As for friends, the old Vera Xavier had been introverted and a bit timid. Between the prejudice she faced for being from the countryside and Cara Preston’s troublemaking, she hadn’t made a single friend in the city.
She glanced at the bustling street, her heart pounding with uncertainty. ’Am I going to have to sleep on the streets tonight?!’
She lingered at the intersection for a long while. After racking her brain, it seed the only person she could turn to for a place to stay was Nathaniel Nathan.
Thanks to her mories from her past life, she knew Nathaniel Nathan usually lived in a small building in the southern part of the city with his family’s elders. Sothing about just running over there felt wrong to her.
But if she didn’t go find him, it seed she had nowhere else to go.
So, after a mont of indecision, she finally made up her mind to go find him.
The Nathan Family’s ho in the southern part of the city wasn’t too far, but it wasn’t close either. It took her nearly an hour to walk there. When she finally stood before the small building, however, she felt an inexplicable nervousness creep into her heart.
’Even though Nathaniel Nathan and I are already registered as married, I’ve never t his family!’
’They say a new bride eventually has to et her in-laws, but I haven’t even fallen for Nathaniel Nathan yet. I’m not even sure if we can have a future together.’
’And what if they look down on for showing up at their ho so rashly?’
While she was wrestling with her indecision, she suddenly heard soone inside cry out in panic, "Master Nathan, what’s wrong?"
The mont Vera Xavier heard the shout, she suddenly rembered sothing. The reason she’d been able to escape from Nathaniel Nathan in her past life was that a major incident had occurred in his family. She only found out later that the so-called "major incident" was his grandfather’s fatal heart attack.
She stood outside the courtyard and glanced in, seeing Master Nathan already lying on the ground.
’It can’t be this much of a coincidence, can it?’ At that mont, Vera Xavier couldn’t afford to overthink. Saving a life was what mattered; everything else could wait. She ran directly to the pharmacy across the street and said, "Sir, I need a bottle of nitroglycerin and a box of Rapid Heart Saving Pills."
Both were common drugs that pharmacies kept in stock. The owner handed them to her and said, "That’ll be thirty-five eighty."
Vera Xavier gave him an awkward smile. "This is to save a life! I’ll pay you back in a minute!"
With that, she grabbed the dicine and ran.
’Even though these dicines had an OTC label, their efficacy was a far cry from the ones she had formulated in her past life. But this was an ergency, and she didn’t have her own redies on hand. She would have to make do with these for now.’
A thought suddenly struck her. ’Maybe I should start my past life’s work ahead of schedule in this one.’
The owner panicked. "Hey, you haven’t paid yet!"
Vera Xavier had no ti to worry about that now. She rushed headlong into the Nathan Family’s small building.
At that mont, only Master Nathan and the nanny, Lana Cheney, were ho. Lana was an ordinary housekeeper who had never encountered a situation like this before. She was already scared out of her wits. Seeing Vera Xavier rush in, she asked in shock, "Who are you? What are you doing in our house?"
Vera Xavier had no ti to explain. She glanced at Master Nathan—his face was turning blue, his eyes were rolling back, and his hand was clutching his chest. From the looks of it, he was in extre danger.
Seeing Lana Cheney move to block her, she said quickly, "I’m here to save him! Go get a glass of water, quick!"
Lana Cheney was in a complete panic. Hearing Vera’s command, she obeyed on reflex and quickly brought back a glass of water.
