Watching Zachary Preston and Vera Xavier interact made Cara Preston extrely uncomfortable, but she smiled and said, "Dad, you’re the best!"

She then added, her eyes darting slyly, "My sister always used to score zero on her exams. After eating the eggs and noodles Dad made, I’m sure she’ll be able to score a perfect hundred."

Vera Xavier knew Cara Preston was taking another opportunity to bad-mouth her in front of Zachary Preston. Her expression darkened, but Zachary Preston said, "As long as you both try your best, your scores don’t matter."

Cara Preston was taken aback. Vera Xavier chuckled and said, "Dad, I’ll work hard. I won’t disappoint you."

On the way to school, Cara Preston asked Vera Xavier, "Vera, how could you make Mom so angry yesterday? She’s your biological mother, after all!"

Vera Xavier brushed her bangs aside, revealing a forehead sared with gentian violet. "When she was hitting , was I supposed to just stand there and let her, and get beaten to death?"

Cara Preston froze. "Of course not..."

Vera Xavier looked at Cara Preston and said, "In any case, I can never seem to win Mom’s favor, no matter what I do. So from now on, I’ll just focus on getting beaten less."

With that, she strode away. Cara Preston stared at her perfectly straight back. From behind, even with a large backpack on, it was impossible to hide her well-developed figure.

As Vera Xavier and Cara Preston reached the school gate, they ran into Elise Langdon. Elise yanked Cara aside. "Why are you still walking to school with her?"

"She’s my sister, after all," Cara Preston said gently, before adding, "We live together, so it wouldn’t be right to just leave her behind. Besides, she’s so sensitive. She’d go tattling to my mom, and Mom would definitely take her side. You know how it is—at the end of the day, Vera is her biological daughter."

"Oh, you poor thing, Cara," Elise Langdon said sympathetically. "You’re obviously so much better than she is!"

A bitter smile played on Cara Preston’s lips.

Elise Langdon snarled at Vera Xavier, "A good-for-nothing like you who gets a zero every ti... I don’t even know why you’re alive. If I were you, I’d have killed myself long ago!"

Vera Xavier was used to Cara Preston bad-mouthing her in front of their classmates. In the past, she had been too kind-hearted. Coupled with Cara’s manipulation, she had once believed that by returning, she had stolen Cara’s happiness. Because of that, she had always felt guilty and let Cara have her way in everything.

She couldn’t be bothered to waste her breath on soone like Elise Langdon, who had clearly been brainwashed by Cara. Carrying her backpack, she calmly walked around them and headed into the classroom.

It was morning reading period, and the horoom teacher, Juliana Taylor, was in the classroom. Noticing the wound on Vera Xavier’s head, she asked, "What happened here?"

Vera Xavier avoided her gaze. "I accidentally fell yesterday."

Juliana Taylor asked again, "Did you go to the hospital?"

"I’m fine, Ms. Taylor. I can attend class," Vera Xavier replied, deflecting the question.

Juliana Taylor paused for a mont but didn’t press the matter. She went back to supervising the students during their morning self-study period.

Shane Caldwell suddenly stood up and said, "Ms. Taylor, I’d like to request a seat change to beco Vera Xavier’s deskmate."
