Wan Donglin stepped back.
Her eyes were burning.
"Yan Xixi..."
He reached out to support her, but she fiercely pushed him away, fire almost spurting from her eyes. "Fine, let’s go! To the hospital, right now! I know, one call from you and a doctor will rush over to do the surgery. Let’s go imdiately. The sooner this is over, the better. Did you think I didn’t want to end this sooner? I wish I could get rid of it right now. I never wanted any children!"
She rushed to the door to put on her shoes. He reached out and pulled her back. Her body went limp, and she collapsed into his arms, tears streaming down like rain.
"You fool!"
She tried to struggle, but she had lost all her strength. She was like a bird with broken wings, robbed of its ability to fly. Yet his hands were like iron bands, holding her so tightly.
He could clearly feel her trembling all over. Perhaps it was due to her loss of appetite these past few days. She looked as thin as a sheet of paper.
"Xixi, you need to eat sothing first."
She wasn’t hungry; she didn’t want to eat anything. However, he had already instructed soone to prepare a light midnight snack: light shredded chicken congee, a few appetizing side dishes, and several steaming hot pastries.
"Xixi, co on, eat a little."
She listlessly held the bowl of shredded chicken congee, not taking a bite.
He was surprisingly gentle. "Eat a little so you’ll have so strength. Be good now; eating will help you rest well. Otherwise, if you’re hungry all night, you’ll feel even worse."
She finished a bowl of shredded chicken congee and put down her spoon. He then passed her the small pastries. "Eat them while they’re hot; they won’t taste as good when they cool."
She had no choice but to eat the pastries too. She didn’t even know how she ended up back in bed, nor did she recall those large hands embracing her. She tried to push him away several tis, but she had no strength, only able to let him do as he pleased.
Groggily, she fell asleep again.
This ti, it was Wan Donglin who stayed awake all night.
He lay beside her the entire night. In the darkness, no one knew what he was thinking. When she turned over, he shifted with her, still gently holding her hand. After a long while, his large hand quietly ca to rest on her abdon.
It was still flat, showing nothing yet, only exceptionally warm and soft.
The doctor had said this tiny life was less than forty days old. It’s hard to imagine what it looks like. Perhaps it’s only the size of a lentil?
His large hand rested there gently for a very long ti, but Yan Xixi never knew.
Only occasionally, when she turned onto her side, her body would shudder violently. It was the kind of shudder caused by being startled in one’s sleep. That night, Wan Donglin noticed her spasming so violently two or three tis. Later, he simply gathered her into his arms, and sure enough, she didn’t spasm again before dawn.
She awoke to find it was already afternoon.
Yan Xixi dazedly turned over and sat up. She found soone sitting by the bedside, who spoke gently, "Xixi, are you hungry? I had soone prepare a few light dishes today; I’m sure they’ll suit your taste."
She didn’t answer. She silently dressed, got out of bed, and went to freshen up.
In less than ten minutes, she had returned to the bedroom, picked up her handbag, and said calmly, "Mr. Wan, let’s go. We can go to the hospital now."
He took her handbag and set it aside. "Go and eat."
"I have no appetite."
"Even if you have no appetite, you must eat first."
"That won’t be necessary. The doctor said one must fast for at least twelve hours before the surgery."
"It’s no use. You already ate last night."
She felt dizzy and stood rooted to the spot. She silently recalled that she had indeed eaten sothing in the middle of the night. No wonder she had slept until noon without feeling particularly hungry.
