A soft knock ca at the door.

"Fiona?" Caleb’s voice was gentle. "Can I co in?"

She took a shaky breath.

"Yes."

He stepped inside, closing the door behind him. He didn’t approach the bed imdiately. He stood near the door, giving her space, his expression full of regret.

"I’m sorry," he said quietly. "I should have told you sooner. I was scared that if I revealed it too early, you would think I was just another powerful man trying to control your life. I wanted you to choose for ... not because of what I own."

Fiona looked at him, her eyes still wet.

"I feel like such an idiot," she whispered. "All this ti, I thought you were this steady, safe architect who was offering an escape. Now I find out you’re the one who dropped the bomb that made Voss panic. The one everyone thinks I helped."

Caleb took a cautious step closer.

"I never asked you for information. I never used you. The Lumina Glow launch was planned months ago. The timing was strategic, but it had nothing to do with you. I swear on my life, Fiona."

She stared at her hands, voice barely above a whisper.

"You should at least have been honest with . I have a choice to make, you know."

Caleb’s face tightened with pain, but he remained quiet, letting her speak.

Fiona’s voice grew stronger, though it still trembled.

"I really do not think we should continue with our arrangent, Caleb."

The words hung heavy in the sterile hospital room. Caleb’s breath caught visibly. For a mont, he looked like she had struck him.

"Fiona..." he started, taking another step forward before stopping himself. "Please don’t say that. I know I ssed up. I should have told you the mont things beca serious between us. But I was terrified of losing you. I didn’t want you to think this was all so calculated move against Martin. I wanted you to choose because you felt safe with ... not because I own a company."

Fiona shook her head, tears slipping down her cheeks again.

"That’s exactly the problem. You hid sothing this big from . Everyone at Voss already thinks I’m a sellout. If they find out I’m engaged to the man who owns Moonshine... it won’t just confirm their suspicions. It will destroy whatever is left of my na in this industry. I’ll be the ultimate traitor. The woman who slept with the rival CEO and sold out her old company. How am I supposed to look at myself in the mirror knowing that?"

Her voice broke on the last word. She wiped her face angrily, frustrated with her own tears.

Caleb looked devastated. He ran a hand through his hair, clearly struggling to find the right words.

"I never wanted any of this to hurt you," he said, his voice rough with emotion. "The rivalry with Voss... it started long before you. It was never about using you. But I see now how this looks. I kept the truth from you because I was scared. That was my mistake. But please, Fiona... don’t end us over it. We can slow down. We can wait to announce anything. Just don’t push away when you need most."

Fiona looked at him, her heart aching.

"I need ti, Caleb. Real ti. Not just a few hours. Everything is crashing down at once. Martin showing up at my door, Clara seeing near the maternity wing, now this... I feel like I’m drowning. I thought you were my safe place. Now I don’t know what to believe."

Caleb’s shoulders slumped. He looked like he wanted to reach for her, to pull her into his arms, but he respected the distance she had created.

"I understand," he said quietly. "I’ll give you space. But know this I love you. Not because of any rivalry or business. I love you because you’re strong, kind, and you’ve fought harder than anyone I know. When you’re ready, I’ll be here. No pressure. No secrets. Just ."

He paused at the door, looking back at her one last ti.

"Take all the ti you need. I’ll be waiting... however long it takes."

The door clicked shut behind him.

Fiona curled up on the hospital bed, pulling the thin blanket over her shoulders. The tears ca harder now, silent sobs shaking her body. She felt betrayed, overwheld, and deeply confused. Caleb had been her rock. Now that rock felt cracked.

Outside in the hallway, Caleb leaned against the wall, eyes closed, breathing deeply. The regret on his face was palpable. He had waited so long for Fiona to choose him, only to watch her pull away because of the very secret he had kept to protect her.

Elara approached from the vending machine area, two cups of tea in her hands. She saw Caleb’s expression and sighed.

"She needs ti," Elara said quietly, handing him one of the cups. "My daughter has had her heart broken too many tis. Give her space to think clearly."

Caleb nodded, accepting the tea.

