Vera Xavier chuckled. "You’ve never asked before."
’That’s right. In the eyes of the entire Preston family, the Xaviers were from the countryside and dirt poor. Subconsciously, they assud that people that poor could only have poor relatives.’
Cara Preston was speechless, but seeing all these things made her seethe with jealousy. ’She was the Xavier family’s biological daughter, so all of this should have been hers!’
After a long mont, Cara Preston finally asked, "How would my cousin know our address?"
"Mrs. Xavier probably told him in a letter." Vera continued her fabrication. "My older cousin has always been very good to , but he doesn’t usually send this much. He was probably worried I wouldn’t adjust to life in the city, so he sent so things over this ti."
Cara Preston smiled. "Was your older cousin worried you wouldn’t have enough food to eat or clothes to wear here at ho?"
"I don’t think that’s what he was thinking. It’s just a kind gesture," Vera said with a smile. "After all, he doted on the most when I was a child."
Cara Preston gritted her teeth, but then put on a smile. "Vera, we’re biological sisters. What’s yours is mine. Besides, your cousin from the Xavier family is my *biological* cousin, so let’s split all this fifty-fifty!"
’Vera had to admire her shalessness. When the Preston and Xavier families discovered the girls had been switched at birth, they’d wanted to send Cara back to the Xaviers. But Cara had refused for dear life, and since Mrs. Xavier was too soft-hearted to force her, the matter was dropped. Yet now, the mont she saw these gifts, she was suddenly claiming the Xavier family’s cousin as her own biological cousin.’
’If these things had really co from the Xaviers, she wouldn’t mind splitting them with Cara.’
’But Nathaniel Nathan bought these for her!’
’The mont she rembered how Cara had spent their past life scheming to get her hooks into Nathaniel, a wave of revulsion washed over her. There was absolutely no way she would share anything he’d bought for her with Cara.’
So, she put on a troubled expression and said, "I don’t know about that. After all, you’ve never even t my older cousin. Besides, the packages clearly state that he sent these things to ."
Cara Preston imdiately looked aggrieved. "Vera, I always share any nice things we get at ho with you. Now you have so much, and you won’t share any of it with . Does this an you’ve never truly thought of as your sister?"
Vera looked conflicted and turned to Zachary Preston.
Zachary Preston frowned slightly. ’He had always thought Cara was generous and sensible, but now she was revealing herself to be rather petty and shallow.’
He stepped forward and said, "Vera, give half of the snacks to Cara. You can keep the clothes and shoes for yourself."
Cara imdiately grew anxious. "Dad, but there are so many outfits! Surely Vera can spare one for ?"
The displeasure in Zachary Preston’s eyes deepened. "What’s there to share? The outfit your mother had made for Vera’s wedding—didn’t you end up taking that to wear?"
He then turned to Vera and said, "Your cousin sent you all this because he cares about you. But that’s still his money, and now you owe him a debt of gratitude. You’ll have to repay that favor in the future."
"I will, Dad," Vera said, ’greatly admiring Zachary Preston’s way of handling things.’
’It was a pity Cara had already been spoiled rotten by Rona Langdon.’
Cara’s eyes went red with envy as she stared at Vera’s large pile of beautifully designed and expertly tailored clothes and shoes.
