Vera Xavier sneered inwardly. ’Cara Preston is already getting antsy, and this is only the beginning.’
For the next few classes, Cara Preston remained distracted by the incident. At one point, the teacher called on her, and she stumbled over the answer. A few girls who never got along with her snickered in the corner.
Cara Preston found the whole thing incredibly humiliating, and it left a sour taste in her mouth. She had no choice but to force herself to pay attention for the rest of her classes.
When school let out that afternoon, she left the classroom with Vera Xavier, just as she always did. Waiting until no one was paying attention to them, she whispered, "Sis, how could you talk like that today?"
Vera Xavier looked at her, feigning confusion. "Did I say sothing wrong?"
Cara Preston faltered for a second, then said in an accusatory tone, "We’re sisters. I was reminding you for your own good! If you hadn’t been staring at the class monitor, why would I have even looked over at you two? Now the whole class misunderstands !"
Vera Xavier nodded. "Hm, that makes sense. But since you’re doing it for my own good, could you remind in private next ti? Pointing it out in front of the entire class like that makes *them* misunderstand things."
Cara Preston t Vera Xavier’s clear gaze and said softly, "You’re right, I didn’t think it through. I’ll be more careful next ti."
Hearing this, Vera Xavier offered a gentle smile of her own. ’If Cara Preston loves putting on an act this much, then I’ll gladly play along.’
Cara Preston added, "Sis, you have to rember one thing: we’re the real sisters here. Don’t let anyone drive a wedge between us. No matter what I do, it’s always for your own good."
"Okay, I’ll rember that," Vera Xavier said with a smile.
’Cara Preston, looking out for ? Yeah, right!’
’I rember with crystal clarity how Cara Preston treated in my past life. Saying all this now... in the end, it’s just an attempt to brainwash .’
Just then, Elise Langdon ca over to get Cara Preston. Cara’s eyes lit up, and she said to Vera Xavier, "I’m going to Elise’s to study. You can go ho by yourself, Sis!"
Before Vera Xavier could even nod, Cara Preston had already run off with Elise Langdon.
From a distance, she could still hear Elise Langdon’s voice: "Cara, you’re just too kind. After how she treated you, you’re still speaking to her so nicely."
"What can I do? She’s my sister," Cara Preston’s voice sounded wronged, yet incredibly gentle and harmless.
’I’ve heard this sa old line so many tis since my rebirth. It’s so fucking disgusting.’
As Vera Xavier was walking out with her backpack on, she ran into Shirley Forrest. Rembering Shirley’s help earlier that day, she walked up to her and said, "Thanks."
Shirley Forrest glanced at her. "Don’t thank . If you want to thank soone, thank yourself for not being as stupid as you used to be."
Vera Xavier: "..."
With that, Shirley Forrest turned and walked away.
’Her personality is really sothing else,’ Vera thought. ’She’s not just cold; she’s downright sharp-tongued.’
But Vera Xavier knew that was just Shirley’s personality, so she didn’t take it to heart. She just shrugged and headed ho with her backpack.
When she got ho, Rona Langdon was in the middle of a mahjong ga with a few of the neighborhood ladies. As soon as they saw her, one of them said with a smile, "Oh, Vera’s back!"
Vera Xavier hadn’t been back with the Preston Family for long, and Rona Langdon rarely let her go out, so she only recognized one of these won—the one who had just greeted her. That woman’s deanor was a carbon copy of Rona Langdon’s.
She gave a polite greeting. "Hello, Alden."
