Riley slowly scooted back onto Kael’s lap as if nothing had happened.

He cleared his throat once. Then twice. Then a third ti, pretending that he absolutely did not just maul the dragon lord’s face with butterfly kisses.

Kael’s gaze followed him in silence, golden eyes narrowed slightly.

The human adjusted his collar, brushed invisible dust off his sleeves, and tried his best to act composed.

Then his hand moved—hovering indecisively over his own hair, as if thinking of sothing monuntal.

Kael frowned. "What are you doing?"

"Thinking," Riley said flatly.

"About?"

"You’ll see."

Kael sighed, already losing patience. "You, if this is another episode of your insanity—"

"Can you please hand your phone?" Riley interrupted.

The golden lizard blinked. "What?"

"Your phone," Riley repeated, holding out his hand expectantly.

Golden eyes darted between the extended hand and Riley’s face, full of suspicion. The mortal only wiggled his fingers wordlessly.

After a long pause, the dragon reluctantly reached into his pocket and handed it over.

The dubious human aide accepted it with a satisfied little hum.

The dragon lord tilted his head. "And what exactly are you planning to do with—"

"Wait," Riley said, already tapping at the screen.

The phone opened instantly. No code. No lock. No anything.

Riley blinked. "Oh. It just... opened?"

He looked back up. "No password?"

Kael scoffed.

"Right." Riley sighed. "Of course."

Even without an explanation, he should’ve known that this technologically averse dragon likely wouldn’t have added anything that would piss him off further. Who knew how many phones would be broken if they refused him access?

He shook his head and leaned closer as he adjusted the screen. Kael’s eyes followed the movent, confused by how close the mortal’s face suddenly was.

The human’s arm extended outward, holding the device steady.

And before Kael could ask what on Eryndra he was doing, Riley tilted in—again—and kissed him on the cheek.

Click!

Kael froze.

"?!"

Riley montarily let the confused dragon be, as he continued fiddling with the screen. He tapped, swiped, adjusted sothing, then reached into his pocket to pull out his own phone.

anwhile, the golden lizard just sat there, visibly trying to process what had just happened.

By the ti he regained his composure, Riley was grinning, both phones in hand.

"There," the mortal said, turning one of the screens toward him. "See? There’s no official registration because this stage is right before people decide if they want to be with each other forever. But there are still things that boyfriends do."

Kael raised a brow. "Such as?"

Riley smiled wider, tapping the screen. "In fact, there may even be things that only those in this stage do now."

Kael frowned suspiciously. "And are you saying this is what boyfriends do? What even is that supposed to be?"

"See," Riley began, holding up the device with a resigned grin, "if you open your phone, this is what you see now. And you probably don’t know, but that’s how others check if soone has a partner. That, and maybe every now and then, they’d post about them on social dia. But because you don’t have that, there’s this for now."

He pointed at the screen of Kael’s phone.

There, glowing brightly, was the new wallpaper—a photo of one marginally startled Dragon Lord being kissed on the cheek by a grinning twig.

Kael stared at it.

Then kept staring.

Then he stared so more at that thing, which was starting to look a little too good in his eyes.

His eyes narrowed. "What are those boxes blocking the faces?"

Riley blinked. "Oh, those? Those are the usual applications. The photo is set as a wallpaper, so it sits behind the apps."

Kael’s lips parted slightly, clearly unsure how to process that information when he just didn’t want those boxes blocking the way.

But before he could say anything, the human continued to explain, "Of course, these are the trivial things people do so that they’re reminded of their partners, and sotis so that others know they’re taken. Dragons, after all, aren’t the only ones that have a possessive streak."

Riley waved his own phone around as he spoke, causing the screen to light up.

The golden dragon’s gaze imdiately flicked toward it. His pupils slitted.

"It’s different," he said flatly.

"Huh?" Riley blinked. "What’s different?"

"You said boyfriends do it like this. Why is yours different?"

The dragon lord’s voice was so serious that it sounded like he was negotiating a peace treaty instead of discussing phone wallpapers.

Riley coughed, caught off guard. "Oh. I kept the photo, but I didn’t think you’d want using it. Because, you know, I actually use my phone outside."

Kael’s eyes widened slightly, disbelief flashing across his face. "Were you planning on hiding like a dirty secret?"

"What?! No!" Riley protested imdiately. "Also, how could that even work when everyone already assus we’re mates?"

Kael didn’t blink. "Then change it."

That was an order, not a suggestion.

And Riley, recognizing the tone, wisely obeyed. He tapped on the screen, adjusted the photo, and set it as his wallpaper.

When he turned the screen toward Kael, the golden dragon regarded it for a mont, then gave an approving nod.

Riley wasn’t sure if he should feel proud or concerned.

Who would’ve thought soone like this would actually be interested in sothing like matching wallpapers when the guy never even liked the concept of using phones?

Most importantly, who would’ve thought he’d ever end up in a relationship with an actual dragon?

Then again, one newly minted boyfriend should have realized that introducing this kind of thing to a possessive dragon might not have been the most brilliant move.

Wouldn’t it have been wiser to choose sothing less conspicuous to show soone like this guy?

But such worries were for another day, as maybe he should’ve just agreed to see the guardians right that mont, in the middle of the night, even in his pajamas.

Because as Riley leaned back, thinking it was all over, Kael’s voice ca again—calm, but too calm.

"Then if the rest could wait for tomorrow," Kael said slowly, "what about that pressing issue with your degeneracy?"

"!!!"

Green eyes flung open.

He really should’ve gone to see the Guardians!
