Just then, the phone rang.
Upon seeing the look on her mother’s face, Wan Dongi fell silent instantly. Liu Daqing stood up, walked to the window, and spoke in a courteous tone, "Old Zhou..."
"I heard you were hospitalized. I’m concerned about your health. Is everything okay?"
"Just a recurrence of an old ailnt. I’m alright. It’s just that my respiratory system has so issues..."
"The smog has been bad lately; it might be really uncomfortable for you..." Old Zhou said casually. "You haven’t been back to stay for this long in several years, have you?"
Liu Daqing forced a bitter smile. "I had to deal with so miscellaneous matters, but they should be resolved before long..."
The two n chatted idly for a while before hanging up.
Liu Daqing leaned against the window, his expression very grave.
Finally, Wan Dongi asked in a low voice, "What did Old Zhou say?"
"He just asked about my health."
"Is that all?"
"At this crucial mont, what do you think he would say? When Old Zhou does things, he always covers his tracks. But he did ask about Donglin’s situation..."
Wan Dongi’s brows also furrowed.
Clearly, Old Zhou had ulterior motives for this call. With Liu Daqing hospitalized, he was well-inford and must have known that Yan Xixi had gone to the hospital with Donglin. So, was this call a warning? A reminder? Or was he simply pretending nothing had happened?
"Sigh, Donglin lied to break off the engagent. Anyone would be upset by that, let alone Old Zhou."
"Mom, with Donglin being so high-profile, when Xixi starts college, Old Zhou’s family will definitely know, right? If they do find out, won’t this completely destroy relations with our family?"
A marriage proposal denied, resentnt had taken root.
The reason they hadn’t completely fallen out yet was that they still had conflicting interests, maintaining the last shred of their dignity. Yet, if Xixi’s relationship beca public, and she was openly sponsored to attend Harvard, wouldn’t that be a public slap in the face for Old Zhou?
"You know Old Zhou. When you are on his side, he might provide you with great benefits. But if you aren’t, he is set on bringing you down."
"Huang Xiaojue joining his camp probably fits into this sche."
"Be careful in the future. Don’t ntion this in front of Xixi."
"I know. Don’t worry, Mom."
Liu Daqing frowned deeply.
Right now, the plan was to delay, to take it one day at a ti. Unfortunately, the delay couldn’t last much longer. If Xixi did well, it would soon be settled.
Leaving the club, since it was just one street away, Wan Donglin chose to walk instead of driving.
The cool autumn breeze and the relatively fresh air of the tree-lined avenue were refreshing. After he had taken a few steps, his phone screen lit up. It was a joke from Yan Xixi:
’A husband accompanied his pregnant wife to the hospital for an ultrasound. After they ca out, the husband was looking at the report when the doctor said, "This baby isn’t yours." The wife next to him turned green and asked the doctor, trembling, "Can you even tell that?!" The husband slapped her and said, "Honey, I know I was wrong." Then the doctor picked up another report, handed it to the husband, and said, "See, this one is yours..."’
Wan Donglin burst out laughing. "Miss, instead of studying, you’re slacking off again?"
"Boorish man, what are you up to?"
"I’m taking care of so things. I’ll be back in an hour for dinner, so wait patiently for ..."
He raised his head suddenly and saw a red sports car speeding crazily toward him. He instinctively tried to dodge, but the car was moving so fast he couldn’t evade it. His phone flew out of his hand...
