Vera Xavier felt Nathaniel Nathan was really fixated on the word "sleep" tonight. She rubbed her forehead and braced herself, saying, "Fine!"
Nathaniel Nathan noticed her expression and frowned slightly. Master Nathan had been hospitalized today, and even though they’d hired a caregiver, he couldn’t help but worry and needed to stay at the hospital. Therefore, his use of the word "sleep" was ant as a noun, not a verb.
He gave her a aningful look as he left, but said nothing more, simply turning and heading for the hospital.
Vera finally felt herself relax a little once he was gone.
He was clearly a neat freak; his room looked incredibly clean and tidy, and the bathroom was spotless. The space was filled with the signs of his life, making her feel both like an outsider and intensely curious.
She wasn’t in the habit of snooping through other people’s things. And yet, legally speaking, they were already husband and wife. Although she had mories of a past life, they were essentially strangers. Or rather, the him she’d known in her past life wasn’t the real him.
She flopped onto his bed, and the air filled with his unique, cool scent.
She did a full roll on his bed, suddenly intrigued by what their future life together might hold.
It was still early and Vera wasn’t sleepy, so she pulled a book from the shelf to read. Four words were written on the flyleaf: "The Heart’s Only One." Her heart stirred at the sight. She flipped through the rest of the pages, but there was no other distinctive handwriting.
She casually picked up other books, and the sa line was written on the flyleaf of every one.
Vera grew curious. ’Could that line be about ?’
Nathaniel wasn’t around, so she couldn’t confirm her suspicion. She picked a book that looked interesting and settled in against his bed to read.
She didn’t know how late she’d stayed up reading or when she’d finally fallen asleep. When she next awoke, she sensed a person lying beside her. She jolted awake, and a mory from her past life sent her leg kicking out instinctively at the figure next to her.
Caught completely off guard, Nathaniel was knocked clean out of the bed. He scrambled up and stared at her, stunned. "What happened?"
The sight of him brought Vera snapping back to her senses. She said, embarrassed, "I’m sorry, I forgot I was at your house..."
Her words landed differently in Nathaniel’s ears, carrying an unintended implication. He gave her a complicated look. She quickly changed the subject, "When did you get back? I had no idea."
"You were dead to the world, so it’s perfectly normal you didn’t know I was back," Nathaniel said, looking at her. "But this habit of kicking people awake... you’ll have to change that. After all, you’ll need to get used to sleeping beside you."
Vera also felt she had gone a bit overboard. She’d slept in his bed, only to kick him right out of it. Her attitude beca incredibly conciliatory. "Okay, I’ll work on it."
Nathaniel’s gaze fell upon her, cool and unreadable. He lay down beside her again. "Well then, let’s start practicing today."
Vera froze. He reached out and patted the empty space beside him. She hesitated for a mont before obediently lying down next to him.
Because of the earlier commotion, neither of them felt sleepy anymore. Outside, the sky was already growing light.
Vera felt like she should say sothing, just to break the silence. She ntally cycled through a few topics, but none seed right. He spoke first. "Vera, don’t feel pressured being with . I’m not as intimidating as you think. For us to get along, you only need to rember one rule."
