Now reading: Chapter 45: Culling of the Weak from The Darkness System: Rise of the Broken Sovereign, a Fantasy novel by GodofWisdom.

Six months disappeared like water through a drain.

The Rust Tier promotion tournant ca and went. Kael dominated—then the Bronze tournant, then the Silver. Each victory quieter than the last. By the third month, people stopped betting against him. By the fourth, they stopped betting entirely.

The fox sisters followed him to Silver.

They beca like his fuckbuddies with so nights being a morable threeso with two lovely fox.

Aria remained his shadow. She’d broken through to Foundation Establishnt three months ago—a Flawless Core Rank 3.

Kira Storm never made it past Bronze.

She’d hit a wall at Core Formation Rank 9—couldn’t push into Foundation Establishnt no matter how hard she trained. Her lightning manipulation plateaued. The fire in her yellow eyes dimd. Last Kael heard, she’d been transferred to a different training squad and stopped coming to the observation decks when he fought.

Section 3 of Planet Athelas held roughly two hundred and fifty students when the year began. Iron through Gold, scattered across four designated training zones within the country of Veridas.

They didn’t know about Sections 1, 2, or 4. The instructors didn’t volunteer that information, and asking directly earned you extra conditioning laps. The vice principal—a reclusive woman nad Harlow Dubois who rarely erged from her tower—apparently believed ignorance built character.

Kael thought it built paranoia.

He’d pieced together the structure anyway through observation, inference, and one very talkative drunk instructor during a Bronze Tier social mixer he’d crashed for intelligence purposes.

Four sections. Four countries. Approximately one thousand year-one students total across Planet Athelas. The other four planets of the Crucible waited for subsequent years—each larger, each more dangerous, each holding secrets the vice principal refused to disclose.

The fifth planet was sealed entirely. No one knew why.

No upperclassn walked these halls. The Heaven’s Gate Academy operated on a four-year cycle—accept a batch, train them, graduate or bury them, then accept the next. The survivors went to the Universal Allied Forces, governnt positions, major families, guild work. So beca instructors at other academies. A few simply... disappeared.

Fifteen main academies existed across the known universe. Heaven’s Gate was among them—prestigious, brutal, and currently holding its breath for sothing the students couldn’t see.

The inter-academy competition—originally scheduled for the end of year one—had been postponed. Unknown reasons. The instructors’ expressions suggested they knew more than they’d say.

None of this concerned Kael directly.

What concerned him was the gap.

Foundation Establishnt Rank 4. Six months of brutal, relentless progression that had pushed his body and soul to their limits. The Void Body Refinent sat at Tier 3 Early now—dense bones, reinforced ridians, skin that could deflect mundane blades without mana reinforcent.

But Rank 4 wasn’t enough.

The strongest student in all of Section 3 was a Gold Tier monster nad Atlas Graves—Foundation Establishnt Rank 7, Earth Manipulation, a walking siege engine who’d once collapsed an entire training facility by accident.

Cassian Vale sat at Rank 6. Karacus at Rank 7.

Kael was fast, but fast didn’t matter when the gap between ranks asured in orders of magnitude.

The Silver Tier common room fell silent when the Head Teacher entered.

Professor Gideon Locke—Spirit Soul Realm Rank 3, tal Manipulation, a man built like a warship and twice as intimidating—surveyed the assembled students with cold indifference. Behind him, a cluster of instructors fanned out. So of them had taught Kael directly. Others were strangers whose cultivation levels made his teeth ache to perceive.

"Sit," Locke said.

Everyone sat.

Locke’s gaze swept the room—Silver and Gold students only now, packed into a space that had once held four tiers. The emptiness where Rust and Bronze stations should have been felt like a wound.

"Iron Tier has been expelled," Locke said with an indifferent expression.

Silence.

Then—murmurs. Shocked whispers. A Bronze Tier girl in the back made a strangled sound.

"Quiet." Locke’s voice carried the weight of soone who’d killed more people than most nations. The whispers died. "Of the two hundred and forty-seven students who entered Section 3 ten months ago, fifty-one held Iron designation at the midpoint evaluation. None of them have t the minimum threshold for continued enrollnt. They have been removed from the academy grounds and transported to return vessels. Their mories of this place will be partially sealed per standard protocol."

Kael watched the reactions.

Cassian Vale—slouched in his chair, pocket watch spinning lazily between his fingers—didn’t blink.

Karacus, massive and icicle-cold in the Gold section, let out a breath that frosted the air around him.

The fox sisters sat together, tails curled tight, expressions carefully neutral.

Most students looked horrified.

Kael still had an indifferent expression.

Fifty-one.

"They knew the rules," he murmured.

So of them were children.

"Everyone here is a child. That doesn’t change what this place is. Why do I feel like I’m the one educating you, system?"

Locke continued, voice flat, as if discussing weather patterns. "Bronze Tier will undergo final evaluation in three days. Those who fail to demonstrate Foundation Establishnt potential will face similar consequences. Silver and Gold tiers are not immune—rely delayed. Complacency kills faster than weakness."

The Bronze girl in the back looked like she might vomit.

"Additionally," Locke said, "your end-of-year examinations have been scheduled. Written component will follow the practical. The practical begins in seventy-two hours."

He let that sink in.

"Details will be distributed via your wrist communicators. Review them carefully. Group assignnts are final. Questions will not be entertained."

Locke turned and walked out without another word.

The instructors followed.

The room erupted.
