Lucas Robertson sat upright, his back straight and expressionless. He didn’t take the initiative to speak; he was always good at remaining calm.
"There’s been an issue in my company, and I want you to help investigate it," Sienna Johnson said.
This was the first ti the two of them had spoken privately since Lucas had taken Kiki away and then returned. Sienna had been furious about his actions, so she had been giving him the cold shoulder.
"Kiki is pregnant now; I just want to be by her side. As for other matters, I can’t manage them at the mont," Lucas refused.
Sienna raised an eyebrow at him. "Are you planning not to work for anymore?"
"I’m very sorry, but right now, the most important things to are Kiki and our child."
"Well, do you know what’s most important to Kiki?"
It’s Curly, it’s Sienna... but it will never be , Lucas thought, a pang of lancholy filling his heart as he pursed his lips tightly and remained silent.
"Did you really send Mina back to Abyanabad?" Sienna suddenly asked.
"Yes!"
"Do you still have contact with her?"
"Basically, no contact at all."
Mina had actually been trying constantly to get in touch with him, but Lucas had refused. He had also canceled Mina’s overseas passport, so she had no way of leaving Abyanabad.
"Have you really forgotten your fiancee?"
Lucas looked at Sienna. He knew what she wanted to ask. "I can’t forget."
Sienna said angrily, "If you can’t forget, why are you ddling with Kiki?"
Lucas was clearly very tense, his hands clenched into fists on his lap. He wasn’t a talkative person, especially about such delicate and private matters, and he didn’t know what to say.
But I want to confide, he thought desperately. I want to tell soone that I truly love Kiki.
"The Lucas of the past loved Nina Carrington; the Lucas of today loves Kiki!"
"If Nina were still alive, would you stop loving Kiki?" Sienna asked.
Lucas looked at Sienna. She’s making a fuss over nothing, his gaze seed to convey. He then said, "She’s dead. You saw it yourself at Maxwell Bradford’s mansion—how could she possibly co back to life?"
"What if? What if your fiancee were still alive?"
I just don’t understand won’s logic, Lucas thought. Why make assumptions about things that are utterly impossible?
"Nina is dead; I personally watched her cremation and saw her turn into a pile of ashes. She cannot be alive. Your hypothetical is aningless!"
"It is aningful! Only when you’ve answered this question properly can I determine how deep your feelings for Kiki truly are.
"Is it because Nina died that you chose Kiki as a fallback? Or is it because Kiki is such a wonderful person that you couldn’t help falling in love with her? Would your feelings for Kiki remain unchanged even if your fiancee were to co back to life?"
"I love Kiki now, and she’s carrying my child... If... I an, if Nina were sohow to co back to life, I would still choose to be with Kiki. Nina..."
He must have really loved Nina, Sienna mused, observing how Lucas’s conversation always faltered whenever her na was ntioned. She felt a twinge of sympathy for Kiki. At least Adrian, despite having a fiancee, doesn’t love lanie Carpenter. He’s only indulgent towards her because he feels he owes her a favor.
"...Just as I can start a new life, if Nina were still alive, she too would have a new life, a man who loves her, children that belong to her..." Lucas said slowly.
"If I say I’m willing to help you win Kiki over, will you work for for the rest of your life?"
Lucas narrowed his eyes slightly and asked cautiously, "What do you intend to do to Kiki?"
Sienna laughed. "Are you worried about her? You’re right to be. Kiki is such a silly woman; even if soone sold her, she’d still help them count the money."
Lucas was unhappy hearing Kiki spoken of like that, even by Sienna. "She’s just pure-hearted, that’s all."
"..."
"There’s nothing wrong with being pure-hearted. There are too many cunning people in this world; pure-hearted people are becoming increasingly rare."
Lucas’s tone was filled with such ardent defense of Kiki that the anger in Sienna’s heart finally began to subside. All I want is for Kiki to be happy, anyway, she reflected.
"So, how do you plan to pursue Kiki?"
Lucas furrowed his eyebrows, looking troubled. It was apparent he was at a loss with the pure-hearted yet stubborn Kiki.
"Kiki does listen to ..."
Lucas looked at Sienna, an internal battle clear in his eyes. Eventually, he yielded. We already have a child together, he reasoned with himself. Of course, I want to build a good life with Kiki.
"Kiki can’t be separated from you and Curly. It’s no big deal for to work for you for the rest of my life. How do you plan to make Kiki accept ?"
"I have my ways! But, Lucas, I hope you rember what you just said! Even if your forr fiancee cos back to life, Kiki must still be the one you love most. If you have to choose between them, you can only choose Kiki!"
"..."
"If one day you do anything to wrong Kiki, I’ll be the first one not to spare you!" Sienna looked at Lucas, her face serious as she issued her warning.
I know she’s doing this for Kiki’s sake, Lucas acknowledged internally, so he wasn’t angry. He earnestly promised, "I will treat Kiki well!"
"Leave Kiki’s matter to . Go investigate those two people who caused trouble at Eastminster Pharmaceutical Factory today. Find out if they’re just ordinary scamrs or if soone is behind them. Also, investigate a person nad Milo Leland for !"
"Yes!"
"You can go now."
Lucas didn’t leave. "How do you plan to help ? Kiki doesn’t even want to talk to right now."
Sienna watched Lucas’s deflated expression with schadenfreude, feeling imnsely better. "Serves you right!"
"Kiki is pregnant right now; her being angry all the ti isn’t good for the baby... I hope you can help , at least don’t let her be angry every day."
Lucas sought Sienna’s help; Kiki was naive but incredibly stubborn, and he had thoroughly offended her.
"I understand. Call Kiki in."
"Alright."
After Lucas left, Sienna remained, pondering. How should I talk to Kiki? They already have a child together; this ongoing cold war isn’t a solution.
"Sienna, I made fruit salad. Try so..." Kiki ca in carrying a bowl of fruit salad. Sienna’s gaze fell on her stomach.
"How far along are you?"
Kiki’s expression grew somber. "Five weeks."
"Your baby is four weeks younger than mine. We might even end up giving birth around the sa ti."
Kiki gently caressed her abdon, her expression complicated. Sienna watched quietly, not saying a word.
"There’s so much here; I can’t finish it all. Let’s eat together," Sienna invited.
"Alright."
Sienna’s thoughts churned. How do I start this? I need to help Kiki untie this knot in her heart.
