Chapter 343: Mapping the Shadows

The door clicked shut behind Sophia, the sound a small punctuation that separated the outside world from the quiet tension of Orion’s ho. She leaned against it for a heartbeat, letting the solid wood reassure her—a simple barrier that ant she was finally inside, finally away from the chill of the wind and the lingering echoes of the shrine.

Orion moved deliberately toward his desk. The room slled faintly of both of them. Due to how much she stayed in his ho, she wasn’t surprised. Orion’s ho even felt more like ho than hers did.

Orion handed her a book, heavy and plain, its cover unassuming but solid in her hands. She opened it, anticipation mixing with unease, and blinked at the blank pages. She had no idea why he would even give her a book.

"It’s empty," she said, voice barely above a whisper.

Orion’s lips curved into a half-smile. "Yes, I know that."

"And?" she asked.

Orion didn’t answer. Instead, he beckoned her to the table, pulling out a chair across from him. She hesitated for a mont, still clutching the book, but then obeyed, setting it down in front of her. Orion settled into his own chair, the quiet between them charged with unspoken questions.

"What are we doing?" she asked finally, her voice trembling just enough to betray the curiosity that threaded through her fear.

Orion leaned back slightly, fingers tapping the edge of the desk. "Before—or maybe it was during, I have no idea," he said with a shrug. "But anyways, while that happened to you at the shrine today..." His gaze flicked to her briefly. "...I had a conversation—or rather, an argunt—with Noctis."

She nodded, rembering that Orion had told her about Noctis before, his wolf.

"What did he say?" she asked, intrigued despite herself.

Orion’s eyes darkened as he recalled the conversation. "He... insinuated that I’ve been deliberately dense. That I’ve been avoiding things that actually matter. Questions that need answers, but I’ve been choosing not to ask them. To look for them. To face them."

Sophia tilted her head slightly, trying to process that. "And?"

He gave her a small, knowing smirk, the kind that made her heart both warm and uneasy. "What you just told about the eyes... the ones staring at you in the shrine... it reminded of what he said. And, well..." He paused, eyes glittering with a hint of mischief. "Maybe you and Noctis are in tune after all."

Sophia gave him a small smile. "Imagine being around two people who can speak sense into you."

Orion huffed a laugh.

Sophia smiled. "You know, I... I haven’t even been formally introduced to him yet."

"You will be," Orion said with certainty, tapping the side of his book. "Noctis is mad that he has not had the pleasure of eting you formally, but I’ll make sure you guys et soon."

She nodded at that.

Orion picked up a quill, dipping it into the ink with a careful, practiced motion. Sophia watched, curiosity pushing the lingering unease in her chest aside for just a mont. The tip of the quill hovered above the page and then began to move.

The first words he wrote were simple, yet heavy: Mysterious Woman.

Sophia leaned closer, peering at the page. "Mysterious Woman... is that supposed to be ?" she asked, half-teasing.

Orion’s lips quirked in a small smile. "You’d love that title, wouldn’t you?"

Sophia gave him a small smile in return, a flicker of warmth breaking through the tension.

But Orion’s expression sobered quickly. "No," he said. "While you are mysterious, because of your missing mories... the Mysterious Woman I’m writing about isn’t you."

Her brow furrowed. "Not ? I find it unamusing that you are talking about another woman in my presence."

Orion’s lips twitched, seeing Sophia getting back to her normally sharp-tongued self. The fact that she had been quiet and besides herself signified that whatever she had gone through had shaken her.

Orion smiled at her. "Don’t get jealous, shorty. I don’t have feelings for her—only you," he told her with a wink, then continued, all humor lost. "The day I found you, there was a woman. I had seen her before when I first got Noctis... but that day, she led to you." He paused, letting the weight of his words settle between them.

Sophia’s eyes widened. "You didn’t tell that."

Orion shrugged lightly. "It didn’t matter at the ti. Honestly... I had forgotten the interaction as well. Everything else was more imdiate."

She nodded slowly, her mind whirring. "Do you think... everything might be linked to her?" she asked, voice cautious.

"I don’t know," Orion admitted. "But we’ll find out. All of it."

He returned the quill to the ink and then wrote another word in bold, deliberate letters: Black Magic.

Sophia didn’t argue or question it. The mory of Orion, Lysander, and Marta telling her about the marks found on her body—marks that indicated black magic—ca rushing back. She rembered the unease in their eyes, the certainty in their voices. The magic hadn’t taken hold of her, but it pointed toward soone trying.

She glanced down at her own book. The pages were blank, pristine, waiting. She decided it would be better to use a single book, to keep everything consolidated, everything in one place that might help her make sense of the chaos she had been living. She took the quill from Orion, her fingers curling around it tightly, and began to write.

The first entry she made was Missing mories.

Orion nodded slightly, a silent acknowledgnt of the weight that phrase carried.

She paused briefly, quill hovering, and then wrote: Wolf Connection ??

Orion’s gaze softened. He didn’t need her to explain further; he knew exactly what she ant. Her wolf, the connection they had never fully established, and whether she could ever reconnect with it. The question marks, like small flags, marked the uncertainty, the fear, and the hope all at once.

She dipped the quill again and wrote the next word: Dreams.
