Yan Xixi, of course, was oblivious to his seething anger and consuming jealousy. When he didn’t reply for a while, she asked again, "What are you doing?"

His phone lay on the carpet, and Wan Donglin made no move to pick it up.

"Hey, why aren’t you speaking?"

"Hey, Foot Fiddler, are you picking your feet again?"

The ssaging app notifications kept coming. He picked up his phone, and the sight of the nickna she’d sent—"Foot Fiddler"—made him both exasperated and amused.

"Hey, what’s your problem? I hate it when people suddenly ignore ."

"Foot Fiddler, what on earth is wrong with you? If you don’t answer, I’m going to block you."

"I’m serious, I’m going to block you and never talk to you again..."

She was very irritable that night, constantly wanting to pick a fight with soone. But what’s more aggravating in life than trying to pick a fight with soone who simply won’t engage? That damned Foot Fiddler.

"Hey, if you don’t talk, I’m not sending you those gloves."

He finally couldn’t hold back any longer. "Miss, why are you pestering ? Don’t you realize I genuinely don’t want to talk to you? It’s so annoying!"

"Who’s pestering you? That’s ridiculous."

"You are. I’m already ignoring you, so why do you keep ssaging ?"

"Do I need a reply every ti I ssage you? Can’t you just turn off your phone? Or uninstall the ssaging app?"

Good grief, she was actually twisting logic like that!

"On what grounds are you ignoring ?"

"I’m in a bad mood, can’t I be?"

"Why are you in a bad mood?"

"..."

She sent a grinning emoji. "Tell sothing you’re unhappy about so I can be happy for a bit."

He couldn’t help but chuckle.

"By the way, I have so good news to tell you."

"What good news?"

"Maybe I’ll send you a wedding invitation when I get married."

Wan Donglin laughed, exasperated. If she were to marry Huang Xiaojue and he actually attended, he wouldn’t be the one shocked—she’d probably be scared out of her wits.

"Miss, a person should be more sincere! I asked you to commit to multiple tis, and you refused. Yet now you’re saying you’ll send a wedding invitation? And you expect a big red envelope from ?"

Not to be outdone, she retorted, "I’m inviting you because I consider you a friend."

He readily agreed, "Alright, when I get your invitation, I’ll definitely give you a super big red envelope."

"How much will you put in it?"

"250."

Yan Xixi burst out laughing.

"Miss, when’s your wedding date?"

She suddenly froze.

Lately, she had been incredibly busy, working during the day and rushing about for the new shop in the evenings and on weekends. She hadn’t given her wedding a single thought. Besides, Huang Xiaojue’s mother had made her opposition to their marriage perfectly clear. Although they never ntioned it, Xixi knew: the Huang Family had put all wedding preparations on hold—the banquet, the invitations, and all other miscellaneous matters. They used the excuse that they had ti to handle it, but in reality, it was a veiled way of preventing Huang Xiaojue from getting involved. Their plan was to delay things day by day, until the wedding couldn’t happen at all.

This included claims that banquet halls were hard to book. They also forbade them from sending invitations to relatives and friends on their own. After all, how could they send invitations when the banquet itself wasn’t even booked?

Not to ntion, Huang Xiaojue’s mother had suddenly changed the date for registering the marriage. Perhaps in her eyes, any day I married her son was an utterly inauspicious day.

What had once been set in stone had unknowingly beco as illusory as flowers in a mirror or the moon in water.

Only then did a profound chill seep into her. Love is a matter between two people, but marriage truly isn’t.

Unless Huang Xiaojue and I just got a marriage certificate and had a no-frills wedding, there was simply no way for this marriage to proceed.
