As Bo Yan followed inside, the entire theatre was as quiet as ever, with only a spotlight sweeping across the stage. Under the spotlight, a figure was walking in position, reciting lines.
It wasn’t the rambling of a split personality; Bo Yan had been rehearsing and knew that Xia Siyu was performing the lines from the play.
This play is sowhat like a one-act play, with the entire plot concluded in a single scene. It rarely divides scenes and hardly changes the setting.
In fact, this play is not exactly an original creation by the screenwriters. It is adapted from a scene in Cao Yu’s "Sunrise" and has evolved into sothing new. "Sunrise" depicts Chen Bailu, a socialite in the extravagant, money-driven urban life of China, who struggles under the pressure of money and society, mingling among wealthy businessn. It is not until her forr lover arrives, and after the tragic death of the little girl she adopted, that she experiences extre emotional turmoil. At last, when the banker she relies on goes bankrupt, and she finds herself with no way out due to debts, she chooses to end her life before sunrise.
This play selects the night before Chen Bailu’s suicide, when her adopted little girl dies tragically, and her forr lover arrives. It can be said that Xia Siyu is the absolute soul of this play; if she can carry it, the drama is more than halfway to success.
Theatre is different from film; one must grasp the rhythm and volu oneself. Xia Siyu is practicing theatre, as well as physical movent, Peking Opera, and studying literature and art. Yet, when she first stepped on stage, she couldn’t control the rhythm, and her movents were constrained.
With her gradual rehearsals, she has managed to control the rhythm, allowing her movents to flow freely, and her recitation has developed intonation and cadence. After more than three months of effort, Bo Yan watched from the side; she seed to have turned into a sponge, swiftly absorbing all the nutrients she could.
It was very good, but sothing was still missing.
But today is different.
Bo Yan was watching from the side as Xia Siyu walked through the storyline on stage. Her transitions, her sitting and standing, her actions, her every mont seed to infuse the character she portrayed with a soul.
Chen Bailu is a socialite trapped in the bustling ten-mile foreign market; she cos from an old family, has studied in new-style schools, experienced a love of kindred spirits, and is lost amidst the extravagance. Her soul hopes to wash away the stale habits, but she can’t help descending into decadence.
What binds her hands and feet are money, power, and the old society. She is clear at night, suppressed during the day. So she is tornted, empty, and deeply in debt, leading to her final suicide.
Although Xia Siyu’s situation is different, she feels the constraint of public opinion, rumors spread in a mont while refuting them takes a long run.
She is foolish; everyone else knows that only by shedding the pressure can they go farther. Not only does she not let go of the pressure, but she also shoulders Chen Fan’s pressure, moving forward heavily burdened, pressed to the point where she can’t breathe.
Those around her want to watch her make a fool of herself, handing her admission tickets but not allowing her to enter. The best actor or actress monts are all scenes opposite her, while she can only watch others raise the trophy.
Step by step, is it very difficult? But she just doesn’t want to admit defeat!
She is her own master, and no one will make her bend her spine, nor will they make her cry!
As the plot progresses, Chen Bailu takes the poison before sunrise and lies peacefully before daylight.
However, at the end of the play, Xia Siyu stood up.
