Rona Langdon reached out and poked Vera Xavier on the forehead. "Fine. If you actually get accepted, I’ll give you a flat ten thousand yuan for school!"
She looked at her with contempt as she continued, "But let’s get the unpleasantries out of the way first. If you don’t get accepted, I won’t support you any longer. You can get your ass to work!"
In her eyes, with Vera Xavier’s current grades, there was no way she could get into a university.
Vera Xavier turned to Zachary Preston. "Dad, you have to be my witness for this. I’m afraid Mom will back out of it later!"
Deep down, Zachary Preston was worried about her, but things had already been said. He couldn’t refuse, so he agreed, "Alright, I’ll be the witness."
Vera Xavier reached for the last at bun on the plate, but Rona Langdon smacked her hand with her chopsticks. "Feeling gutsy, are we? If you’re so capable, then you should be spending your ti studying, not eating buns!"
Rona Langdon snatched the bun and shoved it into her own mouth. Even though she was already full, she’d rather do that than let Vera have it.
Vera Xavier simply raised an eyebrow, not bothering to argue with her. Zachary Preston, however, frowned. He knew Rona Langdon had already made a concession today; if he said anything more, she would definitely throw a massive tantrum.
That morning, Rona Langdon had begrudgingly loaded the Kane family’s betrothal gifts into a car and returned them. Though she hadn’t wanted to, she still put on a powerful display when she went.
Vera, enjoying a rare mont of peace, was about to take the money Zachary had given her to buy so books. Before she could head out, however, Cara stopped her. "Sis, are you hiding sothing from ?"
Vera smiled. "What could I possibly hide from you?"
Cara put on a hurt expression. "You used to tell everything. But you had a picture of Wesley Kane today, and you didn’t say a thing to about it?"
"I didn’t have a chance to!" Vera replied, mimicking Cara’s hurt look. "We haven’t had a single mont to speak alone since I got back yesterday."
Cara was montarily speechless. ’It was true.’ From the mont Vera returned yesterday, she had been too busy waiting to see her sister fail to actually seek her out for a private conversation.
Cara took her hand. "I thought you were mad at and giving the cold shoulder."
"Have you done sothing to wrong that would make angry?" Vera asked, her expression a mask of innocence.
"Of course not!" Cara said gently. "You’re my older sister. In my heart, you’re the person I’m closest to in the world."
A faint smile touched Vera’s lips. "I feel the sa way! Oh, by the way, Mom cleared out all my books and sold them for scrap. Since your grades are so good, you probably don’t need your freshman and sophomore yearbooks anymore, right? How about you let borrow them for a while?"
Cara’s expression stiffened. "I only have one set. I’m in my review period right now, so I need them. I can’t lend them to you."
’Even though she believed it was impossible for Vera to get into a university, Vera had sounded so confident today. Cara felt a flicker of unease despite her scorn, and she had no intention of giving her sister even the slightest advantage.’
’Besides, her notes in those books were excellent!’
’It would be best if Vera didn’t have any books to study from at all. Then there’d be no chance of her even thinking about getting into a university.’
Vera sighed. "So this is what you call being ’the person I’m closest to in the world.’ Cara, you’ve truly disappointed !"
