Shane Caldwell stood there, holding a bottle of water, at a loss for words. After all, he had just admitted he was there to see the rainbow. Anything else he said now would seem strange.
He couldn’t help but call out, "Vera!"
Vera turned to look at him, her gaze pure and clear. "Yes?"
Shane had wanted to comfort her. After all, what had happened to her family was a major ordeal, one that soone less strong-willed might not be able to handle. But aside from the faint dark circles under her eyes, she acted as if nothing was wrong.
But he’d been coddled his whole life and was terrible at comforting people. The words that tumbled out were: "I’m going to score better than you on the college entrance exam. If you don’t get into Veridia University, don’t say it’s because I picked on you!"
Vera gave him a smile. "Mr. President, you really should do sothing about that narcissistic streak. Be careful, or you might end up eating your own words."
With that, she turned and walked away.
Shane, however, was still replaying that fleeting, backward glance and smile. It was so radiant and pure. That one smile made him feel as if he were back in a March of brilliant blossoms, and she was as beautiful as a fairy who had stumbled into the mortal realm.
By the ti he snapped out of his daze, she was already far in the distance.
He then realized what he had just said to her and felt an overwhelming urge to slap himself. ’I just wanted to ask if she was okay, but I ended up saying *that*!’
He let out a long sigh and turned to look at the rainbow on the horizon. Perhaps because she had just been standing in this very spot watching it, this rainbow seed more brilliant and beautiful than any he had ever seen before.
Rona Langdon and the young thugs were at the police station sorting things out. It wasn’t until dark that the matter was finally clarified: the thugs had gotten the wrong person. Their Jason Langdon wasn’t *this* Jason Langdon.
The Langdon Family, of course, refused to accept this excuse, demanding compensation for the dical bills. The thugs, just as arrogant, refused to pay. Finally, after the police diated, they settled for a thousand dollars.
When the two groups finally left the station, the police chief felt like setting off firecrackers to celebrate getting rid of the troublemakers.
As Rona Langdon walked out, she realized her passbook—the one with a huge amount of money in it—was gone!
She imdiately panicked, crying out, "My passbook!"
Patricia Thompson asked her, "What passbook?"
Rona didn’t want to say it out loud, which only made her more frantic. She’d been running around all day, from the hospital to the police station, and had no idea where she might have lost it.
That passbook was incredibly important to her. She couldn’t even imagine how she would live the rest of her life if it was gone for good.
Cara Preston had been waiting outside for Rona for a while. Seeing her mother co out frantically searching for sothing, she hurried over. "Mom, what’s wrong?"
Rona was beside herself. "My passbook is gone! No, this is bad. I have to file a report!"
Cara, clearly more level-headed than her mother, quickly said, "Mom, don’t panic. Even if you really lost it, you can just go to the bank tomorrow with your ID to report it missing and get a new one issued. No one can withdraw money just by finding the passbook. They’d need your ID and the password."
Rona finally cald down a little after hearing her daughter’s explanation.
Just then, Jack Judd ca running over excitedly. "Cara, my wifey! I found a passbook, and it has tons of money in it! Marry ! If you marry , I’ll give you all the money!"
