Xu Wenwan pushed the mold under her bed. Fearing it would be discovered, she placed so things in front to completely hide it from view.
By the ti she finished, it was ti for dinner. She looked at the corn mush in the pot with a disgusted expression.
Xu Wenwan knew how to cook, too.
In the past, Gu Jiaojiao had loved to cook, and she was very good at it. Xu Wenwan had tried her cooking once and had been absolutely amazed.
Afterward, she had also tried to learn how to cook.
However, she lacked the perseverance. After just a few days, she found it too troubleso and ended up dropping it.
Still, the food she could make was, at the very least, better than what most people cooked in this era.
She would have liked to cook for herself, but the family had very little oil, and her mother locked it in a cabinet every day. She couldn’t even get her hands on the oil, so even making fried stead bun slices was out of the question.
Xu Wenwan’s expression was grim as she stared at the bland, oil-less dishes before her.
She couldn’t help but ask, "Mom, didn’t we get a good amount of wild boar at? Why aren’t we eating it?"
Chen Xiumin didn’t even look up. "That’s being saved for the New Year."
"But we are having at today."
As she spoke, Chen Xiumin took so pieces of chicken from the cupboard and tossed them into the wok to stir-fry. In an instant, a savory aroma filled the air.
Xu Wenwan’s mouth nearly started to water at the sight.
"Mom, where did we get chicken?"
"Leng Yuan and Gu Jiaojiao sent this over for their wedding. That girl is just so considerate. Your sister-in-law went to help out, so she sent this chicken over specially to thank her."
She’d heard that only the families who had helped out received so.
It had to be said, the gesture left a very good impression on people.
Chen Xiumin’s words were filled with nothing but praise for Gu Jiaojiao.
"You should spend more ti with Gu Zhiqing in the future. She’s smart and educated. You could learn a thing or two from her!"
’If Xu Wenwan spent more ti with Gu Jiaojiao, perhaps Gu Jiaojiao could be a good influence on her.’
The more she thought about it, the more Chen Xiumin felt it was an excellent idea.
Xu Wenwan was speechless.
’She had already wondered countless tis if this "book" was just so pirated version of her own story. After all, the plot had beco this absurd.’
’In her novel, the original heroine and Yun Hao were truly in love. They were a couple the whole village rooted for. But Gu Jiaojiao was not only always buzzing around Yun Hao, but also tried every trick in the book to seduce him.’
’Any villager with eyes could see what she was doing, and everyone despised Gu Jiaojiao.’
’This was especially true for the Xu Family.’
’Because she and Yun Hao were childhood sweethearts and were planning on courting, Gu Jiaojiao’s constant attempts to seduce him had earned her the Xu Family’s revulsion. In the Xu household, no one ever had a single good word to say about Gu Jiaojiao.’
’And Chen Xiumin was chief among them, despising Gu Jiaojiao the most.’
’But now, here she was, praising Gu Jiaojiao and even calling her smart and educated.’
’Is this plot even salvageable?’
Xu Wenwan was furious, and her expression imdiately soured.
"Mom, you’re so fickle! It’s just a few pieces of chicken, it’s not like we’ve never eaten at before. Do you really think she’s so kind of saint? I’ve heard all about her. First, she was chasing after Yun Hao, and then she seduced Leng Yuan. If they hadn’t been caught doing sothing so shaless, why else would they have gotten married!"
Chen Xiumin was furious. "Whatever she did in the past, she’s a married woman now! If you’re so clever, why don’t you go get married!"
"You go to the Educated Youth building to see soone every day. Do you have any idea what people are saying about your own reputation?"
’She should take a good look at herself before criticizing soone else.’
’Everyone in the village was talking about how she was always with Yun Hao. Her reputation was even worse than Gu Jiaojiao’s, yet she still had the nerve to talk.’
The more Chen Xiumin thought about it, the angrier she beca.
Whenever she went out these days, the old gossips would talk to her about Yun Hao and Xu Wenwan, saying that if they were both willing, they should just get engaged already. It made her absolutely livid at the ti.
She had chalked it up to her daughter having just returned ho and perhaps not understanding village customs, plus the fact that she grew up with Yun Hao and was simply being naive.
But she had tried to give Xu Wenwan the benefit of the doubt, and in return, her daughter was taking a mile for every inch she gave.
Xu Wenwan burst into angry tears. Forgetting all about dinner, she ran straight into her room.
