"How do we catch it?"
Gu Jiaojiao had never caught a pheasant before and had no idea where to start.
She looked up at the man holding her, her large eyes filled with confusion.
Leng Yuan didn’t say a word.
He pulled a sickle from the basket on his back and, with a flick of his wrist, sent it flying.
The pheasant scratching for food in the distance sensed the danger. Just as it spread its wings to fly away, the sickle struck it in the neck.
The sharp sickle sliced the pheasant’s head clean off.
In a final spasm, the pheasant’s body FLUTTERED on the ground a few tis before it collapsed.
It was the first ti Gu Jiaojiao had seen Leng Yuan hunt.
Her eyes widened in astonishnt. Then, she raised her hands and started clapping for him.
"Honey, you’re incredible! I’m so lucky to have found such a capable husband. You caught a pheasant with a single throw! That’s so aweso!"
’Hunting is this easy.’
’I can totally do this!’
Leng Yuan saw right through her and couldn’t help but ask in a soft voice,
"Want to give it a try?"
Gu Jiaojiao’s eyes lit up.
"Can I?"
Without a word, Leng Yuan carried Gu Jiaojiao deeper into the woods.
The farther in they went, the fewer people they encountered, and the animals were less wary.
The animals in these mountains were clever; they knew which areas were safe and which were dangerous.
Even the pheasants rarely ventured toward the outer edges of the forest.
That was why people so rarely caught them. The villagers didn’t dare to venture too deep, and the pheasants knew not to wander out. Anyone who did manage to catch one must have had incredible luck.
Sure enough, they hadn’t gone far before they spotted several pheasants darting through the trees.
Leng Yuan set Gu Jiaojiao down, handing her a slingshot and a few small stones.
In her past life, Gu Jiaojiao had been wealthy and had plenty of free ti, so she’d often gone to clubs to practice shooting. She was decent with both bows and air guns.

Gu Jiaojiao drew back the slingshot, closed one eye, aid, and fired.
THWACK.
The stone landed right next to the pheasant.
The pheasant, which had been pecking at the ground, lifted its head in confusion. Its beady eyes glanced at Gu Jiaojiao, then at the stone beside it. It let out a couple of soft CLUCKS before lowering its head and continuing to eat.
Gu Jiaojiao: ...
’She was pretty sure she’d just been mocked by a chicken.’
Her competitive spirit ignited, Gu Jiaojiao loaded another stone, drew back the slingshot, and fired again.
THWACK. The stone grazed the pheasant as it landed nearby.
Hearing the noise, the pheasant tilted its head to look at the stone. It stopped foraging and stared right at Gu Jiaojiao, making a low CLUCKING sound.
Not only that, but it also spread its wings, gave them a little flap, and then folded them again, all while staring at her.
’Fine.’
’That bird was blatantly taunting her!’
Gu Jiaojiao loaded another stone.
THWACK, THWACK, THWACK, THWACK...
She fired off a volley of seven or eight stones, but not a single one hit the pheasant.
At this point, even the pheasant seed to be laughing at her.
It had probably never seen such a clumsy hunter.
It let out a few squawks, then arrogantly turned around, shook its tail feathers, and looked back at Gu Jiaojiao.

The young woman’s fair, delicate face was puffed out in a pout. Her large eyes were filled with accusation and a hint of injustice, looking utterly wronged.
Leng Yuan’s Adam’s apple bobbed. He leaned in to press a soft kiss on her lips, his voice deep and steady. "I’ll take care of it for you."
A blush crept onto Gu Jiaojiao’s cheeks, but her attention was quickly captured by Leng Yuan’s movents.
She turned back to the pheasant with a triumphant smirk.
The pheasant let out a worried CLUCK, sensing that things had taken a bad turn. It spread its wings, flapped twice, and took to the air.
Pheasants fly fast. The window to catch one is before it takes off; once it’s in the air, even the most experienced hunter would be helpless.
