Gu Jiaojiao felt that Sweet Girl was getting older, so it was a little inappropriate for her to keep sharing a room with her younger brother.
So Leng Yuan went out, chopped so wood, and ca back to partition Sweet Girl and Xiao Yang’s room. He divided it into two separate bedrooms with wooden doors, creating a two-bedroom, one-living-room layout.
The children could play together in the new living area.
Xiao Ni was young, and a quiet little girl besides, so she didn’t imdiately rush out to play.
She shyly tugged on the corner of Chen Xiaoli’s clothes, blinking as she stared at Gu Jiaojiao for a mont before saying in a sweet, soft voice, "Pretty Auntie."
After she spoke, the child shyly hid behind Chen Xiaoli.
Her words made all the adults laugh.
Yu Fangfang couldn’t help but tease.
"Oh my, our little Xiao Ni already knows her auntie is pretty! You’re such a sweet-talker."
Yu Fangfang looked at Xiao Ni with a hint of envy. She stroked her belly, hoping this baby would be a sweet, well-behaved little girl.
Everyone hopes to have both a son and a daughter.
Gu Jiaojiao noticed Yu Fangfang’s gesture. She rembered that in the novel, Yu Fangfang gives birth to a son.
Her cousin, Xu Wenwan, had an incredibly domineering personality. In the novel, she arranged for the two older brothers of the Xu Family to have sons. As for little Xiao Ni, she was fated to run into a thug next year and et a tragic end.
That way, Xu Wenwan would be the only girl in the Xu Family, ensuring everyone would have to dote on her.
Such a plot was, frankly, twisted.
Especially now that Gu Jiaojiao saw how sweet Xiao Ni was, it seed like a terrible waste for such a good child to be murdered.
Gu Jiaojiao led the group to the doorway and said to Chen Xiaoli and Yu Fangfang,
"Why don’t you two go inside first? I can see Xiao Ni is a little shy, so I’ll take her to et the other kids."
With that, she reached for Xiao Ni’s hand.
Hearing this, Chen Xiaoli was about to stop her. Her daughter was usually timid and wouldn’t even let strangers hold her.
But as soon as Gu Jiaojiao reached out, Xiao Ni placed her own little hand in hers and obediently followed her out.
Chen Xiaoli: ...
Yu Fangfang, who knew Xiao Ni’s disposition, laughed and said,
"They say kids are the best judges of character. She can probably tell that Jiaojiao genuinely likes her."
Chen Xiaoli nodded in agreent.
The two won walked into the room and were imdiately enveloped in a wave of warmth.
The room was heated so well you only needed to wear a sweater.
"This room is so nice and warm! Leng Yuan always seed so cold and aloof, I thought he wouldn’t know the first thing about managing a ho. Looks like we really misjudged him."
Yu Fangfang nodded. "Leng Yuan might be cold on the outside, but he’s capable and he spoils his wife."
Take this firewood, for instance. Most families wouldn’t be willing to burn it so freely.
Most people in the village only light a fire in the morning and evening. They wouldn’t dream of keeping it this warm during the day. After all, you have to haul all that firewood ho yourself.
Gathering firewood from the mountains and carrying it ho on your back is a huge chore.
But Leng Yuan was a hard worker.
He had prepared a whole winter’s worth of firewood long ago. A tall stack was piled up outside, more than enough for them to burn.
Gu Jiaojiao led Xiao Ni to the other room. Seeing the kids playing with toys at the living room table, she said with a smile,
"Sweet Girl, your little sister Xiao Ni is here to play with you. She’s still little, so keep an eye on her, okay?"
Hearing this, Sweet Girl got up and walked over to Xiao Ni. "Co play with us, Xiao Ni!" she said.
Sweet Girl was much more confident now, and she no longer spoke as timidly as she used to.
Xiao Ni nodded and went to Sweet Girl’s side.
Sweet Girl led Xiao Ni over to the others and shared her toys with her. Then, she walked up to Gu Jiaojiao. "Mama," she asked, "our friend is here. Can I offer her so chestnuts and peanuts?"