"I know. I just hope she doesn’t decide to face all of this alone."

Inside the room, Fiona stared at the ceiling, her mind racing.

Caleb owned Moonshine.

The rival everyone feared.

The company that had tid its launch perfectly to hurt Voss.

And she was supposed to be his fiancée.

The thought made her feel sick all over again.

She didn’t know if she could trust him anymore.

She didn’t know if she could trust anyone.

All she knew was that she needed to protect her baby even if that ant protecting her child from the very man who had promised to be its father.

Elara entered the room quietly, closing the door behind her with a soft click. She left Caleb standing in the hallway, shoulders tense, eyes distant.

Fiona was still curled up on the hospital bed, knees drawn to her chest as much as the IV line would allow. Her eyes were red and swollen, her face pale under the harsh fluorescent lights. The mont she saw her mother, fresh tears slipped down her cheeks.

Elara crossed the room without hesitation and sat on the edge of the bed. She pulled Fiona into her arms, holding her tightly, one hand gently stroking her hair the way she had done when Fiona was a little girl.

"You know he is a good man, Fiona," Elara said softly, her voice steady and warm. "And whatever is going on, you need to figure out who is truly on your side. Rember this Mom is always here, no matter what."

Fiona clung to her mother, burying her face in Elara’s shoulder as sobs shook her body.

"Mom... Caleb owns Moonshine," she whispered, the words spilling out like a confession. "This has just changed a big narrative over everything I thought I knew."

Elara held her tighter, letting her cry for a few monts before speaking again.

"Shh... breathe, my darling. Tell everything."

Fiona pulled back slightly, wiping her face with the back of her hand. Her voice was shaky but urgent.

"He told just now. He owns the entire company. The architecture firm was just a cover. He’s been the one behind Moonshine this whole ti the rival that dropped the Lumina Glow launch right before our event. The one everyone at Voss is panicking about. And now... I’m supposed to be engaged to him? The man who helped destroy the company I just resigned from?"

She let out another shaky laugh, this one filled with disbelief and pain.

"I feel so stupid, Mom. I thought he was my safe place. This steady, kind architect who wanted to protect and the baby. Now I find out he’s been playing a long ga against Martin. What if people find out? They’ll say I was working with him all along. That I really am the sellout Clara accused of being. That I leaked information and ran straight into the arms of Voss’s biggest enemy."

Elara listened carefully, her hand never leaving Fiona’s back. When Fiona finally fell silent, Elara spoke with quiet strength.

"I understand why you’re scared. This is a big secret he kept from you, and timing like this makes it hurt even more. But let’s look at what we know, not just what we fear."

She gently tilted Fiona’s chin so their eyes t.

"Caleb has been there for you when no one else was. He stood up to Martin at your door. He answered every hard question I threw at him without flinching. He offered to adopt this baby and give you both a real future. Those aren’t the actions of a man who is using you. Those are the actions of a man who loves you."

Fiona’s lip trembled.

"But he lied, Mom. By omission. He let believe he was just an architect offering an escape. Now everything feels tainted. The job offer, the proposal... was any of it real, or was I just part of his plan to hurt Martin?"

Elara sighed, brushing a strand of hair from Fiona’s face.

"Only you can decide that. But from what I’ve seen, that man looks at you like you’re his whole world. He didn’t have to co running when you called him tonight. He didn’t have to stand up to Martin on your porch. He chose to. That says sothing."

Fiona stared down at her hands, voice small.

"I told him I needed space. That I don’t think we should continue with the engagent right now. It feels too ssy. Too complicated. I just wanted a clean break from Voss... not to jump straight into another war."

Elara nodded slowly.

"That’s a wise choice for now. Take the ti you need to think clearly. Don’t rush into marriage or any big announcents while your heart is hurting and your mind is clouded. But don’t close the door completely either, my love. Good n who are willing to fight for you are rare. And Caleb has proven he’s willing to fight."

Fiona leaned her head on her mother’s shoulder again, exhausted but comforted by her presence.

"I’m so tired, Mom....
