This had been weighing on Nathaniel Nathan’s mind for a few days. He wanted to ask her but was afraid she either wouldn’t answer or would just make sothing up. Now that the topic had co up, he finally couldn’t hold back any longer.
Vera Xavier’s heart skipped a beat. In this life, she was just a girl from the countryside; it was indeed strange for her to know those kinds of fighting moves.
This was a difficult question to answer, so she decided to deflect. "So you were there early that day! Nathaniel Nathan, you’re unbelievable! You got there and just watched get hit before you stepped in. That’s just awful!"
Nathaniel Nathan froze for a second, then instantly understood her ploy. A wave of disappointnt washed over him.
But her accusation did put him on the spot. The truth was, he had arrived just as she started fighting that gang of thugs. He had been taken aback by her ferocity. In that mont, she was nothing like the little lamb she was around him. He was curious where she had learned such skills.
Just then, his sharp eyes spotted a piece of pink stationery sticking out of the side of her bookbag. He pulled it out, and his expression imdiately darkened. "Vera Xavier," he asked coldly, "what’s your explanation for this?"
Vera Xavier was also a little confused when she saw the stationery. That particular kind of pink paper was what the students in her class used for love letters.
’No one at school would write a love letter,’ she thought. So she said casually, "Maybe one of my classmates put it in there by mistake..."
She trailed off and ekly shut her mouth, because the letter began with: "Dearest Vera..."
Vera Xavier’s mind went blank for a mont before she excitedly snatched the letter from Nathaniel Nathan’s hand. "Holy crap, a love letter! It’s actually a love letter!"
She had lived two lifetis, and this was the first love letter she had ever received. For a mont, she simply couldn’t contain her excitent. It wasn’t that she cared much for this specific letter, but she was ecstatic that soone would actually write her one!
’So this is what it feels like to get a love letter. It’s nothing special, really!’
She felt the temperature around her seem to plumt. A turn of her head revealed Nathaniel Nathan’s face, which was cold enough to turn water to ice. She had actually seen him with this expression many tis in her past life.
She gulped and let out a nervous laugh. "I have no idea what moron wrote this love letter; I didn’t see it until now. Co on, Nathaniel Nathan, let’s read it together! This is the first love letter I’ve ever received in my entire life!"
Nathaniel Nathan: "..."
’Can’t she tell how angry I am? How dare she ask to read a love letter so other guy wrote to her!’
’Fine.’ He had to admit, he was both jealous and curious. Jealous that so guy was writing her love letters, and curious what love letters from boys these days even said.
He even regretted it. Since she was so keen on getting love letters, he should have written her one. The fact that her first-ever love letter wasn’t from him... that realization left a seriously bad taste in his mouth!
His expression was always cold, so Vera Xavier didn’t think much of it. She held up the love letter and started reading it aloud to him: "Vera, in my heart, you are a goddess from the heavens—beautiful, poised, and graceful. You are as pure as the silvery moonlight, as brilliant as the radiant sun, as splendid as a delicate spring blossom, and as fresh as a newly sprouted bud on a branch..."
She had just read this far when Nathaniel Nathan cut in coldly, "Idiot!"
Vera Xavier felt the oppressive atmosphere return, and a shiver went down her spine. She cleared her throat and said, "Right! What a total idiot! He has absolutely no literary flair. It’s just a pile of adjectives with no real substance. Utterly crude! To use writing like this for a love letter... it’s an insult to the two words ’love letter’!"
