sotis I miss how simple things used to be. When my biggest worry was exams and whether I’d get the fellowship I wanted. But regret finding out the truth? No. Never. This is who I am. Who I was always ant to be." She paused. "Why do you ask?"

Maya took a breath. "My apartnt lease is up. I need to decide if I’m going back to my human life or... staying here. And Raphael suggested I consider a third option I’d never thought about."

"Which is?"

"Asking to be turned. Becoming a wolf. Actually joining the pack instead of just being your human friend who hangs around."

Eve’s expression shifted through surprise to understanding to concern. "That’s a big decision."

"I know. That’s why I’m researching." Maya gestured at the books. "Trying to understand what I’d be signing up for."

"What do you want to do?"

"I don’t know. Part of thinks it’s insane. I’ve been human for twenty-six years. Giving that up permanently is..." She struggled for words. "Terrifying."

"And the other part?"

Maya t her best friend’s eyes. "The other part thinks it might be the answer I’ve been looking for. I don’t want to go back to my old life. I don’t want to age while you stay young. I don’t want to always be the weak one who needs protection. If I beca wolf, I could actually contribute. Be useful. Be part of this world instead of just visiting it."

Eve was quiet for a long mont. Then: "You’re already useful. Already part of this world. You don’t need to transform to matter, Maya."

"But I’d always be limited. Always human while everyone around is sothing more." Maya’s throat felt tight. "I don’t want to be left behind."

"You wouldn’t be...."

"Yes, I would. Eventually." Maya forced herself to say the thing she’d been avoiding. "You’re going to live for centuries. You’re Queen of the Seraphim Court. Your world is magic and politics and power I can barely comprehend. And I’m just... human. Normal. Temporary." She blinked back tears. "I don’t want to be temporary, Eve. I want to be part of your life for as long as you’ll have . And as a human, that’s maybe fifty more years if I’m lucky. As a wolf, it could be centuries."

Eve pulled her into a fierce hug. "If you want to be turned, if that’s genuinely what you want for yourself, not just to keep up with .....then I support you completely. The pack would be lucky to have you. But Maya, you need to be sure. This isn’t sothing you can undo."

"I know." Maya pulled back, wiping her eyes. "That’s why I’m researching. Trying to understand all the implications before I make a decision."

"Smart." Eve squeezed her hand. "Whatever you decide, I’m here. Always."
