Lucas Robertson was familiar with the route and an excellent driver, so their journey was overall smooth and safe.
By daybreak, the three of them finally arrived at a warehouse not far from the Border Inspection Station in the heavy rain. Sienna Johnson’s anxious heart finally settled.
Lucas had said that once they entered Cagalanga, they would be more than halfway to safety.
"We’re here," Lucas told Sienna.
"Lucas, are you sure there will be no problems?" Sienna asked worriedly.
"Don’t worry, I’ve got everything arranged."
Lucas drove the car into a warehouse where another off-road vehicle was located. They quickly switched vehicles, and Kiki took the opportunity to change into clean clothes as her current appearance was too conspicuous.
Kiki moved the blanket from the old car to the new one and then helped Sienna get out.
"Be careful."
"Mm."
Sienna, pale and wrapped in a black coat, moved to the new vehicle. After sitting down, her hands remained protectively on her lower abdon.
When they set out, Sienna, worried about disturbing her pregnancy, had specifically brought so dicine with her. She drank so water from her thermos and swallowed a few pills ant to stabilize her pregnancy; her stomach finally felt a bit better.
"Baby, be good. We’re almost ho," Sienna gently stroked her belly, talking to the baby inside.
The baby inside, soothed by its mother’s touch, quieted down considerably. Sienna sighed in relief.
She recalled how, back in Dostic, pregnant won were treated like national treasures, with the entire family revolving around them. How unlike the hardships she was enduring!
She was having a child out of wedlock; she couldn’t even imagine what awful things the Johnson Family would say if they found out.
However, she wasn’t afraid!
"Do you want to eat sothing?" Lucas handed Sienna a piece of bread. Sienna hesitated for a mont before replying, "No, no need, thank you!"
She managed a faint smile, pulled her black coat tighter around herself, and lay down on the seat again.
Still feeling unwell, she snuggled deeper into the coat.
The coat was Adrian Desmond’s and still carried his scent. When she left, Sienna had, on a whim, taken it.
The familiar scent soon enveloped her, and her stomach didn’t seem to hurt as much anymore.
Lucas raised an eyebrow, withdrew his hand, and finished the bread himself in a few quick bites. He took off his own jacket, draped it over the back of the car seat, and then sped towards the border checkpoint.
「Five months later,」
Soilliers was experiencing another heavy snowfall. The snow outside was knee-deep. Even Sienna, who was from the north, had never seen snow this heavy.
Kiki, who ca from the equator and had never seen snow, was bundled up like a ball, shivering beside the stove despite the fire.
"How can it be so cold?" Kiki’s teeth chattered as she spoke.
"..."
"Mai, is your ho also this cold?"
"No, it’s much warr there. In winter, the coldest it gets is only around minus ten degrees Celsius." Whereas here, the coldest temperatures could reach minus thirty to forty degrees Celsius.
"Thank goodness. If it were this cold there too, I reckon I’d freeze to death."
"Weren’t you the one pestering to see snow? Now that you’ve seen it, you’re scared of the cold again."
"I didn’t expect it to be this cold." Kiki sneezed and quickly moved away, worried her cold might spread to Sienna.
Sienna looked at her belly, swollen high like a small mountain, and sighed. She was already past her due date; why hadn’t the baby co yet?
This was a hunter’s village in Soilliers. There was no hospital, only a single doctor who treated all sorts of ailnts. It wasn’t that she was exceptionally skilled, but rather that the village was so small there were no other doctors.
The doctor’s surna was Luo, and she was known as Dr. Robertson. From Orienta, she had reportedly been a dical volunteer who ca to the village to treat one of the n. Later, she fell in love with him and stayed permanently.
What a romantic story, she mused.
Sienna thought of herself and Adrian. She too had loved Adrian, and had once wanted to stay with him. But Adrian hadn’t wanted to spend his life with her, so she had left.
Lucas ca in from outside, snow on his eyebrows. Sienna asked, "Is it snowing again?"
"Mm."
Lucas had gone outside to clear the accumulated snow from the roof. If not cleared promptly, the roof could collapse under its weight.
They had originally planned to stay in Soilliers for a month, but it had been three months already. Sienna was close to giving birth and dared not move around much. They could only wait until after she delivered the baby and the weather ward up before leaving.
"More snow?" Kiki felt like she was about to freeze into a block of ice. "I’m so cold, I’ll freeze to death."
Lucas glanced at the woman bundled up like a ball. She was indoors, and the stove was burning hotly, yet she was still cold like this. If she went outside... Hmm, Lucas reckoned Kiki really would freeze into an ice block.
"You’ll warm up if you move more. Get up and cook," Lucas ordered.
"Why do I have to do it?"
"Because you’re a woman, and you’re not the pregnant one! If you were pregnant, I wouldn’t make you do it either!"
Kiki bristled. "I’m not even married! How can I be pregnant? Get lost!"
Sienna, having long grown accustod to their daily squabbles, said, "Hey, can you two go argue in another room? I’m pregnant. Your quarreling is a terrible influence on my baby’s prenatal developnt."
"Sweetheart baby, your Godmother isn’t angry with you; I’m angry with that annoying man." Kiki’s voice instantly softened by several degrees.
"Co on, cook!" Lucas grabbed the collar of Kiki, who was bundled up like a ball, and dragged her out as if hauling a large bundle.
"I won’t cook for you!"
"Then don’t eat the rabbit I hunted!"
"Fine!" This is a good chance to lose so weight, she thought. People here ate at for all three als a day, with practically no vegetables. Her own belly had gotten pudgy; anyone who didn’t know better might think she was pregnant too.
Kiki felt like crying.
She wanted vegetables! She wanted fruit! She didn’t want any more at!
"The clothes you’re wearing are also from the furs of animals I hunted. Take them off!"
"Are you trying to be a pervert?"
Lucas looked Kiki up and down, his face full of disdain and deep skepticism about her supposed beauty. "You? Even if you stripped naked and lay down in front of , I wouldn’t get ’hard’."
Kiki, after all, was a young woman with no experience in romance. Being "teased" this way by a man made her face instantly flush crimson, like a bristling hedgehog.
"You...you...you..."
"It’s not so cold that you’ve forgotten how to speak, is it?"
Kiki pushed him away and went to the kitchen to prepare dinner.
Listening to the two "bicker," Sienna couldn’t help but smile. She touched her stomach and said to the baby inside, "What do you think, are those two up to sothing? You know how they say so couples bicker because they like each other? The way I see it, they look more and more like that."
