Scott Sullivan cleared his throat. "That girl you were just holding... she isn’t your girlfriend, is she?"
He’d been in the room, so he’d seen the whole exchange.
Nathaniel Nathan shot him a look but didn’t speak. Scott Sullivan, however, imdiately began to praise Vera Xavier. "She’s really sothing—just the kind of woman you’d expect our captain to fall for. Beautiful, capable, and unbelievably brave. She actually used herself as bait to lure out the enemy!"
Nathaniel Nathan threw the cigarette he’d only taken two puffs from onto the ground and stomped on it viciously.
It slowly dawned on Scott Sullivan that he’d said the wrong thing. Nathaniel Nathan carried her picture with him every day, which ant she held an incredibly special place in his heart. If anything had gone even slightly wrong just now, the consequences would have been unimaginable.
After a mont, Nathaniel Nathan finally said, "You lead the team back. I’ll stay behind and see if there are any other accomplices."
Scott Sullivan froze for a mont before he understood what Nathaniel Nathan was really getting at. ’He’s not staying to look for accomplices; he clearly just wants to stay and spend ti with his girlfriend!’
This operation had resulted in killing the drug lord Trent Thornton, seizing a massive amount of narcotics, and dismantling the largest drug trafficking and production ring on the border. It was a huge achievent, and Nathaniel Nathan was essentially handing all the credit over to him.
He cleared his throat. "That’s against protocol..."
Nathaniel Nathan asked coldly, "What, you don’t know how the whole thing went down? You’re not clear on the details?"
Scott Sullivan’s expression was grim. "Of course not. It’s just... you’re our captain. The mission is finished. If you don’t go back and report, I’m afraid the Chairman won’t be happy."
Nathaniel Nathan said stonily, "What do you an the Chairman won’t be happy? The mission isn’t over yet. I’m staying to mop up the rest of their gang."
Scott Sullivan grumbled to himself, ’Captain, if you want to stay with your lady, just say so. Do you really have to make such a high-and-mighty excuse?’
He pursed his lips. "In that case, I’ll stay behind and help you."
He was dying of curiosity about Vera Xavier. With so many people around earlier, he hadn’t had a chance to talk to her. He wanted to find an opportunity to chat with her and see for himself what kind of woman could capture Nathaniel Nathan’s heart so completely.
Nathaniel Nathan shot him a look, instantly seeing through his intentions. "I’m more than enough to handle this alone," he said coldly. "Having you stay would be a waste of manpower."
Scott Sullivan was at a loss for words.
Just then, Shannon Quinn ran over. "Captain, a dozen or so people just burst in through the front entrance of the market. We’re not yet sure if they’re accomplices."
"I’ll go!" Scott Sullivan exclaid, glancing at Nathaniel Nathan. "So they really did have backup!"
Jack Judd ran into the market, leading a dozen or so thugs. He had chosen these n based on his years of experience and, of course, had promised each of them a handso reward.
The only reason he was so late was that he’d run into the local gang boss while gathering his n. They’d gotten into a fight, and Jack Judd, unable to win, had to promise a hefty paynt. Only then could he hurry over with the thugs.
He had seen the explosion at the market just as he was setting out with his n. The sight had nearly scared him to death.
All he could do now was pray Vera Xavier was unhard. Otherwise, even dying ten tis over wouldn’t be enough to atone for his failure.
The mont he stepped into the market, however, he felt that sothing was off. It seed as if soone was watching them from the shadows. He was terrified, but his worry for Vera Xavier overrode his fear; he had to go in, no matter what.
