At this rate, if Vera Xavier planned to use this fire to boil water for noodles or make breakfast, she would be late before she even finished.

Vera glanced at the large clock hanging in the living room. It was already 7:10. With class starting at eight and the walk taking twenty minutes, she had another twenty minutes to eat.

Without a word, she slung her schoolbag over her shoulder and headed for the door.

Cara Preston’s eyes blinked when she saw the new dress on her. "Sis," she asked loudly, "when did you buy new clothes?"

Vera glanced at Cara. She was wearing a brand-new, fashionable floral dress—the very one Vera had purchased for her own wedding to Wesley Kane.

She and Cara had similar figures, so the dress fit Cara perfectly, as if it had been tailor-made for her.

Today, Cara had her hair in two braids, the ends tied with pink silk flowers. Combined with her naturally delicate, oval face, the look was fresh and lovely, perfectly in line with the era’s aesthetic.

Of course, to Vera, the look was just a bit provincial.

Vera knew Cara was a born troublemaker, so she just gave a small smile, not bothering to answer.

Seeing Vera look so calm and composed, Cara almost bit through her lip.

Clothes really do make the person. With her new outfit and changed expression, Vera’s old timidity was gone, replaced by a calm and composed presence.

She was only just realizing that Vera actually had porcelain skin and delicate features. Even with her simple, ear-length bob and no accessories, she was breathtakingly beautiful.

Jealousy gnawed at her heart like a venomous snake. Almost unconsciously, she blurted out, "Sis, did you steal money from the family? Where else would you get the money for new clothes? Hey, your shoes are new, too!"

Vera’s eyes narrowed as she stared coldly at Cara.

Cara, however, put on an aggrieved expression and said, "Sis, if your grades are bad, people will just say you’re stupid at worst. But if you steal money from the family, that’s theft! That’s a sign of poor character. I know you’re from the countryside, but you still can’t do sothing like that!"

Rona Langdon imdiately poked her head out from upstairs and yelled, "Who stole money from the family?"

Cara quickly said, "Mom, don’t be angry yet. Just because Sis has new clothes and shoes, it doesn’t necessarily an she stole family money to buy them. Maybe she found them, or maybe the Kane Family gave them to her."

After speaking, she shot Vera a glance, unable to hide the smug look in her eyes, yet feigning genuine concern. "Sis, you should hurry and explain to Mom that you didn’t steal the money."

Vera’s reaction to Cara’s performance could be sumd up in two words: "Yeah, right." This whole act of convicting soone while pretending to be the good guy was just too much.

Rona valued money above all else. She imdiately ca running down the stairs, her slippers making a SLAP SLAP SLAP sound. The mont she saw Vera’s new clothes and shoes, she flew into a rage and started screaming, "Vera Xavier, you’ve gotten bold, haven’t you! Daring to steal money from the family! I’ll beat you to death!"

As she spoke, she raised her hand to slap Vera’s face. But Vera had anticipated this, and her hand shot out, grabbing Rona’s Quchi acupoint. "Mom, I haven’t said a single thing. How can you just assu the clothes and shoes I’m wearing were bought with stolen money?"

Her grip wasn’t particularly strong, but she had targeted the acupoint with precision. With that one grab, Rona felt her entire arm go numb. The hand that had been about to slap Vera’s face was stopped dead, unable to move another inch.
