Cara Preston had realized her mother’s intentions long ago. She knew that even if she got into a university, Rona Langdon wouldn’t pay for her tuition. From Rona’s narrow point of view, an educated daughter would be a threat. She’d worry that once Cara’s horizons were broadened beyond Crestfall, she would no longer be willing to marry Maxwell Preston.
But with Nathaniel Nathan in the picture, Cara Preston now had the leverage she needed to persuade Rona Langdon. She had always been a scher and knew better than anyone how crucial getting an education and leaving Crestfall was for her future.
"But it doesn’t seem like Nathaniel Nathan has any interest in you," Rona Langdon said with a frown.
Cara Preston smiled. "Mom, you have to trust . Even if Nathaniel has no interest in right now, I know I can make him see how wonderful I am. In the end, I’ll be the one he marries."
Rona Langdon actually believed her on that point. She had raised Cara, after all, and knew her daughter had been cunning from a young age. Her gaze hardened as she looked at Cara. "What you’re saying makes sense, but you still have to get into a university first."
"Don’t worry, Mom!" Cara quickly assured her. "There are still about twenty days left. With my grades, I can definitely get into a university!"
Rona Langdon gave a slight nod. "Just don’t disappoint again."
Cara nodded eagerly. "Mom, you’re the only person in this world I can rely on. Trust . Once I’ve made it, I’ll take good care of you, and I’ll definitely help my older brother."
But in her heart, she thought, ’Once I make it big, I’ll make you suffer, you old hag. I’ll pay you back for all the years you’ve tornted !’
A look of satisfaction spread across Rona Langdon’s face. "It’s good that you think that way. It ans all my affection for you wasn’t wasted."
With their agreent settled, the mother and daughter each began to plot. Cara focused on how to get into Nathaniel Nathan’s bed, while Rona sched about how to completely destroy Vera Xavier.
Rona racked her brain and ca up with several plans, but they all required money.
The Preston Family had so savings, but she didn’t want to touch them. Her top priority was to get her hands on Zachary Preston’s paycheck for the month.
When Zachary Preston ca ho from work that afternoon, Rona Langdon hurried over to him. "Did you get your paycheck this month?"
"I did," Zachary said, glancing at her.
"Give it to ," Rona said, holding out her hand expectantly. "The utility bills are due."
"I already paid them all yesterday afternoon." Zachary’s tone was icy. "Since you’re incapable of running this household, then don’t. I’ll handle these things myself from now on."
Rona Langdon froze on the spot. If Zachary wouldn’t give her his paycheck, what would she use to support her parents every month? How would she maintain her standing with her own family? How was she supposed to take care of Vera Xavier?
She was about to explode, but Zachary said coldly, "Rona Langdon, if you dare throw another tantrum today, we’re getting a divorce. Imdiately."
He added, "And I’m not kidding this ti."
Rona’s chest heaved with anger. She stared at Zachary in disbelief. "Are you trying to kill ?"
Disappointnt flooded Zachary’s heart when he heard that. He couldn’t believe she would say sothing so drastic. All he had done was ask her to get a job, and she was twisting it into him trying to kill her!
With that one sentence, the last shred of compassion he felt for her vanished into thin air.
