Chen JianShe got a bad feeling as Xu Wenwan stared at him.
He suddenly regretted stopping to watch the commotion.
With that thought, he turned to leave.
But Xu Wenwan suddenly rushed forward. "Chen JianShe, stop right there."
Chen JianShe scratched his head and stood his ground. He looked at Xu Wenwan and asked in confusion, "Can I help you?"
"Will you marry ?"
"W-what did you say?"
Chen JianShe thought there was sothing wrong with his ears.
’He didn’t even know Xu Wenwan!’
’Sothing must be wrong. I must have misheard.’ Chen JianShe couldn’t help but ask again.
Seeing his dumbfounded expression, Xu Wenwan’s face broke into a delicate smile. She seductively tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and asked in a soft voice, "Do you want to marry ?"
Chen JianShe was scared stiff. He scrambled back seven or eight steps until he was sure there was a safe distance between them, then spoke awkwardly.
"Miss Xu, please don’t joke around."
He couldn’t manage a smile. His expression was one of pure horror.
He looked utterly terrified.
Xu Wenwan’s expression faltered. "What, am I not beautiful enough?"
Chen JianShe scratched his head, almost scratching it raw. It was the first ti he’d ever been in a situation like this, and he had absolutely no idea what to do.
After a mont’s thought, he explained, "My mom told to marry a girl with a good reputation. I’m sorry."
As soon as the words were out, he bolted away like a gust of wind.
If you looked closely, you could still see the dust he kicked up from the ground.
The crowd was enjoying the juicy drama. One of the aunties couldn’t help but make a wisecrack.
"Looks like JianShe is running for his life! That was pretty terrifying, to be honest."
She then shot Xu Wenwan a contemptuous look. "Saying sothing like that to a man in the middle of the street... a total lack of sha. I wouldn’t want a daughter-in-law like that even if she were free."
The person beside her tugged on her sleeve. "Keep your voice down."
The auntie rolled her eyes, then started gossiping about Xu Wenwan with her companion as they walked away.
One auntie spotted her son with a group of friends, staring at Xu Wenwan. She imdiately marched over and pinched his ear hard.
"What are you looking at? Get your butt ho now, or you’ll get a taste of a bamboo switch!"
The young man jumped in fright.
’He did have a bit of a crush on Xu Wenwan. Who could bla him? She was gorgeous!’
’But he was more afraid of his mom and her bamboo switch.’
’One wrong move, and he’d be spanked black and blue.’
In fact, all the young bachelors in the village had been warned by their mothers, usually while having their ears pulled.
After all, Xu Wenwan was beautiful and knew how to bewitch a man. They were genuinely afraid their foolish sons would fall for a woman like her and want to bring her ho as a wife. So, they nagged them relentlessly.
The long and short of it was this: if any of them dared to marry Xu Wenwan, their mothers would break their legs.
So, even though the woman was scolding her own son, the rest of the unmarried young n nearby also flinched.
And so, within seconds, the street was completely empty of young n.
Once the young n were gone, the remaining aunties turned their attention back to Xu Wenwan and her attire. Their comnts grew harsh.
"Coming out dressed like that to seduce n... Shaless, absolutely shaless."
"Is she that desperate? Just grabbing any man and asking him to marry her. Who would dare bring such a shaless woman ho as a wife? Who knows, one day she might just cheat on her husband!"
"Exactly! I’ve never seen anyone so shaless. Rember that girl, Chuchu? She was so nice. But this one, back from the city... she doesn’t even know the aning of the word ’sha’."
Hearing these nasty comnts, Xu Wenwan felt like she was about to explode with rage.
