"That guy, huh..."

At the ntion of Gu Xuan, Yang Qingxi recalled that villain—one whose ending had been nearly as miserable as her own.

Lover gone.

Family destroyed.

Wealth, reputation, life—stripped away one by one.

And in the end, even his sister had been taken from him, tortured until her mind shattered, forced to live a fate worse than death.

Snapping out of her thoughts, she asked, "What did he co for?"

"He begged Song Jinyu for a chance to see Ye Chen."

"As expected." Yang Qingxi’s tone was calm. "How did it go?"

"Gu Xuan lost control. If the officers hadn’t intervened, he would’ve rushed forward to kill Ye Chen."

"You an get beaten up by him?"

"...Sothing like that." Su Mo paused. "Either way, Gu Xuan was furious. Ye Chen taunted him just as much. Gu Xuan threatened to make his life worse than death before leaving. He also told Song Jinyu that Ye Chen is a rcenary—though the organization’s na is still unknown."

"Hm." Yang Qingxi thought for a mont. "He’ll probably make a move after Ye Chen is transferred to jail."

Su Mo nodded. "That’s the safest option. Minimal risk. Gu Xuan won’t stop until Ye Chen is dead and his girlfriend is avenged."

"..." Yang Qingxi fell silent, then sighed softly. "Why would heaven favor such a disgusting person? Do they really deserve to be called protagonists?"

Su Mo recalled Ye Chen’s long list of evil sins. After a mont, he said gently, "Maybe there’s also a reasonable protagonist sowhere out there. We just haven’t t one yet."

Yang Qingxi turned to look at him. As her gaze lingered on his handso face, her lips curved into a faint smile.

"You’re right. Maybe there is."

Nearby, Zhang Xulin listened in, trying to piece things together. Instead, she ended up even more confused.

’Why are they so fixated on Ye Chen? And why does Miss Yang sound... envious? Protagonist?’

Su Mo noticed her dazed expression. "Should we explain everything to her?"

Zhang Xulin snapped back to reality and looked at Yang Qingxi expectantly.

Yang Qingxi’s reply made her heart sink. "Let her figure it out herself."

"Miss, that’s unfair!" Zhang Xulin protested, aggrieved.

Yang Qingxi smiled teasingly. "Maybe. But isn’t it more interesting that way?"

Zhang Xulin puffed out her cheeks and turned away. ’Interesting? More like you enjoy watching suffer.’

Su Mo watched quietly from the side, choosing not to interfere.

He quietly opened his system and did today’s check-in.

[Ding!]

[Check-in successful!]

[Rewards: 1) 120 points,

2) Ankang Biotech’s 65% Share (Note: The docunts would be transferred within the next 24 hours)]

The point reward was, as usual. Though a little more than the last few days, which made him happy. The second reward was unexpected.

[What the heck? Does the system give company shares too?]

Yang Qingxi, walking beside him, heard his inner voice with a twinkle in her eyes, but no change in expression.

[Ankang Biotech? This na sounds familiar... Where have I heard it? Forget it, I’ll look into it later.]

’Su Mo got shares in a company nad Ankang Biotech? I should let Secretary Lin look at the prospects of this company.’ Yang Qingxi decided and sent a ssage on her phone.

---

Back at the police station.

After Gu Xuan left, Song Jinyu remained seated in silence, her eyes fixed on the docunts spread across her desk.

They all pointed to one shocking truth.

Ye Chen was indeed a rcenary—and a notorious one at that.

Terrorist operations in small countries.

Supporting warmongers.

Assassinations of diplomats.

And behind it all, there was a faint shadow of a mysterious organisation.

The problem was that most of the evidence was fragnted—insufficient for formal charges.

’If Ye Chen is a rcenary, it explains why he killed He Xiong without personal motive. Soone could’ve hired him.’

’But why surrender so easily? Why offer no resistance at all?’

’Is there another sche at play?’

A knock interrupted her thoughts.

"Co in."

A young officer entered.

"Officer Tang? I thought you were resting."

Tang Hu still looked exhausted. "Officer Lu called back for Zhu Ling’s interrogation."

"Thanks for your effort." Song Jinyu nodded. "Who is Zhu Ling?"

"He Xiong’s mistress."

A sharp gleam flashed in Song Jinyu’s eyes. "What did you find?"

"She knew nothing. At He Xiong’s request—and a promise of a new car—she agreed to sleep with Wang Cai."

"That’s all?" Song Jinyu wasn’t surprised, though she’d hoped for more. "Did she notice anything unusual?"

Tang Hu struggled to keep a straight face. "According to her, it ended before she even realized what happened."

"From entering the hotel room to leaving—it took about three minutes."

"..."

Song Jinyu’s brows twitched. She waved him off. "Inform Officer Lu and tell him to speed things up."

"Yes, Captain!"

---

Sunshine Charitable Trust.

Officer Lu Han stood among the caregivers, a ledger in his hand, his expression grim.

"You’re saying none of the children listed here were ever brought in?"

The ledger had been recovered from He Xiong’s office. At first, Lu Han assud it recorded admissions and adoptions. Now it was clear that he had been wrong.

"Absolutely not," an elderly caregiver replied without hesitation. "I’ve worked here for ten years. Those children were never here."

Lu Han questioned the other caregivers and older children alike. None recognized a single na.

’This just got complicated.’

Frowning, he ordered the ledger sent to the intelligence departnt and reported the situation to Song Jinyu.

After the officers left, the caregivers gradually returned to their duties.

All except one.

That caregiver lingered, his gaze following the departing officers until they disappeared from sight. Only then did he slip into a secluded corner and pull out his phone.

The caller ID read: Boss Wang.

He pressed the dial.

*Ring.*

No answer.

He tried again.

*Ring. Ring.*

Still nothing.

A thin layer of sweat ford on his brow. Boss Wang never ignored his calls—never.

An uneasy chill crept up his spine.

What the caregiver didn’t know was that, sowhere far away, a phone lay ringing on a table.

And the man it belonged to... would never pick it up again.
